Summary: Nice distro, good hardware support
Review: I moved to Mandrake from RedHat because Mandrake supported a device I had that RedHat did not. This is a nice distro for users new to Linux because it's fairly friendly to install and is one of the best at having built in support for newer hardware. Mandrake also has two community tech support lists that are very active, and their programmers participate regularly. The PowerPack has some nice extras to play with, like ViaVoice and Arkeia network backup software. It seems to install well on a variety of machines. I'm very pleased with its ease of installation and its performance.

Summary: If you think you want linux: read this
Review: I never got farther than the installation program. It made about 1.5 gigs on my computer unusable. I eventually stoped the installer because I had no idea what it was doing. Don't buy this unless you have a good lawyer...

Summary: Top of the Line security
Review: If you are reading this, you probably already know about Linux in general - its not for the average user, and not for games, etc. This release is one of the best Linux packs onthe market for real world servers, since it has a pre-configed security setting called 'paraniod' level security. It makes the machine rather useless for a desktop, but great for a server. It adds the wrappers for you, turns off all un-needed deamons, and makes a clean tight install. It can save you hours of work regarding security - this is one of the best picks for a Linux web server (if you dont use BSD). I give it a five star rating.

Summary: Mandrake is great!
Review: Linux-Mandrake has always satisfied me, and this version/distribution is even better than the old(er)/other ones. The automated installation process is a cinch; you don't even need to know anything about linux/unix to get it running somewhat decent, and when you do learn and get used to linux (and it's expert installation/configuration), you can re-install it for even better performance and flexibility. There're a lot of good applications that come with this distribution if you're using it as a workstation; although I'd recommend the "normal" (complete) version of Mandrake instead if you're using it as a server OS only, because you'll save yourself a bit of money. If anyone has any questions about this, you can feel free to e-mail me (admin@brien.com). Have fun!

Summary: Not a review, a warning...
Review: This is not a review of Mandrake 7.2, but a warning... The Macmillan Publishing version ... is actually the last Beta version of Mandrake 7.2, not the final product. One of the unpleasant side-effect is that it include KDE 2 Beta, while the final release of Mandrake 7.2 comes with KDE 2 Final...

The Mandrakesoft version is the "real" Mandrake 7.2 final, but i'm not sure if it is available in the USA...

Summary: Great Distro
Review: Yes, this is one of the easiest for 'newbies' but...it's not just for newbies. It's just as powerful as most any flavor of Linux, especially the deluxe version.

In response to the warning for Sebastien, don't worry.

Yes, it's true that it doesn't come with KDE2 final, in fact it doesn't come with KDE2 at all, but KDE 1.99. But, that's one of the things that makes this a great Linux distribution, MandrakeUpdate. Just go the the web site and MandrakeUpdate will automatically update your system to KDE2.
