Rating: Summary: Difficult to get the hang of Review: I was somewhat wary of buying this map without seeing a photo of how it works, and my fears were confirmed when I received it. Instead of folding out into a large square, it folds out to the sides. Folding out to the left of the guide booklet portion is the northern half of Rome, on the right is the southern half. This makes it difficult to get a really good sense of where things are in relation to each other. I think with a little practice I'll be able to read it, but it's not the best format for a map.
I also should have checked the copyright date. This map is from 2001. This means that not only are the restaurant and hotel reviews dated, but the prices are given in Lira. Now that everything has switched to the Euro, it is impossible to figure out which of the recommended hotels and restaurants are in your budget, making the recommendations fairly useless. I also happened to buy the Florence map, which is from 2002 and has prices in both Lira and Euros, so I can do a rough calculation based on the ratios given in the Florence map to get an approximate idea of the costs, but it's definitely not user friendly.
I definitely would *not* recommend buying this map until they put out a new edition that gives prices in Euros. Even then, take into account the difficulty of reading the strange map configuration. It would probably be better to buy a regular guidebook and a regular map and use the two together than to buy this map. It wasn't that expensive so I don't feel too bad, but I consider this wasted money. I will inevitably be buying a real map at some point.
Rating: Summary: Great Map Review: We bought this map and the "Eyewitness.." map of Rome. The "Let's Go.." was preferred by the group - more detail, easier to read. Both maps lack up-to-date info on the expanded metro, so be sure to get a paper map also when you arrive.
