Rating: Summary: Compelling Reading Review: I really enjoyed this book and the only reason I didn't rate it higher is that I felt there were a few loose ends at the end.Adam Farmer is undergoing psychoanalysis. Little by little he seems to remember things. The more he remembers he finds out that the life he thought he came from is a lie. The author uses interesting story-telling in that some chapters follow the continuing story of Adam making a bicycle trek over a couple of days and encountering attack dogs, bullies, bad weather, and a bike thief, while on the way to meet his father to give a gift. The other chapters are either straight narrative as Adam remembers things and there are also question and answer sessions between Adam and the analysist that is interrogating him. The varied writing style makes the book flow by pretty fast. I was able to get through this one in a few hours.
Rating: Summary: Just when I thought Cormier's work couldn't get any better.. Review: Wow! All I can say is WOW! WOWOWOWOWOWOWOW! I Am the Cheese is so amazing. The writing style is amazing, and don't even get me started on the surprises at the end. I never expected that Adam or Paul or whoever was insane! And WOW! The symbolism of the title, being revealed at the end! GENIUS! The cheese stands alone and Adam or Paul is the cheese, and therefore stands alone. The repetition of the opening paragraph at the end was effective, I think. I truly believe "Brint" is working to see if Adam or Paul can remember who killed his mother and father. I agree with Brint in thinking it is personell number 2222 (Grey) because in Adam or Paul's flashback to when his mother died, he mentioned gray pants and said it was "him." All in all, this novel was a wonderful read an I would sincerely reccomend it to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: One of my favorite books I have ever read is by Robert Cormier. This book is titled I Am the Cheese. This mind-twisting book starts out with a kid named Adam in two different scenarios. Those scenarios are he and his family going through some hard times because his parents know he his suspecting something strange about them. The other scenario is Adam traveling from Monument, Massachusetts all the way to Rutterburg, Vermont. The catch his he's on his bike. Adam eventually finds out he is living in a fiction book. His Father is running from a special organization that he protested against a few years ago. He hired the man named Grey, or was it? Grey gave them new identities and new occupations. Then they have to take an urgent vacation and they see a... Find out what happens by reading this amazing book that I strongly recommend.
Rating: Summary: Disturbing and emotionally manipulative Review: Cormier writes a book that starts out so obviously devoid of hope and full of fear and sadness that one imagines that it will indeed get better. While his writing is compelling, Cormier plays on all of the human trigger points by portraying parental deaths, use of mind control and truth serum, and a totalitarian government absolutely lacking in any of the moral characteristics of humanity. If you like that sort of thing with a sweet and hopeful twist, try Margaret Peterson Haddix's Among the Hidden- a book that children ought to read. This one, however, will disturb and psychologically fray them. If you are a sensitive soul, then don't bother with this book. It is a tale of betrayal. When I read a book, I trust the author who is building the tale to have some respect for the audience- particularly when that audience is children. There are many far more delicate and intricate tales for children that explore the human psyche and address deep meanings that are much better. Another example of a great series of books to try starts with Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game, which relies only partially on an emotional wrenching for its impact and genuinely strives for both some care for the reader, and very hard to address the posited philosophical and moral problems. Cormier relies exclusively on the shock value of his twisted ending for his accolades. But many could do it. What other writer would go so far in a book for children? I was absolutely shocked when I saw how the book award givers fell for it and gave this book all of the designations that it appears to have won.
Rating: Summary: a bad book. Review: I read the book I Am the Cheese. Robert Cormier found a way to make this book extremely confusing but in the end is well written. The story is mostly about a boy who struggles to find out about his parents and what happened to them. For a large part of the book he is riding his bike to his father's house in Rutterburg, Vermont. Adam other wise known as Paul runs into problems when he is riding he bike from Monument, Massachusetts to Rutterburg, Vermont to his fathers house. One of the problems that Adam runs into is that he didn't take one of his pills that he needed to take each morning to make it through the day. Another problem that Adam ran into was that he stopped at a restaurant to get some soup and some boys came up to him and started talking to him and they followed him and ran him off the road and he went unconscious but a nice couple found him and to him to a motel. Along the way and during the book Adam finds out more and more about his real life for example he found out that he has a totally different life, identity, and family then he grew up to know. Throughout the book I found it very hard to understand lots of things. Such as the author would change subject every other chapter. For example Farmer would be riding his bike one chapter, and then during the next chapter he would be in the hospital in a therapy session. Another thing about the book that was hard to understand was that in the beginning of the book the author doesn't tell you who anyone is so you get confused. There were also a few good things that I liked in the book. For example the book wanted you want to keep on reading. Such as when Adam was riding his bike I wanted to know what was going to happen next so I just kept on reading. Overall I wouldn't recommend this book unless you like confusing books. As you can see, I have given a summary of the book, and my opinion. I don't think that I would read this book again.
Rating: Summary: Great Book!!!!!! Review: I Am the Cheese is a great book. It takes you the book's world. GOOOD BOOK!(A little hard to understand, but good!)
Rating: Summary: No Cheese Please! Review: This psychological thriller is disturbing without redemption. Beware that this is a "hook" book: once you start to read it you cannot stop. There are blanks to be filled in and a twisted ending. If you liked the movie The Ring then you will probably enjoy this book. If you are like me and hate this sort of book, stay far away!!!
Rating: Summary: The cheese stands alone. Review: Fourteen year-old Adam Farmer suspects something isn't right. As he begins to search for answers to many clues, he finds that he is not who his parents told him he was nor are his parents who he thought they were. As Adam rides his bike to visit his father, his story unfolds. Simultaneously, a therapist is trying to help Adam uncover the secrets. Who can Adam trust? What is real? The clues are in the reading. Is it government espionage and secret identities? Is it subterfuge and witness protection or is it mental illness and a lapse from reality? Robert Cormier is a true master of suspense. To weave a story this complex, this complicated and this intriguing in a young adult format is truly a work of genius. This book requires close attention to detail or one could easily get confused and lose the meaning of the story as well as the impact of the ending.
Rating: Summary: the cheese stands alone Review: Let me tell you that this is one of the strangest and most intriguing books that I have read in a long time. I must also tell you that there is a kind of surprise ending that will shock you, because his whole journey on the bike is really a great, masterful symbolic experience that will take you to places of discovery. It is heart breaking and intriguing at the same time- you can't ever put the darn book down because you always want to know what's going to happen next! The writing style is superb- this is the third book that I have read of Courmier's and I must say that he is up there with JD Salinger- I really like his work. It is great for young adults, teens, and older adults alike. It is fast paced and mystifying. The whole thing is trying to uncover this Adam Farmer's past and find out his true identity. Where is he right now, and why is he there? Why does he need a doctor to help him think of his past? What has this boy gone through? It is an awesome book to read and you will be punched in the stomach by the time you reach the end. Yes, it is that suspenseful!
Rating: Summary: the weridest book i've ever read Review: wow. this book was really, well...different let's put it. it centers around a young, mentally unstable boy, Adam Farmer, who thinks that he is riding his bike to see his father. Adam is really in a psychiatric hospital being treated, and his "doctor," Brint, is trying to help him recall memories. All his memories lead up to Adam remembering something great, something so great that it could treat him mental "issues." This book has an ending one would not expect.
