Review: "A Season on the Brink"

A Season on the Brink, was a great book. This book was about a coaching legend. Bob Knight, is described by many sport fans as one of the best coaches of all time. This is not just a plain old book. This book is about a coach walking between extreme madness and a complete genius.
In August of 1984, Bob Knight of Indiana University, lead the U.S Olympic basketball team to the gold medal. At that time, this was a master achievement to add to his two NCAA tournament championships. Many coaches to this day have not accomplished anything like this.
In February of 1985, Bob Knight's sees glimpses of his career coming to an end. His team is struggling dramatically. The Hoosier supporters are curious to what is happening to their Indiana program. Now Knight is known to go a little haywire, so anything is possible. In February of 1985, Bobby Knight throws a chair across the floor as a Purdue player is preparing to take foul shots. A little haywire is absurd! This is something that one would watch in a hockey game, not a NCAA Basketball game. Knight was suspended for only one game after reacting like he did. After ending that season, Knight was to where sky was the limit, to rock bottom! Knight also knew if another season like this was to occur, that his career was on the edge. Entering the 1985-86 season, would be a season on the brink.
Bobby Knight had been preaching his team that they needed to get into position to be in position. The Hoosiers were 2-2 in the Big Ten. Their next game was at home, against the Ohio State Buckeyes. This was a deciding game for the Indiana Hoosiers. This would give them a chance to be in the run for the Big Ten race. Daryl Thomas had a severe sprained ankle, while Ohio State had a seven-foot center to guard. Amongst all of this, Bobby Knight ended up getting a technical foul. In the end, the Hoosiers somehow pulled the victory off. From there on out the tide had changed. I chose to write about this game, because Knight had told his team what needed to be done, and they conquered it with all the given obstacles.
The Indiana Hoosiers were back to being Hoosiers again!

Summary: The subject makes this book what it is...
Review: ...an outstanding description of a year in the life of the maddeningly complex Robert Montgomery Knight. Using every motivational tool available to him (from psychological ploys, to unconditional compliments to incredibly painful and stressful drills), Knight drives the '86 Indiana Hoosiers relentlessly through a brutal Big Ten season.

With little in the way of athletic talent or height, Knight uses every approach he can devise to extract a moderately successful season from an underwhelming group of players. Knight coaxes, belittles, praises and drives the team forward with a style that is as unique as it is politically incorrect.

As an aside, I just read Jerry Kramer's _Instant Replay_ (his diary of the '67 Packers) and the parallels between Vince Lombardi and Knight are uncanny. In today's environment, it is unlikely that Lombardi would be allowed to coach in the same style he employed then.

Feinstein does a workmanlike job here, letting the subject and the cast of characters do the lion's share of the writing. Feinstein should thank Knight profusely for putting him on the map. For, as he has demonstrated in subsequent books, Knight made this book what it is: a precious historical perspective of a brilliant Coach in a bygone era.

Summary: I loathed Bobby Kbight before I read this book, and now...
Review: ...I admire him greatly. What a marvelous read. This is one of the top sports books I've ever read, and it was Feinstein's best book...(Sorry John, but each book gets worse...you are the Orson Wells of your genre) The book deals with such drama and human emotion that parts left me drained. Ever since I read this I have always rooted for coach Knight. He does so much good in the world, and yet we never read about it...curious. Even if you are not a sports fan, this is a wonderful read. Enjoy

Summary: Big time basketballs side show
Review: A Season on the Brink is a very outspoken and true story of the infamous coach and his legendary Hoosiers during the 1985-86 seasons. After a very disappointing season the year before Knight and his Hoosiers prepare for the season ahead. Season, is an invigorating story of Knights personality and his explosive demeanor. John Feinstein was granted the entire year by Bobby Knight to follow the team on every game, practice, and meeting the team had that year. A Season on the Brink goes in the world that Knight has with his players and his way of motivating his team to reach his goals. Feinstein doesn't pull any punches but he is very unbiased also letting the reader see Knights softer side. Season details player opinions and the opinions of others associated with Indiana basketball. This is a very explosive and fun book that delves deep into the psyche of Knight and his own weird way of doing things. An exciting adventure for any Hoosier or college basketball fan that loves the drama of the game and the fire that Bob Knight brings to the table.

Review: A Season On The Brink

The author, John Feinstein, did a fine job writing this book and Bobby Knight was generous enough to allow John
Feinstein to write it about him and also allowing him to talk to
the players and assistant coaches. I did notice there were
reasons why I liked this book and reasons why I didn't like this
book. I believe any Indiana Hoosiers fan would enjoy reading
this. This book was interesting and it did keep my attention
long enough to finish reading it.
A reason I did not like this book is because I am not reallyan Indiana Hoosiers fan. Being a fan of Indiana University
basketball back when this book was written often meant you
had to like Bobby Knight, his coaching style, or the players
themselves. I did not like his style of coaching and I felt like
the players didn't get the respect they should have received
from him. Bobby Knight liked to express his untamed anger at
the players, referees, media and assistant coaches.
By liking this book, I got to see what kind of trouble Bobby Knight got himself into. I thought he was a horrible example to other coaches and players. If he didn't get his way, there would be a price to pay and that often resulted in a technical foul on him. It was interesting reading this and imagining his explosive temper when he threw a chair or yelled at a player and got upset with a call and exploded into the referee's face. Bobby Knight was different than other coaches and always will be.
John Feinstein does make a great example of how Bobby
Knight acted towards the players. John was there every second,
writing away. If John wasn't there, a player or an assistant coach was allowed to report any unusual incidents that wouldn't be expected of a basketball coach during practices or games. Overall, this book revealed different sides of Bobby Knight during one season on the brink.

Summary: Like being an assistant coach for Knight
Review: A very interesting read which lets you get in the head of Bobby Knight and see what it's like to be a part of his team for one season. The answer: it's hell. You see Knight as both a brilliant coach and student of the game, an incredibly dedicated friend, and an out-of-control maniac.
