Rating: Summary: Great book! Review: I don't understand the review that criticizes this book as slow-paced! There are more hunting stories crammed into this 200 page book than in many books twice its length. As for ethics, I applaud Mr. Spring for portraying hunting as it really is. Sometimes the game gets away. Sometimes things go wrong. These stories are deep and heartfelt, and draw you along with the author and his friends on every hunt. As for being "Me & Joe" type stories, they sure are, and there isn't a thing wrong with that. If you like believeable hunting stories about real people, you'll like Season of Obsession. I'd recommend it to anyone and everyone who loves to hunt.
Rating: Summary: Season of Obsession Review: If you are after "me & Joe" hunting stories this book is for you. Mr Spring shares his diary of a hunting season, the book is slow paced and fails to capture the essence and beauty of hunting. At times it is even preachy and self rightous. Like when the author claims another hunter shot a goose after legal shooting hours, this is wrong and should be reported. However, Mr Spring and his buddy verbally accuse the lawbreaker and then speed away with no further action taken. This is after the author tells a story of himself shooting and not finding geese. Another example: Mr Spring and his wife go hunting using an old gun that apparently they did not sight in prior to the hunt. Then proceed to miss the game because they did not know where the gun was shooting. One of the most basic things a quality hunter does is prepare and practice with his or her chosen hunting equipment no matter what game is to be hunted.
Rating: Summary: Season of Obsession Review: In "Season of Obsession", author Joel Spring introduces the reader to the pure passions, pitfalls, and pleasures of hunting. Not being a hunter myself, I learned immeasurably about this sport from reading the writer's passages which take place over the full course of a hunting season. More than just the technical aspect of hunting, one discovers the true enjoyment of intermingling with nature through the author's eyes and also a healthy respect and appreciation in the ethics of good sportsmanship. The camaraderie between the friends and relatives who participated in the various hunts was also evident. It made me "feel" as if I trailed right along behind them, sharing their joys and triumphs, disappointments and trials. In addition, it was heartwarming to read how much the dogs enjoyed their romps through the tall grasses, swimming in lakes, enduring whatever weather it took to please their master and pursue their prey with their faithful devotion. "Obsession" is the theme of this book, and you can find it indelibly imprinted on every page with Joel Spring's fervent passion to the sport. Well written and highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Hit the nail on the head.... Review: This book was not slow paced! I couldn't put it down because it reminded me of the way hunting really is and the way it should be. Everyone has wounded game that they could not find, it comes with the territory. I believe that Joel tells it like the average blue collar hunter sees it. Not every day is spent with game in the pouch, yet some days are unforgetable. Sometimes just watching the dogs work is worth getting up at 4 am. For an avid outdoorsman, it was hard to put the book down.

Rating: Summary: Pheasants, Deer and Ducks, oh my! Review: This is the book I've been looking for for a long time. Ever since Gene Hill died, there haven't been many books that manage to capture the humorous side of hunting along with the serious, the wild adventures along with the boring waits on stand...Mr. Spring has written a book that every hunter should read. And if you know a young person that is getting in to hunting or is thinking about it, give them this book! I couldn't put it down and read the whole thing in a day. There is something for almost every kind of hunter in Season of Obsession. There is squirrel hunting, pheasant and woodcock hunting, goose, duck and deer hunting. And it is all portrayed very realistically. It amazed me to find someone as passionate about hunting as myself. Buy this book for yourself if you are a hardcore hunter or if you are trying to introduce someone new to the sport. You won't regret it.

Rating: Summary: Inspiring Passion Review: What a fantastic read!!! This is my first book about hunting that I've read--I've never been hunting before, so it was interesting and very entertaining to hear about it from a first person view. The stories are fun and real, and on each page, you feel electrified by the PASSION of this man! More people should be so healthily obsessive about their hobbies! Spring combines hunting techniques with heart, experience with life-changing experiences. His vivid imagery is captivating; it takes you on an autumn journey that makes you feel as if you're right there with him, from the first words to the last. It's simply a beautifully written, honest book, and I highly recommend it. :)
