Rating: Summary: A must for all sports scholars and fans Review: "Many countries around the world have found that their traditional sports and agmes have fallen into decline and, in some cases, have even been completely forgotten. One of UNESCO's duties is to rectify this decline and the publication of this new encyclopedia is a step in the right direction. It's partly in response to the International Charter of Physical Eduction and Sport which has called for different countries to set up sporting programmes which respect 'the institutional, cultural, socio-economic and climatic conditions of each country' (article 3) and the fact that 'the collection, provision and dissemination of information and documentation on physical education and sport constitute a major necessity' (article 8). Yes, sport and physical education are indeed based on local traditional games, but that isn't to say that more popular, global sports and games are any less culturally significant. In fact, learning ancient techniques and traditions increases the influence that popular sports and physical education has on communities and allows individuals to connect with one another and different people around the world to join together in a common cause. The author of this fine work, Wojciech Liponski, has done widespread research and has compiled information on more than 3,000 sports and games from various world cultures. There's no doubting that this remarkable reference book will help the international community to learn about the huge richness and diversity of traditional indigenous sports." OLYMPIC REVIEW, Jan/Feb/March 2004
