Summary: Inland Northwest hiking guide has been regularly updated.
Review: "100 Hikes in the Inland Northwest" has kept up with changes ranging from new phone numbers to relocated trailheads and reconstructed trails with four updated versions since the book was first published in 1987. The version being sold is current in almost every respect, maintaining this guide as the Bible for hikers exploring this marvelously diverse region of Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana and British Columbia. Also, since the book was first published, the authors have donated half of the sales profits to projects that improve the experience for hikes found in the book. Among them are the refurbishing of the Little Snowy Top Lookout in the Salmo-Priest Wilderness, constructing the Snow Peak shelter on the crest of Washington's Kettle Range, rebuilding the West Fork Cabin in the Idaho Selkirks and relocating the trail and rehabilitating fragile meadows in the Pyramid-Ball Lakes area, also in the Selkirks. It's our pleasure to give something back to the land for which we are so fond.

Summary: Northern Idaho at its best.
Review: As I have completed approximately 30 out of the 100 hikes that are described in this book, I feel that it has been an excellent guide with only minor discrepencies. The accuracy of "100 Hikes" is difficult to match and one rarely finds the number of pictures that is offered. A definite must for anyone planning to hike in the inland northwest.

Summary: Once a good source of information, now out of date
Review: I anticipated the book being about hikes in the Eastern Washington area. The book however covers not only Eastern Washington but also delves into Montana, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia. That isn't an inherantly bad thing, but if you're looking specifically for Eastern Washington hikes this might not be the tome to purchase.

Summary: Top Guide for Spokane Area
Review: I have used this guide book for several years and it is the best for the Spokane area. The hikes and backpacks are described accurately with respect to difficulty even if I don't seem to go as fast as the estimated time of travel. Especially helpful is the directions to the trailhead. I like the information on the status of the wilderness protection for each area. Good value.

Summary: Once a good source of information, now out of date
Review: This book is a once noble effort that is now in dire need of an update. The Mountaineers '100 Hikes' series is usually a good bet for information in the NW USA, but in this case you'll have to do your own sniffing around to get up to date information. The book is useful, if only to give you some good ideas of the options available in this area.
