Review: Adobe After Effects 6.0 Standard AAUG Review

I am reviewing Adobe After Effects 6.0 standard edition. This was my first time using Adobe After Effects and it took a while to get used to everything and know how to use the program and all; it is a very large program.

The program is mostly for motion graphics and visual effects for film, video, DVD and web. After Effects is a good program for easily animating text, still images, movies and more, using an unlimited number of layers and effects. Adobe After Effects is for fine-tuning your work of art, not a program to totally edit a movie right off your video camera. It's good for already- edited footage that needs some animation, out-of-this-world effects, or just some text. You can make many effects, including blur, liquify, magnify, emboss, perspective, sharpen, render, shatter and many more. There are 20 new effects added to this latest version (6.0), bringing it up to more than 100 effects in all. Since After Effects is made by Adobe, you can easily import files from other Adobe programs like Photoshop and Illustrator without changing the content in any way. It has a few features similar to Photoshop, like the liquify effect and color correction tools.

Let's say you had a movie already edited in iMovie and wanted to add some text that bounces onto the screen, does a little twirl, then slowly fades out. This program can do it in a pinch. Just look at the pictures from the back of the box, and you will see what cool things you can do with After Effects.

Like I said, Adobe After Effects is a big program and I did notice some other programs running a bit slower than normal when After Effects was in use on my iMac, but it was no big deal. It does have a lot of features and can do a whole bunch, so it is to be expected.

Since this was my first time using After Effects, I did have to read a little bit of the manual before using it. I also had to check back to the manual frequently when I was using the program. So for me there was a big learning curve, but people who have used past versions of After Effects will probably be able to jump right into this program and love it.

The installation process was straightforward and easy. There were no problems at all; I was using the program in less than 10 minutes. After Effects has a big user guide that comes with it (561 pages), telling you how to do almost everything. It also of course has online help just like Photoshop.

Adobe After Effects 6.0 Professional is available ... if you upgrade from the standard edition. It offers additional visual effects like bulge, advanced lightning, glow, time displacement and 26 others. Professional also has keying and matte tools, advanced warping and distortion tools, additional audio tools, 16-bit color support and a few other features for those who need that level of flexibility.
