Rating: Summary: Salvatore's best yet Review: Mortalis continues the sweeping epic Salvatore started in the Demon Wars Trilogy, and sets the stage for further adventures in his world of Corona. There is enough action and intrigue to satisfy most adventure fans, but this is a deeper book. This is a book that examines the responsibility of organized religion to the people it serves; a book that questions who is saint and who is heretic; a book that takes a hopeful look at miracles, and a cynical look at the traditions that religious leaders hide behind, a book that decries the apparant futility of fighting an evil that will eventually just reappear in one form or another. It is a journey that many of us have made ourselves; and - while you will find few clear-cut answers here - Mortalis will give you renewed hope in our world as it takes you deep within the world Salvatore has created so vividly.
Rating: Summary: Thank you Mr. Salvatore Review: Mortalis is a wonderful read and helps put closure to the first three books of the demon war saga. After reading this book, I too, like Jilseponie have come to terms with Nightbird's death and look forward to a hopeful future. The intense emotion inspired by this book and the ending of the last are truly a work of art.The Demon Wars Saga is a must read for fantasy novel fans. The book provides a good "interim" ending until you are ready to delve into the Second Demon War.
Rating: Summary: Mortalis....Masterpiece Review: Mortalis is an amazing book. Enthralling, enchanting, spell-binding... Awesome. Those descriptions all certainly apply to this masterpiece, but none of them are sufficient. This is a book that must be read, must be experienced, in order to truly be appreciated. I am a longtime fan of R. A. Salvatore. I was there at the beginning of his career and practically inhaled The Crystal Shard as a kid. And Salvatore has done nothing but get better as time goes by---he is one of only a precious few writers who actually improves from book to book. Mortalis is a grand achievement, as is the Second DemonWars Trilogy that follows it and the original DemonWars trilogy that precedes it, truly one of the all-time greatest epics in the fantasy genre. Perhaps the greatest strength of Salvatore's writing in general, and especially in the DemonWars series, is his ability to create characters that come to life for the reader, characters readers can actually care about as if they were real, alive and breathing, and standing right beside you. Salvatore's characters are not stereotypes. His heroes are not perfect---they are only humans, after all, struggling to do the best they can---and his villains are complicated, often shaded in gray rather than utter darkness. Salvatore gives his characters compelling reasons for their actions and deeply explores the motivations of all his characters. This exploration makes for a much richer and more rewarding reading experience than one generally finds in most typical fantasy novels or novels of any other genre, for that matter. Over the years, Salvatore has been often and justly praised for his fast moving battle sequences and all the rousing adventure he injects into his tales and I couldn't agree with that praise more...but it is truly his amazing characters that are the primary draw for me. I truly don't know what else to say. I was totally absorbed with Mortalis and disliked only one thing about about this amazing book---the fact that it ended. Thank God there were three more following it in the series and, hopefully, many more novels set in the world of Corona in the years to come. As long as R. A. Salvatore keeps writing these amazing tales of supsense, action, adventure, and intrigue and continues to populate these spectacular stories with fascinating, compelling, and complicated characters, I'll keep buying them the minute they hit the shelves. Take my advice, people...You should buy them, too.

Rating: Summary: A moving tale of faith... Review: Mortalis truly moved me. There was a time when I found my disenchanted from religion. I found myself so cynical at the hypocrisy and arrogance of some of the self-described righteous that I know. I wanted nothing to do with religion. But it is books like Mortalis, as well as the other DemonWars, which truly have helped me see that religion can be a wonderful thing. This books shows that there is so much more to faith that simply declaring yourself right... You cannot simply say you are righteous. It shows that the truly righteous are not those with the power, but those who will sacrifice all they have to help another. The selfless are the righteous. If you have ever found yourself questioning your faith, read this book. It is a story that profoundly moved me, and it is much much more that simply "Hack and slash". Everyone should read this book, by far one of the best yet in Mr. Salvatore's esteemed career.
Rating: Summary: Just finished...... Review: Once again, R.A. Salvatore lives up to his usual standards and produces a very good book. Although not one of his best, Mortalis is a very good book and is interesting in the fact that the main antagonist in this story is not any one person or group that can be fought with swords or any 'normal' weapons. Definate should read, must read for fans of the DemonWars Saga.
Rating: Summary: I remain PRAGMATIC that Salvatore will do better next time Review: Over all, not Salvatore's best offering. But what I really wanted to bring up is the fact that Salvatore, in his recent books, seems completely obsessed with the word PRAGMATIC. Is anyone editing his books anymore? What editor would allow Salvatore to use the word PRAGMATIC literally around every ten or twenty pages. I mean, come on, it's getting old. Reach for a thesaurus already. Has anyone else noticed this? I honestly hope that Salvatore reads this, because it's an honest criticism from a HUGE fan of his. I'm hoping that the next Demon Wars entry is better than this one. This one seemed rushed and unpolished, as if perhaps it was just a working draft. The plot structure was in place, and moved well, but the prose was choppy and poorly executed, as if Salvatore never had time to go back to reconsider some of his word choices (pragmatic is a good example of this, another is that at least one character per page "snorts" or is "put back on their heels"). I feel like a traitor writing this, because I love Salvatore, but I just feel like maybe he's got too many projects on his plate, and it's effecting his writing. Oh well, I hope that Bastion and the next Drizzt novels are better.
Rating: Summary: Salvatore is a modern fantasy master...... Review: R. A. Salvatore proves what a multi-talented author he is with Mortalis. Salvatore is already famous for being able to choreograph dazzling fight scenes. In this book, he brings another talent to the forefront...............the ability to invoke some of the deepest layers of human emotion; whether it is despair, longing, corruption, greed, fear. There are a wide variety of characters in this novel; all of who really bring you into the story and make you feel what they are feeling. This book is definitely his best work. When I was almost halfway through the book I stayed up all night to finish it. I kept telling myself I would put it down after each chapter, but after each one, I had to keep reading more. The first three books were very good fantasy reads, but Mortalis really surpasses them and pulls all of the events that happen in the previous three together. I would have to say that I probably like the first three even better, after having read Mortalis. Whether you are a die-hard Drizzt fan, or a new reader to Salvatore, this book and this series will not disappoint you.
