Summary: San Francisco native highly endorses this book
Review: After using many Lonely Planet guides abroad, I felt there must be some valuable information about my own city. I bought this book to have as a reference when I had friends visiting from out of town (especially if I needed to send them out on their own!) but have used it for so much more. The restaurant recommendations and even suggestions for sightseeing have surprised me and I have even learned a few things I didn't know. Perhaps it is so good because it was written by the Lonely Planet staff in Oakland (right across the Bay from SF)- these guys know their stuff! Well organized and thorough, I recommend this to natives and visitors alike.

Summary: Great book
Review: Being very disapointed about the Lonely Planet guide to my own city (Amsterdam) I was quite sceptical about this guide, but it's great. It has helped me find nice places, good food and has helped have a great week in San Francisco. I never use the hotel-information supplied by Lonely Planet, but the rest of the information was correct, and the hunderd of sidelines the writer takes make the book a joy, even now I am back home.

Summary: Joy to read
Review: I knew from films and tv that san fransisco is a nice place. The reason I bought the lonely planet book was to get more usefull info. Now that I read it I feel prepared for the trip I am going to take

Summary: Great Guide Book!
Review: I've used the Lonely Planet series for travel in other parts of the world and L.P. has yet to disappoint me. Their city specific books (like this one) are small, so it's easy to carry with you and the numerous maps in the back are very useful. Each map has the locations marked for all the places noted in the book as well. Unlike other popular travel books, L.P. provides pictures of some of the more popular things to see; I find this very convenient since a picture says a thousand words. The authors of this book are also all San Fran residents and/or natives which made me feel like I was truely getting the inside scoop of where to go and what to do.

Summary: Much Improved
Review: Richard Sterling takes over for the joyless Tom Downs in the new edition, and it shows. This was one of the Lonely Planet series' "lesser" guides until now--with skimpy descriptions, a writer who didn't seem to even like San Francisco, and uninspired entertainment/culture recommendations. All the more surprising considering the company's US offices are located in Oakland.

Thankfully, Sterling saves it this time around by re-writing much of the background information, and including interesting tidbits and personal stories with a genuine love for one of America's great cities.

Summary: Not the best if you're not into the gay scene
Review: Seems to concentrate heavily on the gay and lesbian aspects of SF. My wife and I found Eyewitness Travel Guides' San Francisco and Northern California to be much more useful for planning our trip there.

Summary: Great Edition
Review: The latest edition, the 4th, must have changed a bit from the one that a previous reviewer mentioned. This guide seemed to be pretty much focused on any traveller going to the area, and although there was a small section here and there about the gay and lesbian aspects of SF, it by no means seemed to be heavilly concetrating it. It gave a good prespective for any potential traveller looking to explore San Francisco.

Summary: Indispensable for anyone who loves San Fran!
Review: Two years ago, I visited SF for the first time, and I had the second edition of this book. Here we are two years later, and I recently bought the third, and most recent edition. Let me tell you: brilliant rewrite! This edition is even better written, and has better graphics and layout. The staff at Lonely Planet across the Bay in Oakland, sure do know their stuff. This book is for anyone that wants a concise, yet knowledgeable introduction to the history behind the City by the Bay, as well as good reviews on restaurants!
