Rating: Summary: Action, history, and suspense. Review: Imagine the year is 1863, just after the Battle of Gettysburg, and you've lost your father and all three brothers in the war. What would you do if a confederate soldier, your fierce enemy, needs help? And would it be right to leave your grieving mother to fight for the cause? These are questions Chigger, the main character of RETREAT FROM GETTYSBURG, faces. Kathleen Ernst's careful research and immense knowledge of this tragic time in history permeate the book. My fourth-grade students get caught up in the fast-moving plot and are drawn to the authentic illustrations. Ernst's lyrical use of language also make this a delightful read aloud.
