Rating: Summary: Shorter by a third Review: I bought this last week after using the first edition on a previous trip. I was quite surprised to find it had been cut down by nearly 100 pages. This is now the slimmest guidebook for the area by far. Only five places to eat listed in Tulum, ten places to eat in Playa del Carmen, and only a few paragraphs on some of the Mayan sites. It's still probably more reliable than the other guidebooks for those on a budget, but don't get this expecting to find loads of in-depth information.Tim Leffel, author - The World's Cheapest Destinations
Rating: Summary: Good guide for those who like to travel off the beaten path! Review: If you are familiar with the Lonley Planet series you know what this book is about, and as with the other LP guides I found it very helpful during my trip. Lots of great info for the travler who likes to explore off the beaten path and the economy minded travler. Very helpful info concerning the ruin sites. Made my hole trip great! The only sad part was my visit to Playa Del Carmen. Last time I was there was over ten years ago when it was a small village with unpaved streets, now it has grown into a small version of Cancun. Oh! one other bit of advice, check out "A Tourist in the Yucatan" fun book!

Rating: Summary: helpful guide Review: This is a detailed well documented guide for a traveler to explore and better understand the region. The guide has a list of all cities in the region and can easily get the tourist acquainted with the area. The introduction to the cities begins with a historical background; has an orientation and information section; followed by the tours of the city; places to stay; restaurants and things to do. My stay in the region was predominantly in Playa del Carmen; which is less crowded than Cancun and has the same to offer. Its location is ideal as it is centrally located in proximity to Cozumel and all the Mayan sites in the region. During my stay it was a very helpful guide.

Rating: Summary: Lonley Planet Yucatan 2nd Ed Review: We are big fans of the first edition of this guide - and were anxious for the new version to become available - since many places in the Yucatan are changing vbery quickly. The 2nd edition is a major disappointment as instead of new information, it just looks like any out-of-date information was removed - nothing new added. This is especially disappointing since Playa del Carmen, and Tulum - two areas that were well written and useful in the earlier edition, are changing so much. I recommend getting the first edition if you can - it is much more comprehensive. This is the first Lonley Planet Guide we have even been disappointed with. I hope a new and better edition will come soon.
