Rating: Summary: What happened to Peter? Review: This is not the author I fell in love with years ago. I have read every new book and grabbed this one as soon as I could. However by the end of 80 or so pages I wondered what happened to Peter? The prose seemed forced and there are a number or errors, typo's, etc. that no publisher or author should have left intact. The stories compared with many writers work are not bad - compared to his earlier work they stink! In short if you love his other books this is a tolerable book with some gems here and there. Peter Jenkins is changing. It happens to all of us as we get older and I have always enjoyed the changes he has gone through in the past. I'm not sure I like this new Peter Jenkins enough to spend some hours with him in a book. Some writers would be proud of Looking For Alaska because they had done their best. Jenkins should be ashamed not because it is bad, but simply becuase he could have done so much better.
Rating: Summary: Inspiration on many fronts Review: I truly enjoyed this book for several reasons. 1) I can't imagine a better introduction to what Alaska must look, smell, sound, and taste like than by 'following along' with Peter Jenkins and his family, 2) the book reconnected me with that healthy curiousity in the details of the world around me, especially the human ones and 3) I found myself writing and writing (about my own experiences) after I finished the book. Peter Jenkins somehow gives great nobility and honor to the subtle details, and these make all the difference. How do people talk about things here? What's posted on the community bulletin board? Who is the focal point of this town and why? The book is sort of a act of "Vipassana" (if I can say that) - observing as a fine art and spiritual practice. I felt encouraged and excited by this writing to turn off the television and notice the world around me.
Rating: Summary: "Seeing" Alaska Review: I know Jeff King, the three time Iditarod winner. I worry about Tina, did she find her native self? I lived 60 miles from the nearest village with the Eric Jayne family. I was just a few yards from a brown bear, and he didn't even see me. I wasn't really there, Peter Jenkins put me there. I have read many best selling travel books, and this is by far the very best. Many of us walked across America with Peter, now put on some warm clothes and take a trip to beautiful Alaska. You won't regret it, and Alaska will become one of your favorite States.
Rating: Summary: You won't be disappointed.... Review: "Looking for Alaska" is one of the most enjoyable, heart-warming, soul-satisfying books I have ever read. Peter Jenkins is a truly gifted writer.
Rating: Summary: HE SPOKE AT COLLEGE, HE IS THE BEST SPEAKER/WRITER. Review: Peter spoke at our college, Mary Washington College this week. We have had many of the big time speakers/authors here, the big best sellers, and all the students and even the older folks said he was the best. So after I heard him speak I decided to read his book, LOOKING FOR ALASKA. He is an awesome writer. He brings Alaska to life in ways I could never have imagined. I feel as if I know and care for many of the characters he brought to life with his descriptive words and one thing, he is not afraid to tell it like people really are, he is not a politically correct woosie like so many today. I will now begin reading all his other books, ALONG THE EDGE OF AMERICA, A WALK ACROSS AMERICA and more. I wonder, where is he going next? Peter, we are waiting.
Rating: Summary: True Alaska Review: No words can adequately describe this book. Peter Jenkins' book is the closest one can get to being in Alaska without the cost of an airline ticket, lodging, etc. He captures the true essence of Alaska and the many who reside there. Forget the cruises to the inner passage, Jenkins' book will expose you to more about Alaska than a week-long voyage. He captures the stories, legends and eccentricities about Alaska in a way no other author has. I highly recommend "Looking for Alaska" and any other of Jenkins' books!
Rating: Summary: MY MOTHER SAID A MUST READ. SHE WAS MORE THAN RIGHT. WOW! Review: My mother gave me a gift for graduating from college. I told her I wanted to go to Alaska she said that she would send me for a month. However, she said I must read this book she gave me as a gift. I was thinking yeah right, read something she felt was a must read. She claimed reading this book would make her money go much further and lay an importnat foundation for my journey. I agreed to read it, she said she would test me to make sure I did. Half way through I went to her and told her she was more than right. The book was already awesome, it became better as I read on. This book, "LOOKING FOR ALASKA" by Peter Jenkins did magnify my experience and enrich my amazing journey through a bit of Alaska. Thanks Peter Jenkins, your the kind of person I would actually like to hang out with, and I can't believe it, but my mother says the same thing. I will now read your other books before I begin law school.
Rating: Summary: the ultimate alaska sampler platter Review: a little bit about a lot of alaska. great overall read.
Rating: Summary: A MUST HAVE ON YOUR BOOKSHELF! Review: Peter Jenkins has accurately defined Alaska like no other! From Hydaburg to Seward, into Aialik Bay on a kayak, and down the Haul Road to visit "bushy" Alaskans on Chandalar Lake - Peter weaves his storytelling magic to bring the most majestic and unruly place to life on the pages in front of us. With undeniable talent, his 20 year old daughter Rebekah pens her experiences as her father's sometimes companion and explorer. Her easy flowing words are soul searching and have an instant effect on readers. I thought her literary contributions in the book LOOKING FOR ALASKA were the perfect touch! This book presents itself as a love letter to Alaska. All the miles that Peter traveled almost seem as if he wanted to explore every part of the beautiful, sometimes dangerous, state; as if he couldn't miss a single acre. The beauty of the book lay in the way he described the atmosphere, the glaciers, the animals. Each place Peter and his family visited came to life so vividly, as if it wasn't across the country, but only next door. To describe so accurately the lives and personalities of Alaskans is perhaps the best homage anyone could pay to the Alaska that most people take for granted. It is refreshing to pick up a book and find that it is more than you hoped it could be, and if it can inspire you, that is even better! I am a first time Peter Jenkins reader and now I am on a massive search for all of his books! I don't know how I got along without them before! I wouldn't be surprised if LOOKING FOR ALASKA stirs up a lust for exploring in any soul.
Rating: Summary: THE ONLY BOOK YOU NEED Review: Wow! Just returned from three weeks in Alaska. I prepared for my life-long dream by reading Peter Jenkins' newest book LOOKING FOR ALASKA. It excited me more than I already was, such an original, fresh look at the whole place this book is. No wonder it is a best seller. He actually lived there for a year and a half gathering all the stories that fill this incredible book. While my girl friend and I traveled over five thousand miles throughout Alaska, to several of the places he wrote about, we read it again to each other and were even more impressed with it while we were immersed in Alaska. This book is destined to be another classic by him.
