Rating: Summary: Rushin writes thoughts that relate to everyone Review: A book that summs up what everyone's perception of everyone else is, Road Swing is a must read for anyone with a basic knowledge of sports and a healthy sense of humor. Granted, I read most of this book late at night, at my giddiest, but during the day, the anecdotes are equally hilarious.
Rating: Summary: Shallow and disappointing Review: From the netherworld an irresistible impulse directed me to start and finish "Road Swing" in one day: July 4, 1999--the anniversary of our forefathers' indelible vision of our nation's destiny. And what a people evolved from their revolutionary thinking! Did our forefathers play football? Baseball? Chip tennis balls through basketball hoops to satisfy their hunger with "buy one-get one free" Big Mac coupons? No. But given freedom, surely they had to know it was inevitable that their descendants someday would. Anyhow I did it, Steve Rushin. All I ask now is that I may take my place in the fleeting and obscure annals of Sports Trivia Americana.
Rating: Summary: Just Perfect Review: I purchased this book for my vacation, not actually knowing what it was about. I spent all of my vacation doing nothing else but reading it. I was entranced. "Road Swing" made me want to jump in my car and drive. One of the best books I've read in a long time. I patiently wait for his next adventure. Write on Steve.
Rating: Summary: A fast read. Too bad Review: I'm only half way through this gem and I find myself thinking "don't read it too fast, man. You don't want it to end."Rushin meshes sports and americana like well, gretzky and messier, pippen and jordan, torville and dean (okay, that's taking it too far.) A must read for people with a pulse.
Rating: Summary: A great read from a great writer. Review: Rushin has a wonderfully engaging style (his SI "Point After" column "Just Tell It Like It Is" from a few years back is the funniest thing I've ever read). Now, with "Road Swing," I was rereading paragraphs just to marvel at his sentence construction. As a rule, I wait for the paperback, but not with "Road Swing." Splurge on Rushin!
Rating: Summary: A great read! Review: Rushin proves again why he's what I miss most about canceling my SI subscription. This book made me wish I was riding shotgun with him. This guy can not only identify a good story, he can tell it. He's hilarious.
Rating: Summary: IN THIS BOOK I ALMOST DIED FROM LAUGHING! Review: This is one of those very rare, well-written, laugh-out-loud books. This book thankfully helped pass the time on a very frustrating day of air travel for me. Yes, although at times somewhat sophomoric, I thoroughly enjoyed Rushin's irreverant observations about sports -- and life -- in America. Two sections above the rest stood out as especially memorable for me (a Minnesota Vikings fan): his memories of the Vikings teams of the 70's, punctuated with a wonderful story of waiting and anticipating Alan Page's granting an autograph; and the story regarding the void left in Cleveland by the departure of the Browns. Write on, Steve, write on!
Rating: Summary: Write another one, Mr. Rushin! Review: to do a search on Steve Rushin and find this to be his only work. His column in SI has been a source of great enjoyment to me over the years but Road Swing is even better. Not a page goes by without me finding myself laughing out loud! Sometimes politically incorrect, always irreverent, this book is THE BEST sports humor book I've read. This from a man whose personal collection of sports literature is in the hundreds. If you enjoy reading about sports (heck, if you enjoy reading!), get this book...you won't be disappointed.
