Summary: Experiences of China
Review: I read the 1994 edition of the book. Cradock's work is essential reading for anyone whose work involves interacting with Chinese officials. Although much of his "experiences" were recollections of China in the 1960s and 1970s and also the negotiations over Hong Kong in the 1980s, many of the author's observations about the Chinese mindset still hold true today. The only drawback of the book is that Cradock tries rather hard to defend his government's management of the Hong Kong issue. Perhaps history will be the best judge on whether the British government had done enough for Hong Kong. All in all, this is a highly readable book which is both enlightening and entertaining.
