Summary: Well worth the wait.
Review: A Day Late and a Dollar Short is by far the best work by Terry McMillan in my opinion. Terry is like fine wine..she gets better with time.

Truly a master piece of work. Once I started reading (ADLAADS) I couldn't put the book down. The characters were so real. At first I was wondering about all the characters but soon everything came together and I couldn't close the book. The family tree was very helpful. Everyone that read this novel should be able to relate with the day to day drama of the Price family. Have you ever read a book and hated for it to end? That is how I felt when I closed the last page of (ADLAADS). I was like no...I want more. This is one that will have you laughing, crying, shacking your head and thinking about your own family.

Terry, please don't make us wait too long for your next release. God's Blessings.

Summary: A pleasure to read
Review: I enjoyed reading Terry McMillan's A Day Late and a Dollar Short. This book kept my attention. It didn't lose my interest or make my mind wonder off like some of the other books I have read. I do have to admit at the begining of the story; I had trouble keeping up with what character was who, but it didn't take me long to catch on.
I could relate to each character in this story. My favorite character in the book is Janelle, because she was the strongest in her own way, not the brightest but I admire her for how she deals with her situation. I wish, Terry McMillan could have added more drama with Janelle and her husband's relationship to spice this book up even more. My least favorite character was Charlotte, she was kind of nerve racking with her defensive attitude and childish ways. I took pleasure in Viola's character, she was sassy and smart, but I felt she did a little too much swearing.
The story line talks about how the Price family grew a part over the years with everybody living in separate cities and states. Their mother's only wish is to bring her family back together again and even her estrange husband Cecil. I love how the story goes into great detail about each character's personality, their situation and how they over come the obstacle life gives them.
This book is a delightful, soul-searching inspiration to me. It made me value my own family more. I really enjoyed reading, A Day Late and Dollar Short. I found myself picking this book up every chance I got. It was hard to put this book down. I found myself laughing and crying. Terry McMillan did it again with her contemporary African -American fiction. Everybody I know who has read this book said they enjoyed reading A Day Late and a Dollar Short. The Title tells it all. I give this book a thumb up.

Summary: YOU GO GIRL!!!
Review: Loved it!! Loved it!! Loved it!!! This book is a great family drama. I loved it!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Terry, do you know any of my family members girl?!!!
Review: This book was very well written and it was worth the wait! I love the characters Terry choose to use for this book. I almost thought she knew some of my family members for a minute.

Viola was the mother that told it like it was whether your feelings got hurt or not. (sounds like my grandma)Cecil was her husband who loved her dearly, but did not feel appreciated so he left and found him a young woman in the projects with kids! Lewis was the son who kept ending up in jail and every time according to him it was never his fault. Paris("Miss Perfect")and the favorite child according to everybody is always to everybody's rescue, but her own. I felt sorry for her at times because she kept her problems bottled up so she could help her siblings with theirs. Janelle the baby of the family had some serious issues in this book with her teenage daughter that will bring tears to your eyes. AND Charolette MY FAVORITE character who had nothing in common with her family, but blood. Charolette was just like her mom telling people off and not caring about their feelings. Charolette and her mom did not get along in my opinion because they were too much alike!!!

Terry, you did a wonderful job writing this book. I laughed and cried throughout this book. The only thing I did not like about this book is that it had to come to an end!!! Terry, PLEEEEEASE DON'T KEEP ME WAITNG TOO LONG FOR YOUR NEXT NOVEL! I would give you more than five stars for this book if I could. (**********)

I recommend this book to everyone you will not be disappointed!!!

Summary: Entertaining As Always
Review: Terry McMillan has managed to write another great entertaining read for all to enjoy. Terry has the skills! I really enjoyed this novel written from the 6 different viewpoints of Viola - the tell-it-like-it-is mother of the family; Cecil - the distant father of the family, who Viola pushed away a long time ago; Charlotte - the middle child who wants attention so bad, she chooses to act hateful and selfish toward everyone in her family to get it; Paris - the oldest and only child in the family to go to college who has money, but lacks other things in life and longs to be perfect; Janelle - the baby of the family who can be downright loony at times; and Lewis - the only son who is the typical "black sheep" of the family.

Although noone in the Price family is perfect, these characters eventually learn to put family first, and put aside their own selfish needs. What I enjoyed most about this story is that these characters grew throughout the story, and by the end, they all were much better people than they were at the beginning. Even though it takes a tragedy to bring this family together, they realized that family is always first.

Although there are many characters in this book, I can still see this becoming a movie. I am sure you will enjoy every bit of it as I did. There is quite a bit of blunt vulgarity (and the story would have been just as good without it), but if you manage to make it through that, you will have enjoyed another great read by Ms. Terry Mac.

Summary: Sorry Terry, not "A DAY LATE"-try right on time!
Review: A DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT introduces us to Viola and Cecil, an older, married couple on their way out. She is demanding and hard, while he is with a younger woman with three kids of her own. The children are just as wacked out. Paris can see nothing but her own success in front of her, while Charlotte resent her older sister's accomplishment. Lewis is book smart, but dumb in his choices concerning his life. Janelle is the baby of the family, and unfortunately, conducts her life as such. Not a wise thing to do while raising a pre-teen. The drama level is played to the hilt and the tensions run fast and furious, yet they sincerely care and love each other. Even if you can't relate to the situations they experience, there is still a factor there that you know someone that conducts themselves the same way these characters do! Sounds like the mark of a great book to me. Bravo, Terry!

Summary: It was about time!
Review: I love Terry McMillan! I have read Disappearing Acts, Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back. However, A Day Late and a Dollar Short, her new novel, is my favorite! McMillan is known for her great characterization -- the narrators' voices literally come out of the pages! She takes this to the next level with this new novel.

McMillan takes us on a journey in the lives of the Price family. Viola's struggle to keep her four children in order. Of course, they are all adults, but she can't help but worry. There's Paris, a divorcee who is always helping others. There's also Charlotte, the one with the teenage daughter from hell. And who can forget Lewis? He can never stay out of jail. I was introduced to each character as though I was having an actual conversation with them.

I cannot recommend this great novel enough. Terry McMillan is not just a great voice for African American women, but for women in general. I don't think I have to mention the legacy that Waiting to Exhale has left us! It was about time you wrote a new novel, Terry!

Summary: A very good come back to writing......
Review: First, I will start by saying that I read this book in 1 1/2 days... it was definitely a page turner.

Terry McMillan gets my vote for best come back... I thought that this book was much better than Stella ... more on a Waiting to Exhale level.

This is a book that all family can relate to. It is about a family and all of the many challenges and obstacles that they endured. Some would say a dysfunctional family... but we are all dysfuntional . . . . in my book.

Viola, is the mother and rock of the household. Recently separated from her husband of 20 some odd years, begins to take back her life and try to bring her family along with her. There is her son, whom, for everything under the sun, just can't get himself together.... he has been imprisoned, jobless, wifeless and just about anything else you can think of. There are two daughters, one is the successful wealthy single but addicted to prescription drugs daughter, and the other is the youngest jealous of big sister, married to an older man who is molesting her daughter.....

The story is a trip, but will keep you entertained.... You will be comparing your family to the books....

Summary: TOUCHING AND VERY WELL WRITTEN
Review: I loved this novel. Although I speak with my parents and sister quite frequently, it made me stop, pick up the phone, call them and tell them that I love them. This book makes you stop and think about those things that are truly important in life. I have read all of Ms. McMillan's novels and this is a much different novel than her others.

This story is about the Price family which consists of 3 daughters, a son, mother and father. Viola Price has spent her life raising her children to be the best they can be. Although each one of her children has their own particular issues, as a mother, she recognizes each ones special talents but more importantly, their special needs. As any mother, she worries about her grown children and hopes the best for them.

The novel opens with Viola in the ICU unit of the hospital after she has suffered an asthma attack. Her thoughts about her family and estranged husband provide the backdrop for the rest of the novel. As she approaches her 55th birthday, she vows not to allow her children to worry her into the grave and also vows to live her life and do the things that make her happy. To that end, she does make some changes in her life.

The story also focuses on her relationship with her children and their relationship with each other. Each child is different, each with his/her own dreams and needs. Lewis, the only boy is intellectually the smartest but is having difficulty finding his way. Paris, the oldest has everything money can by but has a void in her heart. Janelle, the follower, comes to a point where she is called upon to protect herself, stand up for herself and take some measure of control concerning those things which happen in her world. Finally, the most troubled of characters but most like her mother is Charlotte who is struggling to find her own special place within the family.

In the end, Ms. McMillan does an excellant job of making us all realize that we need to take the time and focus on what is really important so that we are not "A Day Late and a Dollar Short". Fantastic novel.
