Summary: Fun for part time players, but still needs improvement.
Review: Keep in mind that this game is still in its infancy. EQ, UO, and many others have had years to put out expansions and such. Even so, there are certain aspects of the game that are worlds beyond other MMORPGS out there. Here's some detail, coming from a MMORPG newbie:

The Bad:
- As many have said, no capes! Bah!
- Repetition: I'm at level 7, and I'm beginning to see this repetition. There needs to be a much more diverse group of enemies. I'd also like to see more instances of "bosses" and such earlier in the game. At this point, you don't see much of the backstory behind the crime organizations.
- * Lack of "Community": Permanent areas to gather and create community are sorely lacking. Don't expect any "taverns" a la D&D here. There needs to be locations where the superheroes can go to "unwind" together and role play. Teams provide PvE community, but they are fluid, and don't last as a team. Just when you've got a great team together, you, or others on the team have to head out. Breaks up the rhythm.
- Lack of lairs/hideouts: Every superhero needs a hideout! Where would Batman be without the cave? Superman without the Fortress of Solitude? I assume this will come soon, but it's needed now. Lairs allow people to create their permanent location within the game.
- Too focused on leveling: I'd love to see more role playing, but everything is geared towards leveling and fighting. There's SO much more opportunity to RP with superheroes than you see in the game.
- Mostly young crowd: Although I have no facts on who's what age, most of the people seem younger based on their behavior and communication. I suppose the genre caters to that, though.

The Good Stuff:
- AMAZING character creation: This is usually so lacking in other MMORPGS, but you have almost endless options here. I rarely see two similar chars. You can have 8 characters per shard!
- Fun abilities: Flying, energy blasts, etc. Good stuff.
- Graphics are worlds beyond many other games. EQ doesn't even compare.
- Movement is dynamic: Jumping, flying, etc.
- Very little lag: Perhaps a function of it being a new game, but I rarely encounter any.
- Functional and modern controls: Very easy to figure out what everything does on your screen. Very clean and modern.
- Good teaming: Create "amateur" teams, join Superhero Teams, or buddy with a mentor once you've reached L10.

All in all, the setup is enjoyable for new people breaking into the MMORPG world. I'd like to see NCSoft do some expansions (free?!) fairly quickly, though. While City of Villains looks great, I'm not going to get caught up in it: that's almost 9+ months away (2005 release). They need to work on some upgrades which will make things more enjoyable for everyone ASAP.

Review: Finally, one can have a pink mohawk, orange spandex, and a tail ... and not get laughed at (as far as you know!). I am a comic book fan and am familiar with MMORPG's and I have enjoyed this game completely!
I played a lot of Asheron's Call and Galaxies in the past and I had fun, but for me personally, I just didn't like the crafting and nonsense work. I already work 10 hrs a day and don't want to work another hour and a half when I get home! In City of Heroes, you just go out and take a bite outta crime! No messing around with surveying and scavenging, just plain old combat. It's easy to pop on for 30 minutes here and there for a little crime fighting.
Another thing I really like about City of Heroes is that I can still enjoy it on a 56k connection. Yes, I am still one of those puds on dial-up! When I installed games like AC and Galaxies, the update patches took in the 2-4 hour range ... ouch! City of Heroes took me a total of 20 minutes, that's from install to update to character creation. Surprisingly, in-game lag is not bad. I have had maybe two moments of frustration when I had to log off and back on, a lot less than in other MMORPG's.
The combat in the game is pretty cool! Mostly point and click style with strategy and the ability to run away if needed. You can chase down thugs or just stand around a corner and snipe them from a distance. It's fun moving from building top to building top ... yes you can jump in this game. One of my characters has come to the point where she can hover, which is pretty cool to survey the city or take some beam shots at unsuspecting criminals. I can't wait to fly ... up, up, and away!
Unlike some of the reviewers so far, I like the graphics in this game. I can't run under full graphics settings, but I am still able to see the details in the city and the colored blasts of my character's super powers. The city changes as a day goes by (light and dark). One thing I wish the game had was weather and its effects. It would be cool to break up a crime in a dark alley, while its raining cats and dogs!
Character creation is very detailed! You can create a female, male, or superhuge hero and then customize height and size within those three categories. The outfits choices are real meaty and in the end, chances are, no two heroes will look like one another. For me personally, it was finally an opportunity for me to create some of the RPG superheroes I had made in a dice game as a kid.
Anyways, I am really enjoying this game! Which is cool because after Galaxies (Star Wars is very loved in my house) I was ready to swear-off MMORPG's completely! I am glad that I gave-in and tried this one out. If you have never played a MMORPG and want to start, then this game is a good starter game. Easy combat system, easy chat system, and easy levelling system ... good for newbies!
Grab your pink spandex, paint your hair blue, and head to Paragon City to foil the plans of Dr. Killpatient ... we could always use more heroes!

Summary: City of Heroes not my thing
Review: If you dont like comic books you wont like this game. If you like good graphics you wont like this game. If you like quick servers you wont like this game. If you like making a character look like the tick or something like that. You still probably wont like this game.
Keeping with the fact that its the year 2004 i want something better than this junk. I came, i saw, i left thankfully and took as much money back from this game as i could get out of. If you buy by accident sell it. Sell it fast. Even distributors are agreeing about this and making special deals for you to get it. They're tring to get rid of this game.

Summary: WORLD OF WARCRAFT PLEASE COME OUT I BEG YOU
Review: This game will be destroyed once it comes out. Ive played this game and am not impressed. The graphics are so so and its hard for you to move around. The ability to fly is the reason it gets 1 star. If your smart youll kick back and watch some anime or even play old school eq. City of heroes just does'nt do it for me.

Summary: Things a like but mostly hate
Review: I didnt enjoy this game. This game gets 2 stars because 1. The character being unque is kinda cool. 2 Spells arent that great but you can make a lot of different combinations. After that i was not impressed with the graphics. The enemies are the same over and over. It like playing EQ and being stuck on the boat going back and forth. Or like fighting bunnies in FFXI who finds that fun. Give me a giant monster with stunning graphics and ill be happy but this game just doesnt do it...

Summary: NOT WORTH IT!!!!!
Review: This game is incredibly boring. The website is way to confusing. Your character creation is cool but for the price its not worth it.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Waste of money and time
Review: I have played this game and have a lvl 20 character. If i could,i would have never played this game. The only thing good about it is the fact that it character creation is unique. But other than that the missions are the same over and over. The customer service is messed up and there are to many forums. There website is also very bad and they will make you sign up for a million things before actually doing anything in the game... STAY AWAY FROM CITY OF HEROES... You'll thank me for it in the end...

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Terrible
Review: I agree with the previous reviewer that says the service is terrible. This game takes a top line computer or else it runs slow. Missions are the same over and over again. There is no customer service. My personal experience with this game was BAD BAD BAD...Wait for everquest 2 or world of warcraft NC soft = Bad games

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: The Service is the worst in the history of MMORPG
Review: The Gm's treated me with more disrespect then ever... The gameplay was slow and missions were boring and repetitive.. After the way i was treated in this game i never want to play another game from this company again...
There is never anything new going on and the servers are mostly laggy and slow... If your bugged your screwed because GM's will take a good 3 hours to get a hold of you...After that if they see any problems with your account theyll freeze you and make sure you cant move... Even if your in the middle of a timed mission...Service terrible if i could give this game negative stars i would...
