Summary: Comes the way I like it...
Review: I've tried them all... Red Hat, Mandrake, Slackware, Caldera, etc., etc. but the SuSE distribution has always worked the best for me... It comes configured the way I want Linux configured... I get Apache with PHP4 as a module for my web development, PostgreSQL and MySQL for databases, DHCP and Samba for running my network... plus, Gimp for editing images, CD Burners, Scanner software... basically everything I need... and it installs without a hitch... even the partitioning is handled smoothly... you gotta love Linux and SuSE's the best of the bunch...

Summary: SuSe is getting better and better all the time!!!
Review: If you are a newbie to Linux or a old seasoned pro then SuSe 7.3 will offer a lot to both of you. I been running SuSe on my system since 7.1 and I must say that these Germans really know how to engineer a good and stable Linux disrto. The install is easy as pie and the online update feature is as easy to use as M$'s update feature of course minus all the constant reboots. I would reccommend this distro to anyone looking for a alternative Nicro$oft's O$ and to people who have never tried a Linux OS before.

Here are my system specs:

Asus A7M & AMD 1.2 ghz CPU
512 DDR-RAM
LeadTek Geforce 2 GTS Pro
SoundBlaster Live X-Gamer ( with LiveDrive )
3COM Etherlink XL C905C-TX NIC
13.6gb Quantium FireBall XL HardDrive
60gb IBM DeskStar GXP HardDrive

P.S. I gave it a 4 because nothing in this world is perfect, but if Suse keeps working on their OS like they are now then it will eventually be as close to perfect as a OS can get.

Summary: Good Choice
Review: If you want to really learn how computers work and/or be able to run a system that's stable and secure, Linux and its relatives (like BSD) are the top choices currently available.

SuSE in particular is known for providing excellent documentation, lots of variety in software, and striking a decent balance between ease of use and configurability.

Personally, just knowing that my programs aren't secretly sending information about me back to their home base is more than worth needing to take a little more time to understand how the system works.

Summary: The best Linux Distribution Out there Now
Review: In the world of Linux, one can get very confused by all of the distributions that exist out there. In the world of commercial linux distributions. SuSE linux stannds out as the most comprehensive distribution with the most software and for a reasonable price. SuSE linux were the very first commercial distribution to ship with a "personal firewall" something that's now being implemented in other linux distros and even windows XP. SuSE linux is very user friendly but without compromising the power of linux. The KDE 2.2 interface is awesome and Yast2 makes administration a breeze (something like this is now being implemented in XP's control center, i believe). The choice of Graphical User interfaces is enormous and the choice of journaling filesystems is a plus also. I give them the highest mark possible for quality (as opposed to many other linux distributions that I've tried). SuSE linux is definitely a quality product.

Summary: SuSE is for me...
Review: Like many others out there, I got on the Linux bandwagon to expand my knowledge and skills in the area of alternative OSes. I have tried 7 different flavors of Linux, and have landed in SuSEville. SuSE for me, is easier to use, comes with better documentation (some flavors come with virtually no documentation). But most of all, it conquers Windows 2000 Server in almost all respects. Squid (the equivalent of Proxy Server) is relatively easy to set up, and comes for free with the distribution. This will save the saavy administrator over $1000.00. Samba (which allows connectivity to Windows boxes) is also included and is easier than ever to set up with SWAT (html based configuration).

To top this all off, I have a powerhouse SuSE server, serving 7 workstations with Squid, File and Print services, and IP routing running on a Pentium 75, with 64 meg of RAM with a 2.0 Gig hard drive. This is not possible with Microsoft 2000. Linux is stable and runs well on older, slower hardware. This saves a lot of money. 7.3 also incorporates Soft-RAID technology (new in Windows 2000). This allows you to run fault tolerance in Linux without the expensive supporting hardware.

I've worked with Red Hat, Debian, Caldera, Mandrake and a few others. But since SuSE came out with version 7.1 and later, I've had few problems (most from lack of knowledge) and SuSE has been stable enough for me to recommend it to friends and customers. To top it all off, I love the games included with this version of my favorite Linux!

Summary: Great Distibution
Review: SuSE has again impressed me. Solid distribution that is well-featured. Straightforward to install, setup, and update. I would recommend it. I consider SuSE excellent "Bang for the Buck" as OS's go.

Summary: SuSE 7.3 Professional - an excellent distribution
Review: This is one great distribution and most likely the best buy for me this
year, very nice surprise. Expected a solid system after previous experience
with SuSE products, but this one exceeds my expectations a lot.

I already own boxed versions of 6.4 /which I used as a router-firewall for cable
connection before I purchased a real router/ and liked it, and 7.0 Pro
which I didn't like /maybe because too much beta, unfinished stuff?/ Both
included great documentation and loads of applications; the new 7.3 isn't
exception. There are 7CD-ROM's (and 1 DVD if you own DVD player) plus 5 nice
manuals included, with lots of useful info inside. I always used to like SuSE
printed manuals, tons of knowledge , and explained in fairly good style. The
installation itself /I picked the "Default with StarOffice"/ took about 30
minutes and configured most of hardware correctly /with exception of older ISA
modem, which I didn't expect to be set easily anyway - did it later manually with isapnp tools/.
So in half an hour I had system configured with network, printer & ready to use. I run install in
graphical mode and without a glitch.

Default configuration installs most common packages, I'm adding new stuff
slowly only when I need them. The packages are managed best by Yast2
configuration tool (with dependency check), very easy to use, there is older the Yast available as
well. There are so many features in this release that it's difficult to name
them all, so just a few:

1) YOU /YastOnlineUpdate/ - unlimited update tool in style of Windows Update, but no
reboots necessary
2) many various file system, incl.Ext2 & 3, jfs, ReiserFS, crypto file system
3)2 firewalls /easy to use "Personal" and advanced "SuSE firewall"/
4)KDE 2.2.1 desktop environment /stable with tons of features/
5)according to box SuSE includes 2300+ application; believe
6)XFree 4.1.0 & Sax2
...and much more.

Most important thing: everything works; fast and smooth, no lockup, no errors.
I really didn't have any problems which would require reboot, and do have the first original
installation running. Biggest problem I encountered was a partially locked up X server;
just restarted X...also, while compiling something,I run into missing libraries/errors; but this could be
just my relative inexperience; bet skilled user would be able to fix that fast.
I trust SuSE7.3 so much that I use graphical login :)

I used to have always some kind of problems with Linux, but this version is fully
functional as a desktop OS /with capabilities of server or whatever else you wish/.
Full featured GUI, with command line power. Btw, the KDE2.2 GUI looks great and offers almost
unlimited customization.

There are certain areas which need improvement, for instance more drivers (only 1 out of my 2
digital cameras are supported),also the used videocard 3d glx support has problems in Xfree4,
but the overall level of support gets much better.

Needed some advice from SuSE tech. support; got helpful answers from knowledgeable people over e-mail.Took
a few days until first response, but afterwards the reply's were fast.

I would recommend SuSE 7.3Pro to everyone /as long as you don't mind to learn stuff/; Windows is
of course much easier to use, but offers less as well, definitely when installed out of the box .

I'm only moderately skilled Linux user, so I may missed some problems other people would point out.But
personally I'm very satisfied. I don't want to go into more details, there are some good reviews around the
Internet with full depth. This is just my experience after about 3 weeks of use of this OS.
Very impressive package, love it! I use normally Win2k, but SuSE is nice alternative.

I attempted the FTP installation first and it failed repeatedly, reason unknown to me. /did it successfully before with SuSE 7.2/.
Still, for the price paid it's a total bargain. I'm going to buy next SuSE as well; this company deserves support.

The system info:

Intel Celeron 466 - Abit BM6 /BX chipset/
256MB PC-100 RAM /generic/
15GB Maxtor ATA-100 HDD on MB's UDMA33 controller (needs upgrade here)
ATI Rage Fury Pro 32MB AGP /Rage 128 Pro chipset; "Rage128PF" in SuSE HW database/; installed originally with ATI Xpert98 PCI /Rage XL chipset/
ADI 1816 ISA SB-compatible sound card
3COM 905 TX PCI NIC /network configured with DHCP running on router/
Diamond SupraExpress 336i ISA modem /not configured or recognized during install; configured later successfully/
TEAC 32x IDE CD-ROM
MS Wheel Mouse PS2
SONY Multiscan17sfII 17" monitor
HP DeskJet 932C printer /used parallel port/
Epson Photo PC650 digital camera /used ttyS0 port/

This system is not really too slow, but I wouldn't try to put SuSE 7.3 on anything much slower if planning
to use GUI in full; had 7.2 on P200MMX/128MB RAM and it crawls. Command line only system works fine on anything I believe...

Summary: Does it all
Review: This is the only package you need to become instantly productive with linux. It includes a complete office suite (Star Office 5.2) plus the new Koffice suite and Abiword all of which can read and write MS Word and other MS Office file formats. You also get real player 8, Adobe Acrobat, Netscape 6, graphics and photo editors, email and scheduling software, cd writing software, plus some cool games. The setup is really easy and it can coexist with all versions of Windows. It also has built-in journaling file systems so power failures won't damage your harddrive, and it has strong encryption which you can enable for your file system to secure you data. Enable it with a checkbox during install.

As for upkeep, SuSE Online Update works from your desktop. It will update your system over the Internet and is as easy as Windows Update. You can run this periodically to download security and program updates or you can use it to update your entire system for free when the next version of SuSE Linux is released. It couldn't be simpler.

The box contains 7 cd's and 1 dvd. The dvd install is awesome because you never have to swap cd's. When you use the "add and remove software" module, it can find any software you need on the dvd. With the dvd, I've never had to use the cd's. I've used all the leading distros. SuSE is the most complete and the documentation is the best. You can't go wrong with this one.

Summary: SuSE 7.3, you'll never use Red Hat or Mandrake again.
Review: Very easy install, I've tried Mandrake and Red Hat after trying early SuSE distro's of linux and have come back to SuSE everytime.
Problems I've had are very minor, xscreensaver has a flakey config. Auto power-down of the monitor doesn't seem to work.
The software itself is very stable and refined. All the packages included here would cost around $...dollars to get a windows machine with similar software.
