Rating: Summary: Painting the Black Review: The author of this book is Carl Deuker. This book would be under the sports category, but it does have other topics in the story. In this book, a young boy has no friends in his neighborhood and doesn't really play sports. Then one day another boy (the same age as him) moves in across the street. They become friends and enjoy hanging out and playing baseball throughout the book and experience many different adventures. I have read other Carl Deuker books and this one is better and more exciting than his other ones. I had read On the Devil's Court and Danger Zone and this one was clearly more interesting nd had better sporting events. When I read this book I reacted in a happy way. The book was very good and it really good and kept me wanting to read it. On page 54, "I felt so bad that I said that to him. I can't lose him as my friend, I just can't afford that." This just made me think how hard it has been for him to go through life with no friends. Now, he has one friend and he almost lost him. I just keep on thinking about this and it always makes me try to see and feel what he is feeling. He must be so glad now that he finally has a friend and he knows that he can't let him lose this one. Even though this book was tremendously well written, there were some things I didn't enjoy so much. Some of the dialogues were too long and weren't necessary to what was actually happening and some of the characters weren't described too well. I think that if you like sports, then you will like this book. Also, if you have read Deuker books in the past, this one is better than all of them. Good Bye.
Rating: Summary: A book from English class Review: The book Painting the Black by Carl Deuker is a story of a teenage boy named Ryan Ward who has been scared to play any physical sport since he broke his ankle while playing baseball when he was younger. After Josh Daniels moves in next door to Ryan he changes Ryan's way of life. Josh convinces Ryan to play baseball with him and Ryan becomes adapt at catching Josh's hard pitches. Through a series of events Ryan must learn the meaning of friendship and must choose between doing what is right and getting a chance at winning the baseball championship game. Painting the Black is a well written novel. Although the book moves a little slow in the middle, it keeps the reader interested. The vivid pictures that the author creates make the reader feel as if they are right there with Ryan catching Josh's sliders and fastballs. Painting the Black is not only a novel about baseball it also corresponds with life living on the border of right and wrong. This book teaches many life lessons, such as why a person should tell the truth and doing what is right even if it means losing your best friend. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes baseball or teenage life.
Rating: Summary: English Assignment Review: The novel Painting the Black is about a high school senior, Ryan Ward, who was an outcast at school until his new neighbor, Josh Daniels, inspired him. Josh was a superb athlete, excelling in football and baseball. He helps Ryan develop a newfound love for baseball, and even persuades him to try out for the school's team, even though Ryan was very reluctant saying, "I'm nervous. You know you're going to make the team, but I don't" (Page125). Ryan was very skeptical about his talent. He made the team, however, and eventually he started as catcher. Josh was Ryan's hero, leading the team to victory. His attitude changed, though, when he witnessed Josh and another guy assaulting Monica Roby, a girl in their class who had made some smart remarks about Josh. Josh stated, "It was a prank, a joke, that's all" (Page 196). Ryan knew that the situation was serious, though, and was faced with the decision whether he should keep a secret regarding who assaulted Monica Roby, or if he should lift the burden off his shoulders by telling; he knew if he told, that he could risk losing the state baseball tournament because the team's star pitcher would be suspended. No matter what Ryan does, his dad says he has "greatness" in him (Page 242). I thought that this was a very well-written novel. It is very enjoyable to read even if you are not a baseball fan, but I would defiently recommend it to someone who is. I really liked the character Ryan. I appreciated how he was hardworking, dedicated, and a team player. However, I disliked the character Josh. At first I thought that he was a good influence for Ryan because he inspired him to do his best, but then I realized that his athletic demeanor was just a front he put on for his macho attitude. Also, I liked Ryan's family, and how they were compassionate, loving, and supportive throughout the novel. Overall, I think that Painting the Black was one of the best novels I have read in my high school career. I would give it a four star rating.

Ever since the injury he has not wanted to play again, until a new kid moves next door. Ryan's new neighbor turns out to be one of those great athletes that are good at any sport they play. When spring comes around and Ryan shows up for the tryouts, he doesn't know what to think. He doesn't know if he will make the team. Do you think that Ryan will make the team? If you want to find out, read the book. The book painting the Black by Carl Deuker is a very well written and thought out book. I really enjoyed reading this novel. First of all, the whole theme of the book is about baseball and I am a baseball nut. I like stories that there are odds to overcome and surpass before you get what you want. I really like how the author has other things going on in this novel as well. I really connected with this book because when I was a freshman trying out for baseball I really didn't know if I was going to make the team. But the main character in this story, Ryan, is trying out his senior year in high school. As you have read, the story is about overcoming odds to get to where you want to be. Everyone should connect with this book in one way or another.
