Summary: Versatile, easy to use, and cost effective graphics editing
Review: I use Paint Shop Pro 7.0 nearly every day for business purposes. The screen capture functions, which allow you to do multiple captures of full window (with & without cursor), and screen sections using mouse click and drag or hot keys has been a lifesaver for obtaining program images for use in manuals and other documentation.

For editing and creating images from scratch, the interface is fairly intuitive and user-friendly (although the sheer number of buttons, toolbars, and submenus is a bit overwhelming at first) The online help system is excellent - much superior to many of those I've encountered in other paint and graphics utility software packages, and will get you started quickly. I especially like the ease with which image layers can be labeled, moved, and discarded in the PSP format.

The browse with Paint Shop Pro is a handy feature for anyone working with directories containing large amounts of images.

The animation shop allows you to easily build animated GIF files for websites, create screensavers, etc.

For the price, I haven't found anything comparable.

Summary: A low cost solution for Web Developers
Review: I am a professional web designer and have used the Paint Shop Pro line of products for the last six years of my life. I have found this program to be a quick and effective program for producing quality designs. Many people live and swear by Adobe Photoshop in the web design business, but the truth is there is very little that Photoshop can offer you over this product that you will ever use. Expensive software is never a substitution for effort and talent, and there are enough features in PSP7 that you may never discover them all.

The first thing you will notice about this program is that its very intuitive. In fact, the program controls a lot like any other Windows application (as opposed to Photoshop which handles similarly to a MacOS). You can drag and crop boxes as if you were selecting files in Windows. You can just right click and paste pictures from the clipboard with relative easy.

The program has all the essentials for complex web design - layers, a myriad of transparency effects, image splitters, filters, you name it.

If you're looking for a low cost solution and are thinking about getting in the web design business, don't let people talk you out of trying this program (that's right, its got a free 30 day trial version). You'll be glad you did. Still not convinced of the designing power of Paint Shop Pro? Check out some of the site designs that I did.

Summary: Great Graphics Software!
Review: I have both PSP 7 and Photoshop Elements and I far prefer PSP 7. However, both programs have their limitations, so I do occasionally switch back and forth between the two. I love to make banners in PSP. It's a piece of cake, especially after you figure out how to make your own tubes. Plus, PSP 7 comes with animation shop that alows you to make your own web animations. I have used Adobe Photoshop Deluxe as well (which they replaced with Photoshop Elements), but for making graphics and animations, PSP is far better. However, I do prefer Adobe Photoshop Deluxe (NOT Elements) for photo editing.

Summary: PAINT SHOP 7 A DREAM
Review: I HAVE NEVER HAD SO MUCH FUN ON THIS PROGRAM. NOR DID THE TIME FLY SO FAST. YOU'LL LOVE THE EFFECTS THAT YOU CAN DO WITH YOUR PHOTOS. THE PAINTINGS THAT YOU CAN MAKE, ARE BEAUTIFUL. I LOVED IT SO MUCH I JUST GOT THE NEW VERSION PAINT SHOP 8. YOU WON'T BE SORRY THAT YOU GOT THIS PRODUCT. ITS WORTH THE MONEY IN FUN ALONE. THANK YOU, BARBARA WARD

Summary: Amateur Photographer? Web Designer? Auctioneer?
Review: Then you need this program! Paint Shop Pro has been and continues to be one of the premier image editing packages out there. It's very simple to learn with an icon based or menu bar based format. All of the tools are right where you need them, neatly packaged and not too "overcomplex" like other, more expesive packages.

The budding amateur digital photographer will love the import feature for digital cameras. Just hook your camera up to your PC and download your images direct to PSP7! Or you can scan them in the same way!

The web designer will definitely find the multitude of special graphic effects like button maker, glowing edges or mosaic! Saves in JPG and GIF among a slew of other extensions! And it also has a built in watermarking feature to protect your images online!

Amazon auctioneer? What better program to prep the pictures of your items than this one? You just can't beat how quickly you can crop, brighten or a plethora of other features to make your items look great! I use it religously!

I can't say enough about this program. If you want a simple but powerful graphics program, this is it! If you want advertising agency type graphics, then perhaps one of the $600 suites would be your taste. But for the average every day person, this graphics progam just makes the grade!

Summary: It's always difficult within the software wars but....
Review: ...I have owned every PaintShop Pro since version 4.0 and I love it.

I have both Photoshop 6.0 and Illustrator 9.0, a web designer and I must say that I use my PaintShop Pro about 95% of the time. For the casual user or the experienced professional, PaintShop Pro offers features that are easy to use, learn and master. Virtually any plugin that is out there for Photoshop you can use in PaintShop Pro, it offers excellent vector graphics capabilities and for the price it blows Photoshop out of the water.

If you own a Mac and work in a professional graphics studio for print spend the money on Photoshop and Illustrator, if you are a web designer, a wanna-be web designer or an amateur digital maniac save your money and get PaintShop Pro and get a scanner or a digital camera with the savings.

Again I have all three including Micrografix Picture Publisher but PaintShop Pro is a must have for everyone, even those Photoshop gurus wanting to have an inexpensive program on their Windows based home computer. I have used it for printing on my HP Photosmart 1215 and it's turned out some beautiful photos and cards.

In short, PaintShop Pro is a small investment that turns out excellent results and most anyone can easily learn it. Go to their main website (JASC's site) and see the digital art people have created, some of it is incredible.

Summary: clunky and horrible to use
Review: I bought this as I have used the free version for years. The interface is so clunky, it's beyond even trying. There is no option for free hand drawing. And, it doens't remember which directories I've saved vs opened from. I find myself clicking so much between the 2 that I just hate it and it's time consuming. I actually reinstalled the free version and am using that again. Next time, I will buy something else! This was a HUGE waste of money!!!

Summary: Great program, great price
Review: I've been using various versions of Paint Shop Pro over the years and it just keeps getting better. While I mainly use it for photo-editing, it has a very good drawing program as well. There are many automatic special effects and all the tools you're used to in other programs. And of course, you can open and save/convert your graphics in just about any format.

There are a lot of built in features useful for web designers - image mapping, slice and dice, optimization, rollovers - and it includes JASC's animation workshop that has many automatic, if not old hat, features (scrolling, glow, etc...)

PSP has almost all of the features you find in PhotoShop, but it's much easier to use. I could never get used to the interface in PhotoShop. PSP is just more intuitive. You can also use most PhotoShop filters with this program.

The casual user looking for automatic photo-editing might find all the control this program gives you a little daunting. You just can't click a button and get rid of red eye, for example. What this is is a serious, feature filled alternative to PhotoShop at a fraction of the cost.

Summary: Amazing Graphics Program
Review: Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7.0 is really an essential for anyone interested in creating graphics quickly and easily. It is highly intuitive and it is possible to learn the whole program quickly (in a day or two), which is a lot less time than I spent learning Adobe! There is an animation shop that allows you to create different effects- rotate colors of a graphic, or apply streaming text to a graphic. In the main program, there are textures, multi-colored hues, and solid colors- as well as a wide variety of tools and some tubes (leaves, pinecones, confetti, etc)- to create with. There are effects that you can add- from pencil to glowing edges to rain drops etc. The reason I rated this program four stars: I think that a lot more tubes and effects could have been included for an even better product (thus saving me the time of finding them elsewhere) and I still need Adobe Photo Shop for the really crisp and *precise* photograph/artwork editing. As far as creating graphics- this program is wonderful for a product in its price range, and my top choice. For most, it would be more than enough I think. I really love it and wouldn't be without it.

Summary: Horrible Interface
Review: There's an old adage about software:

1. Cheap
2. Powerful
3. Easy to use

Pick any two. :-)

With PSP 7.0 you get 1 & 2. The interface is so clunky that I went quickly looking for something easier to use. Just trying to do something simple, like draw a button with some text on it, is very frustrating (I gave up after two hours). Trying to make a gif transparent is also baffling at times, meaning sometimes it works -- and sometimes it doesn't. And the 3rd party tutorials out there are of little help, at least the ones that I've seen.

PSP does pack some powerful features, however. And some of these are surprisingly easy to use, e.g., the Enhance Photo options. Rotating images is a snap to use too.

If you have a good PSP teacher standing by, this would be a great program to buy. But unless you've had some experience with other graphics programs you won't get very far on your own trying to learn this one.
