Rating: Summary: One Story You Won't Likely Forget Review: After reading about the pall-bearer murder, I told all my friend about An Hour To Kill. It is one book which you won't likely forget. How could Ken Register play up to the victim's mother, knowing all the time what happened to her? Talking about the lowest of lows!! Ken should have received the death penalty for what he did to Crystal, Bonnie Faye Todd, and the Conway community. It wouldn't suprise me to hear he had killed once before. Nobody has that amount of rage. And what about those who believed he was innocent and blamed it all on the police?Sloppy police work, huh? I bet that's not what everyone is saying now they know he is the real murderer. Go out and buy this book. You won't be disappointed in the story, but you will hate Ken Register for what he's done.
Rating: Summary: A Spellbinding Novel Review: Normally I am a fiction reader, but promised a friend I would read this book. I am glad I did. Real life is truly stranger than fiction, as the murder of Crystal Todd demonstrates in this book. Ken Register was a monster conceived only out of the troubles of his past, but a lot more horrible than the made-up characters I so often read about. Hudson and Hills are very good writers. The book reads like a novel and has a very nice flow. Even though I am from up North, I sympathize with the small town of Conway for what they went through. It would be hard to believe one of your own committed such a murder. This book is a must read. DON'T MISS IT!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Yawn Review: Standard tale of an adolescent boy carrying a lot of rage and an overweening sense of privilege and the girl who one night said no -- a newspaper article unnecessarily extended to book length. Nothing particularly fascinating in the story, investigation or the psychology of the boring, vicious little killer. Proof that murder stories can be as mundane as life in an American backwater town. Skip it.
Rating: Summary: Gripping tale of a sexual perversion crime, hate crime Review: A MUST HAVE for true crime buffs! This book keeps you enraptured from the first page to the last. Surprising testimony in one hearing makes no doubt in the reader's mind that this is the man who committed the crime. The gruesomeness of the crime is astonishing, and well-described in clinical terms -- but the emotional impact still comes out in the telling of the tale. The sickness of a man who seems like the boy next door is terrifying. These people could be your next-door neighbor. The writing in this book is brilliant, ripping at the reader's heartstrings. A special ending of the book satisfies readers' questions as to a theory as to the terror the victim endured. Of course, it's a guess, but the inclusion of it strengthens the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes true crime. Well-written, well-researched, leaving no stones unturned. It is a masterpiece! I am sure to be a fan of these authors!
Rating: Summary: Easy to read, super story. Review: Although I usually end up trashing some true crime books after the first few chapters, An Hour To Kill was so interesting I read it in two nights. Johnnie Kenneth Register II was a real sociopath, and no doubt would have killed again had he been found innocent. With the role DNA has played in solving a lot of crimes today, it is hard to conceive there was a time when people would doubt its conclusions. From what I learned, without the use of DNA, Register would have never been a suspect. I am just glad to know he was convicted and will never do any harm again. Hopefully, he will never see the light of day. GOOD BOOK!
Rating: Summary: Filled With Suspense and Drama Review: An Hour To Kill is not the average run-of-the-mill true crime book. Hudson and Hills do a bang up job in researching and reporting this horrible murder of 17-year-old Crystal Todd. I appreciated the way they told the story in an unbiased and nonprejudicial way, so the reader could see both sides of it and make up their own minds based soley on the evidence. My personal feeling is that Register is not only guilty as sin, but there is a lot more than will ever be known about his mother's part in the cover up of his crime. I am a mother, and if my son committed such a grotesque murder as this, I think I would know it, or at least be able to learn the truth from him. Good book, I am going to keep this one on my shelf to read again.
Rating: Summary: An Hour To Kill. A 5 star Performance Review: My first read from these two guys, Hudson and Hills, but it won't be my last. Ken Register was a snake in the grass, just waiting to strike upon some innocent victim like Crystal Todd. It is a good thing forensic science had advanced to the point in 1991 where it could identify Register's DNA, otherwise he would have no doubt murdered again. Detective Knowles and the Horry County Police Department should be commended for their persistence in getting the right guy. A former police officer myself, I know the heat a department can take from the community when a crime goes unsolved. I didn't take much stock in Register's supporters, why they even got involved in the case is a mystery to me. But there seems to always some "watchdog" in the community who know absolutely nothing about police work who want to tell us how to do our job. One look at Register's history and his two prior convictions of sexual perversion should have convinced them he was capable of doing something like this. The criminal profile of the murderer was akin to all the behavior characteristics found in Register. My guess is there will be even more to come out on his "dark" side, now that the book is out, than ever was told and revealed to the police and in court. Ken Register is where he should be and I hope he stays there for the rest of his life.
Rating: Summary: I Highly Recommend This Book Review: Wonderfully written and filled with suspense from the first to the last page. I wasn't for certain sure of the outcome of this case until the very last pages. The last chapter was packed with so much punch I will remember the Crystal Todd murder forever. It is unfortunate to know Ken Register could be so cold-blooded a killer at such a young age. I figured there was more going on in the family life which was made public or known to the police. A real tragedy composed by first rate authors. Hudson and Hills are on the top of my list of true crime authors.
Rating: Summary: Must read for true crime fans Review: I was so caught up in this book, I skipped class to finish it. Let me just say I am a psych major and it takes a lot for me to miss my classes. As a true crime fan, I have read many books by countless authors, such as Jack Olsen, Jerry Bledsoe, Ann Rule, etc. These two guys are right up at there the top with these. An Hour To Kill was a convincing case study as related to young men who become addicted to sex. Ken Register was a good example of an otherwise "boy-next-door" type of guy who was introduced to pornography at an early age and became addicted to it. Although I don't think Register, had he not gotten caught, would have followed the path of serial killer Ted Bundy, but he would have probably killed again to satisfy his sadistic nature. I recommend this book for any budding psychology student or reader who enjoys a good true crime story.
Rating: Summary: one of the best i have read Review: an hour to kill has it all: strong characters, a driven plot, an intense and suspenseful true story. the authors did a great job of weaving a masterful story while breaking with the normal journalistic style usually found in true crime stories. an hour to kill reads more like a novel. everyone who reads true crime will enjoy this book. my prediction is if hudson and hills continues writing true crime, they will be among the top authors of this genre. five stars goes to an hour to kill.
