Summary: WARNING: Highly Addictive
Review: *** If you're not familiar with Counter-Strike... ***
In general terms, Tactical Ops is a first-person shooter with realism added into it. There are 2 opposing teams - Special forces and Terrorists. The player chooses one of the teams to play on. There are various weapons available: pistols, sub-machine guns, rifles, and grenades. These weapons are bought with money that is assigned to each player, which accumulates with more kills the player makes. The objective of the game is to eliminate the players on the opposing team by killing them or rescuing hostages. Unlike Doom, Quake or Duke Nukem 3D games, players do not respawn immediately after they die. They need to wait until the round ends - when one of the teams is eliminated. This game began as a mod (modification) of Unreal Tournament a few years ago and eventually became retail - following the footsteps of Counter-Strike, a Half-Life mod.

*** If you have already tried Counter-Strike... ***
Tactical Ops is very similar to CS (Counter-Strike). A major difference between the two, which may have caused many of the players to switch from CS to this game, is the dynamics. When someone shoots you in CS, you immediately slow down a lot - thus, giving that person a high advantage, and which usually means that whoever shoots first would normally get the kill. This is not true in Tactical Ops - your speed remains unchanged even when someone is shooting at you, making the game more fair. Also, the gameplay is a little faster, meaning that the walking speed is slightly faster compared to that of CS. In addition, the height of jumping is a bit higher in Tactical Ops. HE grenades are more realistic: maximum damage is instant death when the player gets too close to one when it explodes. Graphics are slightly more crisp in Tactical Ops than in CS. The substantial dynamics of this game have caused me to be entirely absorbed with this game.

*** If you're already playing Tactical Ops... ***
This retail version has a slight improvement in graphics - I personally think the graphics right now are superb already. More maps are included in this version. A few new weapons are out and new skins for some of the current weapons are revamped. New female skins for both Special Forces and Terrorists are available. Other new features may have also been included - check with the official Tactical Ops site. Gameplay should be identical to that of Version 2.2.

*** Conclusion ***
A very playable, absorbing, dynamic and stress-relieving game! Though unoriginal, this game is highly recommended for players that like first-person shooters. If you've got good skills/strategy/tactics in first-person shooting, then Tactical Ops is very adaptable, though new techniques such as timing grenade throwing, and learning to reload at the right times need to be learnt. A must-buy!

Summary: TO rules, excellent gameplay
Review: I have been playing TO for about a year and still do not tire of it!
You fight in two opposing teams, either as terrorists or special forces. You fight with realistic weapons such as the Heckler & Koch Mp5, a submachine gun, used by special forces all over the world or with various sniper rifles etc... The missions include classic hostage rescue and bomb scenarios or both.
TO has good, imaginative and really tactical maps and has been constantly improved.
It is somewhat similar to Counter Strike, it's main edge though, is that it is based on the UNREAL TOURNAMENT engine which although relying on your CPUs power runs smoother and faster than the Halflife engine (used for CounterStrike) does. In contrast to most new tactical shooters you do not need a state of the art PC to have fun. A PIII 500 Mhz and a Nvidia TNTII video card with 32MB RAM are pretty much sufficient.
Resulting from the various previous (and highly succesful) mods, there already is a huge and tight online community in place, where cheating is rare and beginners are usually welcome!
This game has in fact been an essential part of my life during the last months and I do not regret it. The 30 bucks are well spent!

Summary: Better than Counter-strike
Review: I heard of this game from "Computer Games" magazine. I thought at first that it would have the same playability as UT, but actually it remodels players, weapons, and just about everyhing except the sweet graphics and smooth gameplay. What's really amazing is playing over the internet...you will be connected in less than 10 seconds! Counter-strike took minutes and many server failures. this uses the UT engine, but with the new realistic damage, player, and weapon modifications you can barely tell. BUY THIS GAME OR DOWNLOAD IT!!!
