Rating: Summary: The thrilling saga continues Review: If you read any of Harry Turtledove's alternate history books before you can predict the structure of "Walk in Hell" with a relative certainty - multiple story lines, intertwining characters, human tragedies and triumphs, both big and small, on a continent ravaged by war. What impresses me the most is the way the author allows you to view the atrocities of war without cringing. While the actual battle scenes are an essential part of the narrative - and are done extremely well, by the way - Mr. Turtledove does not get mired in gory details by making a reader view the fighting through the eyes of his characters. Thus, the war acquires a much deeper psychological undertone rather than stand apart from the characters as a separate entity. As always, I highly recommend this book and the rest of the works in the Worldwar and Great War series.
Rating: Summary: Great concept; ok writing Review: I am fascinated by Turtledove's analysis of how WWI would have progressed with this lineup of combatants. It apprears that he has an excellent grasp of the way WWI *actually* was, in the trenches, on the seas, and among those planning (and bungling) strategy. The actual characters are interesting and compelling, but their motivations and words sometimes do not ring true. Oh well; a small price to pay for a very interesting and compelling series of books. My prediction: the USA technically wins, but it's more of a "draw", with the CSA and Canada losing some territory, but remaining as adversaries of the USA. Will we see a WWII trilogy in the future?
Rating: Summary: CSA had better win! Review: A friend of mine introduced me to Mr. Turtledove with Guns of the South! Since that time I have had the priviledge of reading The Great War series and How Few Remain. As an ardent Southern Nationalist, I see many comparisons between the USA of today and the alternate USA Mr. Turtledove writes about. I hope that CSA Sub Commander Roger Kimball gets to see Ms. Colleton again. I love the way Commander Kimball is able to go into New York Harbor and blow the Yankees right out of the water (pardon the pun)! The treatment of the black people is wrong on both sides. I believe the CSA has the right idea by giving them equal rights if they fight for us. Mr. Turtledove has written another winner! I hope that the Confederate States of America prevails and that truth and justice will win out over the Tyranny of Germany and the USA!
Rating: Summary: Walk in Hell Review Review: This was not quite a believeable book, but it provided excellent enjyable reading. Trench warfare on American soil is vividly drawn in excellent detail and the charactars are rich and provide interesting point of views. There are some perplexing problems on the war going on outside America. One is whether England would have starved todeath with an American navy on the high seas and and unrestricted German UBOat campaign from the first day of the war. This constant pressur on the RoyalNavy probably would have allowed the Geraman Navy to break out of the North Sea. Also, with England having to fight in Canada too, the Geramns might have been the ones on the offensive in France. The abscense of the Canadian Corps in France also would have been significant. Nevertheless, this book provides good enjoyment and lots of deep thought.
Rating: Summary: WONDERFULL! Review: I read this book and was amazed YET AGAIN! WOW! He tells his stories so well, and with him taking no sides you can't tell whose going to win. i only know one thing. THE USA HAD BETTER WIN!
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: Turtledove's The Great war: Walk in Hell has few virtues. It has poor character development and literally none that are sympathetic. Its treatment of blacks is particularly offensive. In Turtledove's world blacks are as despised in the north as they are in the south. Yet after being crushed in a Marxist rebellion, blacks are welcomed into the southern army where they flock to fight for the country that held them as chatel and continues to ruthlessly suppress them. The book does a disservice to the 100,000 blacks who fought for the north. Basically the book is an excuse to demean blacks and to use the n-word.
Rating: Summary: Weak ending, great book Review: I can't say that the plot isn't progressing, but it seems the only reason for stopping where it did was that the book would be too thick and Dr. Turtledove had a deadline. American Front had the same problem, although we did have the dramatic Red Rebellion right at the end. Here we have more of a general shifting of fortunes. Nonetheless, if the next two books are as good as the first two, then the tetralogy will stand very well as a single story. The thing I find most compelling about this series is the sympathy I have for the sympathetic characters on both sides while having so little sympathy for either side in the war as a whole. On the one side we have the CSA who still treat their blacks as chattel (although less and less as necessity dictates) and allied with our old WWI allies. On the other hand, we have the USA allied with the Axis powers and showing early signs of fascism, not to mention a growing Socialist movement in the absence of a powerful Republican party. How can this turn out well? Who do I want to win? The answer is that it can't turn out well and the best thing would be for it to never have happened in the first place. Oh yeah, it didn't.
Rating: Summary: The Great War: Walk in Hell Review: Overall a disappointing but still entertaining novel. Turtledove's strengths are character development and social commentary. He creates a broad impression of the impact of his fictional history on a divided America. Where Turtledove disappoints is capturing the true nature of military operations and the impact of emerging technology. His analysis of military topics is superficial. In short, the book is entertaining, but don't look too hard at the military interpretation of Turtledove's alternate history.
Rating: Summary: Great continuation of the series Review: A great story, if you liked recent war novels like The Triumph & the Glory or Gods and Generals you'll like Turtledove. His most recent books, How Few Remain and The Great War: Walk in Hell are GREAT!
Rating: Summary: CSA all the way!!! Review: I loved the book! Go Turtledove! The South will win again! Any fans of alternate history, real history, or any of Turtledove's works won't be disappointed! Go for it!
