Rating: Summary: Rebel Hearts, to the bitter end. Review: Rebel Hearts is a novel set in a somewhat futuristic setting, involving the fictional land of Freyerland (seemingly situated on a planet other than Earth) and the people who live there. Although it tackles a lot of good issues and gives an excellent account of what is must be like to grow up in a strongly patriotic dictatorship, I feel this story fails to stand up as a good piece of literature by itself.
We follow the main character, Martin Guerin, as he slowly changes from being an enthusiastic Freedom Scout at Summerfield Academy, to becoming a disaffected youth, trying to escape from what he used to represent. Throughout this process we learn a lot about Freyerland and its people.
However, the ending of this book left me with a flat feeling. After a lot of good build up, there just wasn't a good enough end to the story. Whether this is because the author couldn't figure out where to take things next, or is working on a follow up novel, or had finished telling the story that he wanted to tell, I don't know.
Should there ever be a follow up novel, I would read it with interest and it would probably improve my opinion if this book substantially.
