Rating: Summary: Absolutely enthralling! Review: I had not heard of Mr. Coe before I picked up this novel while browsing. At first I wasn't quite sure I would like it, but 40 pages into the book I was hooked. The story moves, and I really enjoyed the way the characters were written. While it is not the deepest thing I have ever read, it is also not fantasy light. A good intriguing read with a nice mix of action.

Rating: Summary: Fantastic novel that kept me going Review: I have been looking for the next great series of high fantasy ever since I finished George R.R. Martins last book and have been going through a dry spell until I happened on Mr. Coe's book. The worst thing about this book is the cover. Some of the ideas and the characters are very similar to other writers, but his development of the families and such is very unique and his manner of writing and dialogue are wonderful. I will say that his first installment in very similar to Mr. Martin's Song of fire and ice, although it is with less violence and sexual conotation. I will anxiously await the Seeds of Betrayal and hope that I can now find another novel to tide me over until Jordan, Martin, or Willimas come out with another novel.
Rating: Summary: The Best Review: I haven't heard anything about this book at all. I just, with luck pick it up at the book store beacause it looked good. The old saying can't judge a book by it's cover. Well that saying is wrong. This book was the best book I've read this year and the story line was great. I had fun reading this book. The 604 pages is nothing, in a few days, you are done and wanting more. GET THIS BOOK AND START READING! I can't wait for the next book Seeds of Betrayal.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely enthralling! Review: I made the mistake of picking this book up during my last semester of my master's program. I couldn't put it down, and when I was at school or work I'd be so busy thinking what the characters were up too! These are some of the best fantasy characters I've yet to encounter! They're real and have dimension, and you get so involved with their lives. Coe has created a fantasy world all of his own, with gorgeous landscape and turbulent borders. The Rules of Ascension are very well crafted, and you can tell he didn't make the doctrine up as he went along. I have yet to see what the first 20 or so pages have to do with the "big picture", but there are 3 books left, and the story's interesting...sooo... Okay, I like this guy also because he has a picture of his dog on his website. He seems really down to earth and his stories are amazing!!! READ COE!
Rating: Summary: Cant help but it is soooo obvious Review: I Read all the reviews and thouth this was going to be a treat. Man was I wrong. It was not one twist och plot development that didnt shine throut at least a chapter ahead. I love when writes expand their character and Coe does that mentally but when it comes to physical apperance it goes sour. All I know of Tavis is that he has blond strait hair and that Grinsa is tall and Broad chested for a Qirsi. And people are grinning ALOT in this book. Something else that boardered me was that "SPOILER WARNING" that the only thing that keept Tavis From confession during the torture was pride. I belived that pride was the first thing to go under these circumstances. My advice read anouther book because this I do not like.
Rating: Summary: Getting better Review: I read David B Coe's first series, the Lon Tobyn Chronicle, last year and realized that if this author could iron out a few flaws in his writing, we should expect great things from him in the future. After reading "The Rules of Ascension", I'm still waiting. It's not a bad work; in fact, it's miles above much of the junk that's been flooding the fantasy genre in recent years. But it still falls far short of greatness. To be sure, this book shows some improvements over the Lon Tobyn Chronicle. There's a much more complex plot this time around, with some intrigues that you don't expect, and a bigger, richer cast of characters attempting to throw their weight around. The story is set in a land called Eibithar. A conspiracy amongst a race of wizards known as the Qirsi seeks to destabilize the current government as part of their revenge for the defeat of their ancestors centuries ago. As part of their plot, they use murder and misinformation to set the various royal houses of Eibithar against each other, hoping to cause an outbreak of violence. The plot moves along at a decent pace, and there is an outstanding battle sequence at the conclusion. The devil, as they say, is in the details. The problem is the writing and the characters. While the characters are reasonably complex and original, there's nobody here that you can really get attached to. Part of the problem lies in the dialogue, which is often stiff and mechanical. Coe often has his characters simply explain their thoughts and plans in a formulaic way, without adding very many of the tics and nuances that mark a real-life human conversation. Also, he distracting lists exactly why each character says every line of dialogue that they say, leading to very choppy conversations. More talented authors such as George R. R. Martin understand that this is not necessary. There are no lines or passages that stand out and stick in your memory for their greatness. I will probably read the second installment in this series eventually, even though I'm not terribly enthusiastic about it. I think that this author shows promise. The root of the problem may be Tor Fantasy, a company which seems to demand that most of its authors produce a completed book each year. If Coe had more time to edit and rewrite, he might be able to deliver a better overall experience. In the battle between authors and corporate executives, readers usually end up losing.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: I waited on this book for months and what can I say but that it was well worth it. This one of the best fantasy novels that I have ever read. This book has everything. There are rival kingdoms, political intrigue, and even a murder mystery. Most of all this book was unpredictable. You would think one thing would happen then something else would. If you are a fan of David B. Coe's other works (The Lon Tobyn Chronicle...which I highly recommend too) then you will love this book. Anyone who enjoys a great fantasy novel will love this book. I recommend this book to anyone! Hope you enjoy. 5 Stars all the way!
Rating: Summary: Fabulous new series!! Review: Just finished this one and going out tomorrow to get the Next one "Seeds of betrayal." This is really a rich and complex story that leaves you biting your nails wondering who is the betrayer and will Tavis ever be "set free" from the blame of killing his love Brienne?? Cannot wait to get the next one. Too bad i have to work!!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Epic! Review: Of all the books I have read never have I followed a book with such enthusiasm. Coe has written a wonderful Fantasy that I sincerely hope gains more light in the years to follow. While still maintain the epic proportions he's managed to condense the story to a realistic and reachable proportions to the reader. He thankfully isn't as long winded as Jordan, or nearly as cynical and sexual as Martin. Which is quite a relief and a break from the other fantasies out there. This is one of the best books I've ever read and once he finishes the series it will be come one of the rare ones I can pick up and read again. I recommend it to anyone!
