Summary: Must Reading
Review: Having studied martial arts and jkd inparticular for 25 years I am in total agreement with this book. Like many guys who take self defense seriously no one art or weopon has all the answers. Franco and myself agree that one needs to take a holistic approach to self-defense. THis is not a how to on every technique but gives one an overall view of what real self-defense is all about. I HIGHLY recommend this book. In fact this is where you should start before taking ANY self-defense course. WAY TO GO SAMMY!

Summary: The Final Word
Review: In this book Sammy Franco gives the final word (until his next book comes out) on what is needed to survive the violent streets of today's world. It lays a strong foundation for both the how to and the philosophy and theory underlying actual streetfighting. It warns of the dangers of many old formal schools, and provides the tools needed in the "no rules" situations we risk facing in real life. An excellent book.

Summary: WHAT IS SAMMY AFRAID OF???
Review: Man, this was one weird book!!! Given the price tag, and Mister Franco's reputation, I expected a lot more, but he didn't deliver . . . I guess you're expected to buy the rest of his books and attend his seminars if you want to learn the real "secrets." Very arrogant attitude, and heavy on the machismo, which I didn't much care for. I took note that in the hundreds of photographs of Sammy pretending to spar, he is wearing an automatic pistol and a knife! Why does one need to be carrying a pistol openly in one's dojo? Whom is he trying to impress by this? I also noted that Sammy seemed to be rather uncomfortable in the photograph in which he posed with a large German Shephard . . . I'm assuming that the dog is not his bestest buddy. In this book was disclosed some disturbing information. For example: Mister Franco likes to listen to "Billy Idol" music when he trains, and only one of his students has "earned the right" to wear a black T-shirt (which seems to denote mastery of his "Contemporary Fighting Arts" style). Be advised that most of the 1,001 "Secrets" are simple common sense things that you can find in almost any other book on the subject -- and a few of the "secrets" were either questionable or totally irrelevant (for example, one reads simply: "Evil must be vanquished" -- what the heck is THAT???). I'm not going to speculate upon what type of childhood trauma might've motivated Mister Franco to walk around armed to the teeth, present himself to the world as the "Baddest Man Alive," and write atrocities like "1,001 Street Fighting Secrets," but I certainly will NOT be recommending this overpriced book to you or anyone else! I gave it two stars simply due to the fact that it is not altogether bad.

Summary: Sort of an Update of "Tao of Jeet Kune Do"
Review: The format and layout is similar to "Tao of JKD" but also covers weapons, including handguns. Offers some (about 300 "secrets") useful "concepts/principles" but if you are expecting instruction on techniques, you'll be disappointed. Many (another 600 "secrets") of the 1001 "secrets" are really so obvious that readers will find themselves saying-"duh." The rest of the so called street-fighting principles (that leaves 101) are just the author's recitation of his political philosophy. All in all, not junk, but you'll get more for your money (..."1001 Secrets" is expensive) out of Bruce Lee's original than out of this imitation.

Summary: Sort of an Update of "Tao of Jeet Kune Do"
Review: This is one of those books you can go back to over and over and find some concept, technique or drill that you can incorporate into your own training. Franco teaches and trains for street self-defense and as such, some of his offerings in this book might surprise those martial artists who train only for competition karate. Yes, street fighting and tag karate are not the same.

It's a wonderful, well-written book, a text that you will get something from every time you thumb through it.

Summary: Failed to meet my high expectations
Review: This was a pretty good book, but a lot of the 1,001 "secrets" left a lot to be desired. Most of the info was simple common sense. Didn't much care for the author's arrogance, either. Be advised that this is a fairly expensive book, considering what you get for your money.
