Rating: Summary: charming, readable, great information Review: "Ruffing It" is an exceptional book for anyone who camps with dogs, whether car camping with all the comforts of hook-ups and showers, or backpacking in national forests and BLM lands. Experienced campers themselves, Richmond and Barash display an in-depth understanding of canine-camping challenges and rewards, a real concern for environmental safeguards when camping with Charlie, and a delightful compassion for dogs -- handling methods discussed are based on positve reinforcement and reward rather than correction and punishment. Cchock full of information, fun to read, and liberally sprinkled with charming, humorous illustrations and captivating photographs of real people having real fun with their dogs on real camping trips.

Rating: Summary: Amateur Hour Review: I guess I figured that if someone was thinking of taking their dog camping, they themselves probably know a thing or two about camping already. I mean, do people really just take up camping once they get a dog? Because that's how a lot of this information reads. Beginner stuff: the difference between car camping and backpacking. Things to carry in a first-aid kit (human and dog). Oh, and you'll need to carry in or purify all your water. If all this stuff is news to you, then you'll find this book a boon. I liked the lists in the back (supply companies for things like a pet first-aid kit, that kind of thing). The drawings are strictly sixth-grade, the photographs amateur. The whole thing reminds me of a high school project.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining, well-written, and comprehensive. Review: I really enjoyed reading this manuscript. I've owned and traveled with dogs for years, yet I picked up lots of valuable tips. You'll be surprised what you need to know about camping and traveling with your pets.
Rating: Summary: Both owner and canine friendly Review: Ruffing It: The Complete Guide To Camping With Dogs is a straightforward guide for pet owners who are outdoor enthusiasts. From how to protect your dog from common hazards (including the importance of training one's pet not to drink from rivers or streams - they can get as sick as you can from from waterborne diseases! Instead, bring plenty of filtered water for the dog to drink too) to basic first aid, needed supplies, training for life out in the rough, and more. Black-and-white photographs and simple illustrations add a visual touch to this indispensible guide packed with advice on where to go, fun activities to do, getting along with wilderness creatures, and much more. A "must-have" for anyone looking forward to the joy of camping with a beloved pet, Ruffing It is both owner and canine friendly.
Rating: Summary: Amateur Hour Review: The book had lots of really good information with various tips to make it easier to take your dog camping. I have gone car-camping for years, but only just got my dog. The book brought up things that I would never have thought of. It was well written, and a good read. It also has an extensive section in the back of other helpful information, companies that sell dog-related equipment, and addresses to various camping areas.
