Summary: Going by the Book
Review: As a Scot, and someone who writes about Scotland, guide books get fairly rough treatment at my hands. They occupy a difficult position - they are books, designed to be read, but they're also tools, designed to be used. They have to be 'a good read', and they also have to be accurate and functional. I look at a lot of guide books - Alan Murphy's is definitely my current favourite. Murphy conveys information very succinctly. He crams it into nearly 700 pages of text. The content is well laid-out, accessible, and, in my experience, accurate. It's impossible to sum up a nation in 700 pages, but then the point of travelling isn't always to know where you're going and what to expect. Murphy provides the perfect travelling companion - knowledgeable, helpful, and easily slipped into a pocket or rucksack. Guide books get you there, the rest's up to you.
