Description:

Berlitz is the recognized grandfather of foreign language learning, with a history going back 120 years. Berlitz claims 31 million people have successfully graduated from its courses, and there is no doubt that the layout and content of this CD-ROM will help students towards a decent standard of Spanish. One of the best reasons for learning Spanish is that it opens a door to an entire continent--Latin America--and this course is definitely a step in that direction.

As well as covering all the usual details of vocabulary and grammar units, the course has an online word bank of 12,500 words, and allows you to record your own voice and compare it to that of a native speaker, so that you can improve your pronunciation. The course is divided into 12 units, each one focusing on progressively more advanced elements of communication. This is a sensible layout, although it does sacrifice individuality for the sake of a coherent sense of progress through the language. People intending the course for use in Latin America should also note that the accents are Castilian, and thus very different to what they will find in the Americas. Nevertheless, the course is sensibly structured and easy to use, although students might want to compare its features with other Spanish learning programs first, in order to find the most appropriate program for their needs. --Toby Green
