Summary: Well-Crafted Tale Told With Skill
Review: Mildred D. Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a beautifully told tale spoken with the fine voice of its young narrator, Cassie Logan. It is the story of the Logan family and their struggle to maintain both their small piece of land and their dignity in one tumultuous year, two things not permitted a black family in Mississippi in the early decaces of this century. The author brilliantly captures the times of which she writes but, even more important, captures the people she writes about. There are not characters here who can be simply called victims or survivors or fighters or any other single term. These are fully developed personalities, particulary the children, that speak with authentic and complicated voices and spool out a tale that is heart breaking with equal parts despair and hope. A wonderful book for children.

Summary: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
Review: As I read the book Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry, in my English class. I think that this is the best book that we have read have read all year long. The book at the beginning was quite funny when the kids were walking to school the first day of school, when little man walking step by step watching himself so he wouldn't get all dirty so his mom wouldn't beat him in front of everyone. The first part of the book that made me very angry was when the kid's teacher was handing out books to the two classes and little man stood up in front of the both classes and told Miss Crocker that he did not want the book she gave him because they called the black kids that used those books the "N" word. Then the teacher whipped him and when she was done whipping him his sister explained to him why he would not take the book she gave him. She also returned her book to the teacher and said I do not want my book either. At the end of the school day their teacher went to the other building to talk to Little Man s and Cassie's mother. The teacher explained the whole story to her. She then handed the two books to their mother. Little Man and Cassie's mother took a piece of paper and glued it to the cover of their books and that night when she got home she gave them back their books. The second part of this book that made me very angry was when Cassie, Stacey, and T.J went to get food with Big Momma. When Big Momma was in talking to someone the kids went across the street to a store. On the way back Cassie bumped into Lillian Jean. The white girl makes Cassie apologize to her. She made Cassie get into the street. Then the girl's dad came to find out what was going on. Then the girl's dad made Cassie apologize again. He pushed Cassie down into the street. Big Momma came to the scene and asked the girls what was going on. She made Cassie apologize again. The saddest part in this book is when T.J is killed. This book all and all makes me very mad because of how they treat blacks throughout the story. And when The kids are trying to walk to school and the bus for the white school splashes mad and water all over the kids. The story " Let the circle is unbroken" is way better then this book. In my opinion I don't know because I have never read it. Please let me know what you think of these two books.

Summary: An OK book....
Review: I read this book for English class, and I felt that it was pretty good, but not all that it could have been. I liked the plot and the conversations, but I felt that it really got boring at times. I also don't think that it was very realistic because it seems that everything had to do with the main charactors. The story never talked about what other people were doing, just what the family was doing. Some people might think that it is a good thing (not to talk about people other than the main charactors), but I think that it would have been a good way to say what was happening.

Summary: Great Book for Children!
Review: This book is a rich and rewarding tale of a black family's struggle to survive in an environment that pushes for failure. Each character has a unique personality that brings about unity against people that want them off the land. Readers may tend to feel a sense of hopelessness due to the harsh conditions the Logan family inhabits. The triumph therefore is evident and successfully attained when the roots of survival count.

Concepts that can be discussed in the classroom setting are: RACISM envelops the entire story as the Wallaces, Grangers and Simms' yearn for the Logan's vacating the land and submission to white people. FAMILY surrounds the Logans to establish unity in the face of despair. SURVIVAL is needed thus accounting for acknowledging the racism emanating from the Logan's adversaries. FRIENDSHIP is regarded and exercised as Stacey tries to help T.J. when he is accused of murder.

Overall, I highly recommend this for children ages 10 and up as well as all adults.

Summary: Teaches a lesson to all ages!
Review: In my language arts class, we read this book. It tells the story from a child's point of view. Me being 13, it is a lot better to hear a story from a childs point of view rather than an adults point of view because its not giving me a lecture on the lesson of the story. If it is an adults point of view it gets kinda boring if they are just rumbling on about the same thing over and over. I like this story because it shows how badly people were treated just for the color of their skin. The author expresses the feelings of the characters so thoroughly that you can picture it in your mind. I recommend this book to anyone who loves to study the civil war or just like to read a good book! Thanks Mrs. Ras for letting us read this beautiful novel!

Summary: An VERY good book!
Review: This book really put an impression on me! It was one of the best childrens novels i have ever read! In my reading class we just got done reading it. I love how the author described everything and u got to know the characters so well u thought u knew them as though they were one of your close freinds. And some of them you hate and just want to get in the book and punch! One of my favorite characters was Jeremy, the white boy trying to fit in with the blacks. His charaters was one that really made me think alot. And another character i loved was Mama. This book made me think of my own family and how lucky i am to have everything i have. I saw the movie to this and i was pretty disapointed. This book showed me how bad racism really was! if u ever have the chance to read this book u should! Its really good!

Summary: Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry
Review: The book "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" tells a lot about the time of the great depression and economical problems during the 1930's. In this book the author, Mildred D. Taylor, described thoroughly the racism between the whites and blacks as seen from a child's point of view. I like the point of from a child rather than an adult's point of view because it is easier to understand. When reading this book my emotions changed very frequently between anger and sorrow, when realizing how badly the blacks were treated back then and that the whites were so racist towards them. One of the most memorable moments in the story to me is when the Logan children visit Mr. Berry, a man who is badly burned by white men just because of the color of his skin. Although I have never faced the kind of discrimination that the blacks have received in this book, you can get a good idea by reading this book of this racism that existed back then, and also still exists today. This year in my American Literature class I have learned more about racism than I have ever learned. This book shows the real side of segregation and how awful it really was. I found that the plot unfolded very slowly but the character development kept my interest. This book was very well written and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I highly recommend Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor to all young readers but especially to adults who need to be taught a lesson on racism.

Review: Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry is a interesting book. It talks about racism. It is depressing and happy at times. It is really good book. It is also very descriptive. The book puts you in suspense a lot. You never know what is going to happen. It is a good book for 8 years to adult. Little kids would not understand the book's story. All in all it is a good book.

Summary: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry -- Mildred Taylor's best
Review: Okay first time I saw it, I thought it was going to be boring. But now I'm totally hooked to this family. The book was so interesting and funny at times. It was also kind of sad at the end but that's what made this book so exhilarating. I've read every book that Mildred Taylor have written so far and this is by far the best one she have written. So go out there and read it!
