Summary: Two stars
Review: The chatty opinions got a little tiresome. What I look for in a guidebook is information and this had very little compared to the two others I had along - Lonely Planet Hawaii and Fodor's. The activities were mostly geared to those thinking they can still find hidden places on the island. When I reached their "secret" snorkeling gems, there were forty others there and the water wasn't as clear as places right in front of our hotel. Snorkeling Mauai is a more relieable and useful book.

Summary: A Maui Must!
Review: This book is a requirement if you plan to visit Maui. Even if you purchase other guidebooks, bring along this one to give you insight into off-the-beaten path activities, local restaurants and sights you cannot get from any other book.

These authors are refreshingly honest. They live on the islands, so instead of a precursory view of restaurants from a single visit, they give their opinions after eating at places multiple times over the course of multiple visits. Same goes for attractions.

At times, their accuracy was frightening. (i.e. the guy eating the bananas that waves to you from a bridge on the north coast.) They really know this island!

They also offer opinions- some may not agree with their judgment, but most of the time we found them to be dead-on. For example, if they said a restaurant did not have ambience, it did NOT. Also, a great book for those with a sense of humor!

We found some of the restaurant references to be out of date (using the 2001 edition), as will happen in any tourist locale. You may want to call ahead to make sure lesser-known restaurants are still in business.

Summary: Incomparable to other guidebooks
Review: This is the best guidebook I have read for any vacation destination. Its a quick read but covers all of the necessary information with great detail where required. Makes the other books seem completely inadequate. Highly recommended for anyone planning a trip to Maui.

Summary: A must if you're going to Maui
Review: Finally, a guide book that gives honest opinions- good AND bad! This is a must for the Hana drive. You'll see so much that others miss. Make sure you get this well before you leave so you can take advantage of the helpful pointers on, for example, what to pack to wear on the volcano. I would have been lost in Maui without this book.

Summary: I LIVE on Maui...
Review: The Maui Revealed is written very well and allows you to make up your own mind as to what you want to do. I hate guide books that review everything with a positive note, meaning that EVERY restaurant is good, and EVERY hotel is wonderful. This is not so, they will give it you how it is, straight to the point, and the reasons why they did or did not like it. And that way you can make up your own mind as to if that is the place for you or not. Moreover they encourage the reader to have their own adventures, but they tell and show how you can go about and doing it, not simply telling you to travel around the island. They guide you through which roads you need to take, and although they tell you where all the sights are they do rank them in a way so that you can decide if you have enough time to stop or not. More importantly you really get a sense that these people that reviewed the book really did their homework, tried all the different things on Maui, and actively tried to seek out alternatives. I lived on Maui my whole life, and I recommend this book to anyone that asks me, and I myself use the BIG ISLAND REVEALED and the KAUAI REVEALED when I travel to the other islands. A very well written book that will allow you to travel Maui seamlessly, but more importantly will put out options for you to be able to explore what YOU want to see, not only what the reviewer likes

Summary: Fabulous buy
Review: I used this book extensively while we spent 10 days on Maui recently (12/28/1001 - 1/7/2002). We planned our trip entirely around this book to experince much of Maui as possible including which resorts to pick for our stay. I also used their website for indepth comments on the resorts and hotels. They were dead on with their accurate and impartial write ups on many things.

There were a couple of things I did not agree on but they were indeed minor. I wish they had some more input to the drive to Hana via the south of the island. They had a huge hole in that section. Also, I was not impressed with their review on the Old Lahina Luau. A ridiculously expensive attraction that had poor service, hardly any good food and watered down Mai Tais. The show itself was fascinating even though it was difficult to hear the actual annonuncer.

Well nothing is ever perfect but this book should give you all the insights into Maui you will ever need. A must buy for any traveler.

Summary: Over hyped
Review: The text is out of a promotional brochure, like a chamber of commerce piece or an advertisement. I read the book from cover for cover and it showed no compassion for the people of the island or their history. Very slick and colourful but the material it contained was very shallow and disparaging. I found a good map and a rental car are all you need to see Maui and form your own opinions.

Summary: Great, great, great
Review: As a first time visitor to Maui, my husband and I found this book invaluable. I reviewed it quickly before we left and then as we made our plans each day, I would read up on that part of the Island again. We kept the book in the car and referred to it often, especially during our trip to Hana and around the West Coast. The restaurant reviews were right on!!!
We highly recommend this book to anyone considering a trip to Maui.

Summary: Great guidebook!
Review: This book was extremely helpful in the planning of my trip to Maui. It provides detailed information on a broad array of activities, so it should appeal to virtually any traveller. One plus is that it does not shy away from warning readers about vendors that are less than superb.

Once on Maui, the detailed maps were a great help, as were the dining reviews.

You could probably find more complete sources on a particular aspect of Maui, but I doubt that any would be more comprehensive on ALL of Maui. If you want one guidebook, this is it.

Summary: GOING TO MAUI? THEN BUY THIS BOOK!
Review: I just got back from Maui (12/01) and we had a great trip. I did extensive research and bought 5 books on the island. This is the only book I ended up taking with me. This book is very funny, honest, and accurate. Even my husband, who isn't the guidebook type, was really impressed with this book. It saved us money and stress! Make sure to go their fabulous website and read their extensive reviews on hotels, condo's, etc. You can read their honest, accurate reviews and see the lay-out of the property. This book can help you from being ripped off. Thanks to the book, we stayed at two great places (Napili Bay & at Hana), but while I was there I noted some real dumps that were not as close to the beach as their websites said they were. Also thanks to this book, we got the off the beaten path and saw some great sites that a lot of other tourists didn't seem to know about. My only faults with the book is that it is time for them to do an update on restaurants. Many of them that we looked for were out of business. My suggestion is to make your own food and buy the wonderful fresh fruit that the island offers. The restaurants on the island seem overpriced and not that good. Maui probably isn't the place to go for gourmet food, but it is definitley the place to go for unparalleled beauty and relaxation. My only other criticism is I didn't think the Warren & Anabelle show should rate so high. A lot of people who went to the show really seemed to enjoy it. I thought it was kind of corney and the magic wasn't that impressive (mainly card tricks), but if you like to go to Vegas shows, you probably would enjoy this kind of thing. Still, I highly recommend Maui and this book. It is the best tourist guidebook I have ever read!
