Summary: Too Buggy. Going back to Norton
Review: ... Where do I begin?.....
OK:

First, (and most annoying), it totally destroys my web access on a daily basis. IE, Netscape, even Outlook are killed by some kind of bug in this software (possible glitch with the integrated firewall?). The funny thing is, I didn't even install the firewall portion. (I have a hardware firewall). In a nutshell, my browser goes haywire. If I don't lose access completely (to both the web and e-mail), I get misdirected all over the web, based on my history. For example: if I click to go to Google, I'll be re-directed to ESPN. Most times, the pages just refuse to load. However, I can ping and trace from a command prompt just fine. A reboot usually clears the problem, but it's still very annoying. I have never experienced anything like this until switching to PC-Cillin. My other computer, (on the same network and going through the same firewall), has no Internet access problems whatsoever. ...P>Another thing I noticed is that my computer takes much longer to start up and shutdown.

Last but not least, I don't see a significant improvement in resource use ...

Now, a review wouldn't be fair without at least touching upon the positives. Although I'm not crazy about the activation process (I'm just an activation hater, period), I do prefer PC-Cillin's update process .... PC-Cillin scans my computer in 5 minutes... However as good as these pluses are, they don't outweigh the negatives.

I noticed these same problems with the trial version, but excused them as possible side-effects of uninstalling ...without reformatting. (There were some troublesome ... files still lurking after the "uninstall" that were wreaking havoc until I manually uninstalled them) However, the full version was installed on a totally clean, newly-formatted drive, so there are no excuses. Disabling all real-time scanning tasks is not an option, because my computer is constantly exposed to disks from school, work, or wherever. I plan on just giving it away (probably to someone who ticked me off lately...

Summary: Excellent, simple, efficient, and quick.
Review: After a horrbile experiance with a certain other anti-virus software (lets call it McAfe VS 7.0) this is the complete opposite. Loading was fast, upgrading took only a few minutes. No CPU hogging, this is a true background scanner, no weird dial up issues either. Packaging is very environmentally friendly (not a huge box like in the picture above, more like McAfe VS 7.0's manual sized). Quick online registration, and a free chance at winning next years verision and upgrades. Thank you Trend Micro, if only more people left McAfe, or Nrtns and tried PC-cillin.

Summary: All it says it is and well worth the price
Review: After being attracted to the Home Edition of McAfee 7.0 by Rebates, I found my PC was really interfereed with rather than protected. It spent more time down or frozen than I'd care to admit. I was frustrated by the promise of McAfee's ease of installation and felt stuck with it.

However, I removed the McAfee and put in PC-cillin 2003. Installation is a breeze compared to the McAfee and the computer is running like a charm. This product does not interfere with anything on my WINDOWS 98 system, and works well with old fashioned my dial up connection.

It works quietly in the back ground without clogging up everything as the McAfee 7.0 did. After such frustration over the McAfee product, I must thank Trend Micro for saving my PC and restoring my faith that some companies really do care enough to make a decent product.

Summary: The Best Protection! No Problems!
Review: After McAfee destroyed my former computer, I purchased PC-cillen 2003 for my new Dell Desktop because my Sony Vaio laptop came with PC-cillen and worked beautifully. So I immediately removed the McAfee software that was on the new Dell Desktop that arrived in January 2003, replaced it with PC-cillen and have been extremely satisfied! Not one problem with this wonderful software. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT AS THE BEST VIRUS/SECURITY SOFTWARE AVAILABLE.

Summary: Simply the BEST...
Review: Ahh. Being a former McAfee user, and recent Norton Anti-Virus supporter, I couldn't handle it any longer. Norton and McAfee WERE both good products, but they've turned into companies out for money and could care less about the customer. I deleted my Norton Antivirus when it didn't detect 3 trojans and 3 viruses!!!! PC-Cillins web site did. When it detected them, I looked where they were located to verify this for myself and they were there... I left them on my computer to do a test... I scanned my PC with Norton's online scanner (which is supposed to be uptdated daily) and my Norton hardware. Both FAILED to detect this. One of the trojans was transmitting my web activities to some server!!! When I contacted Norton, they said 'We did delete it, but only part to make it inactive' Well, recording my web activity is not inactive.

This is a low memory consuming program allowing your optimum performance!!!!

PC-Cillin is the Best choice for the novice and experienced user. Your getting a superior product with daily updates and excellent customer service. If you have NAV or McAffee, you need to delete it now and get another virus software vendor. PC=Cillin is an excellent choice. PC-Cillin is proving to be NAV and McAfee's up and coming rival. That happens when you stop caring about customers, and your rivals start.

You can't go wrong with this product.!!

Beware of the horror review of NAV and Mcafee all over the net. NAV is a resource hog and they have less than adequate customer service (its almost not customer service, just make sure the customer has paid and we're happy and could care less service).
McAfee has bad service and is expensive as hell. After buying for 49.00 or downloading for the same price, you get charged another 39.00 for subcription service. Boo. But they do need money to advertise to fool more people into wasting their money on their product. PC-Cillin is my new choice, and I recommend it to anyone who want to safeguard their credit cards, and any information you have or have ever typed in your computor. Its all there... PC-Cillin protects you from it.

Oh yeah, PC-Cillin comes with a firewall. It blocks hackers from even knowing you're on the net. NAV offers one... for another 49.00. McAfee does too, for another 49.00. PC-Cillian's is included !!!

You cant go wrong with this program.

Summary: Great product
Review: I am a previous Norton user, and selected this product for my new computer based on reviews read on the internet. I have been completely happy with this product. I particularily like the feature of receiving notices that updates are available. One click, and my program is updated. Twice this week it stopped Sobig, one of the big viruses currently infecting computers nationwide, and automatically deleted the infected email. I purchased from amazon.com and was very pleased with the experience.

Summary: Know what you're doing!
Review: I bought PC-cillin 2003 largely based on the glowing reviews on this site. I had used Norton on Windows 2000 for almost 2 years but had recently upgraded to Windows XP and after reading the reviews of the latest Norton on this site I got scared off.

PC-cillin was shipped very quickly. My initial installation on Windows XP had a problem with running Update and generated a cryptic error code. I couldn't find any documentation about this error code. I assumed that I had to reboot (is this true?) and after I rebooted I got the same error. However, magically the product then started to connect and update without any intervention!! So you can imagine how pleased I was to be up and running.

Soon, however, when I used Windows Explorer to go to my downloads directory my machine froze with CPU at 99%. I killed Explorer and tried again - same thing! Well, since I knew it had to be PC-cillin because this had never happened before, I started to think about why this was happening. Then, while poking around in the configuration screens it occurred to me that my downloads directory contains a number of very large ZIP files. So I figured out that PC-cillin was opening up every ZIP file and then checking each file for viruses! So I used the configuration tools to disable checking of ZIP files and rebooted again. This worked! Now I am up and running and the product already caught 3 viruses trying to come in through Eudora mail.

The lesson learned is you have to be persistent and understand the principals behind the virus checking. That way, if you get a severe problem you at least have a clue what to do.

Summary: A reasonable product - but could be better...
Review: I bought PC-cillin 2003 to replace a McAfee product which was worse than useless (it took *forever* to initialise each time my Windows 2000 system was rebooted and locked up many processes while you were waiting for it to decide - after many minutes - to continue.) PC-cillin 2003 doesn't have that problem, at least. It appears to be quite a competent product and has a few features which may or may not be useful to you (my mid-level rating is partly because I will not need some of the included features.) Included among these are a personal firewall (I use the excellent free version of ZoneAlarm instead) and protection for WiFi setups (which I don't yet have) and PDAs (which I do).

Installation was touted as easy but in fact it caused confusion by taking *several minutes* to start the Windows Installer the first time I tried. After uninstalling and deleting the newly created directory (and two from previous trials of the product), it worked normally.

The program requires registration over the web before you can use the Intelligent Update feature - allowing you to download new virus-recognition (pattern) files and updates to the scanning engine. This registration process will also apparently *disable* multiple copies of PC-cillin: if, for example, you try and install it on two different machines using the same serial number. I can't confirm whether or not this is the case. Also, be advised that you should *disable* your existing firewall and browser pop-up killer *before* installing this product or it will fail to contact its remote server for program and pattern file updates and will also have trouble completing the registration process, as browser screens that it pops up will be suppressed. If you do make this mistake, the update screen of the program makes it look as if you still have a step to do to complete the registration when in fact it is already done. Confusing, and a sign of careless programming.

The auto-update feature also appears to have some bugs. On my system it successfully updated the pattern file but did not automatically update the engine to the latest version. Following the instructions on the Trend Micro website that supposedly tells you how to manually update the engine did not work either. Their technical support has not yet responded to my queries about this...

Overall this program is probably OK - I don't know how competently it detects and handles viruses as I haven't had one recently. It is way too expensive at its normal retail price, but the current rebate running (as of January 2003) puts it under ten bucks and therefore it becomes reasonable. However it has some confusing behaviour in some areas and ties you in to future expense with the yearly requirement to fork over more cash to keep the ability to download new pattern files and updates. If you are aware of the above issues and requirements, I can recommend it - but if what I describe above seems like too much hassle, steer clear.
