Summary: Bad design
Review: Stay away from this unit. I purchase the e740 back in January of 2003 and it has not work right from day one. Toshiba has had it more then I have. Toshiba does not carry the unit on their site anymore. Makes you wonder why? The new PC 2003 OS is not available for the unit and product support is limited. I you have one backup you data as soon as you enter it.

Summary: A fine PDA but not a great one
Review: It is a good PDA but for shure it is not the best one.
the Cons.

1) is the battery life is not the best one, and if you don't charge it frecuently you can lose all your data, it had happen to my just twice in the 9 moth that I had own it
2) It is big,
3) you can not upgrade it to Windows Mobile 2003
4) it has the worst sound

Pro.

1) the USB/VGA expansion pack is great
2) the Wi-Fi integrated

Also I lost the stylus pen, so I bouth from Toshiba the pack of 3 stylus pen, for my soprise they where Belkin pen's in a Toshiba case. and they are really bad because they scratch the screen.
I use screen protector, and I have to change it every 3 weeks becouse the replacement stylus pen scrach it.

Summary: Piece of Junk!
Review: I bought this new. It has never, EVER been reliable. Connection quirks, storage quirks, lockups, you name the problem, the E740 can produce it.

I've tried upgrading firmware, software, OS and still I have a $600 piece of junk on my hands.

I DO NOT recommend this product - spare yourself.

Summary: My condolences...
Review: I'm not an e740 owner, but I got very close to buying one, I'm happy I learned how crappy it is in time! I've had an iPaq H3630 (yes the very first one!) since it was released - people complained about that too, but never in the same way as with this Toshiba PDA! I've only had to replace the stylus lock (done it myself!), otherwise I had no problems whatsoever, not even with tired batteries. I'm using the latest ActiveSync and I've even dropped it on the floor a few times!

Compaq did it and did it right the first time, and they support their products, sometimes even after they've been discontinued. They said they would release a PPC 2002 upgrade and they did - even at a reasonable price, too bad PPC 2003 won't fit in a 16 MB ROM, otherwise I think they would have released that too...

I'm in the market for a smaller, faster unit with built-in WiFi (and preferably also Bluetooth) and built-in CF slot - too bad the DELL Axiom X3 doesn't have Bluetooth and CF, otherwise I would go for that - any recommendations? (same features as the Toshiba, only reliable and equally aggressively priced).

Good luck to all you unhappy Toshiba users...

Summary: the customers were the test subjects
Review: I had bought the Toshiba e740 in March '03. It was great with the 802.11b and everything else, but then came some problems. A recall was issued and i needed to send my unit back. Next, the pda would die out on me for no reason, or it would die intermittently when i would shut it off. I think Toshiba's customer service was great, as compared to what many other people say about Toshiba's customer care. The only thing irking me most of the time was the fact that Toshiba brushed the E740 off their website completely for the e750/755, and probably knowing deep inside that the E740 was an experimental PDA used on the customers to root out problems. I found myself using my old Dayrunner most of the time, which is pretty much defeating the purpose of me buying the e740.
I had since gotten rid of the E740 in exchange for an E755. It's worth buying the E750/755 rather than dealing with the E740, even though the used/refurb prices for the e740 look attractive. The E750/755 is faster, has a much better screen size and clarity, can be obtained with Windows Mobile 2003, and still supports the Hi-Capacity battery I used for the E740.

Summary: Loss of Data and Programs - No longer supported
Review: I bought this product when it first came out last December and even though it isn't one of the serial numbers that was recalled anytime my battery runs down to 0 you lose all of your data and any programs you have installed. This has happened to me on vacation and on an overseas business trip and makes the product worthless.

Toshiba no longer suppports this product so if you get a bad unit you are on your own.

Summary: e740 and the pocket pc 2003 upgrade cover up exposed
Review: This exposes the real problem ........"Unfortunately, Toshiba may not be able to help even if it wants to. The e750's PXA255 processor is a replacement for the e740's PXA250, which we understand was not without more than its share of bugs, particularly with the CPU cache and PCMCIA support. When Intel releases a new processor, it usually continues to offer the previous version, often at a lower price. That's not the case with the PXA255. As Intel's developer site notes: "The Intel PXA250 processors are no longer available for new development and have been replaced by the Intel PXA255 processor."

Indeed, what Intel markets as the PXA255 was originally to be released as the PXA250 stepping C1, according to an Intel Product Change Notification document seen by The Register. Not only does it fix the PXA250's prime glitches, but adds some new, performance boosting features of its own."....."Toshiba denied that the issues surrounding the PXA250 were the reason for the initial refusal to offer e740 users the update. "To date Toshiba has not received any customer complaints around [the bugs]," said the spokeswoman. "The PXA 250 processor is not subject to any recall and is currently being sold by most Pocket PC device manufacturers."

So, what we really need is a 2003 upgrade or a recall on the Intel PXA250. Contact Toshiba and request your upgrade or a recall and let them take their pick.

Summary: Hope for the Toshiba e740 owner
Review: Of course, I think it's great but then I have been in denial about the Toshiba e740's issues for some time. First I couldn't get it to stop hard resetting. Then I read online (Amazon - I think) that you have to put a small piece of tape over the latch to the battery door because normal handling unintentionally disconnects the battery. The tape seemed to really help but I put the device away for awhile anyway- I had not enjoyed the time spent trying to make it work. I have once again returned to incorporate it into my life. I started having more problems with hard resets and I kept checking to confirm that I had the battery latch taped together 'properly'. I finally realized that the battery was still a few microns loose from the case despite the fact that the latch is closed and taped. So, I put some wide packaging tape firmly across the back of the battery up to the back of the device - the hard resets have stopped. (oh yeah - does it look classy - I might as well repair the bridge of my glasses with white tape while I am at it). I must milk this device for it's productivity promises as I paid full price for it and..well...I am too proud to admit defeat.

Summary: Pocket PC 2003 NOT SUPPORTED
Review: While early to market with this XSCALE 400mhz processor, it was never any faster than the IPAQs of its time. I paid extra for this model with XSCALE processor, because the upcoming Pocket PC 2003 OS was about to release the potentional of XSCALE. However, Toshiba now says they will NOT SUPPORT POCKET PC 2003 for the E740. Since you can only get Pocket PC 2003 as an upgrade from the hardware supplier, and Toshiba REFUSES TO SELL A POCKET PC 2003 for the E740, you are STUCK with performance equal to lesser hardware of its time. I should have saved the extra money and bought an IPAQ running the ARM. If you are buying this item now (new or used) you should expect a SIGNIFICANT DISCOUNT, since the OS that really takes advantage of the XSCALE processor is not, nor will not be available for it. It works ok, but the fact that I paid more for the same performace as an ARM processor IPAQ is DISSAPOINTING. At the same price level, stick to the more compatible IPAQ's or the Dell Axiom.
