Summary: I can't complain
Review: After trying several free virus scan programs & firewalls, unsuccessfully, I finally made a modest investment in this bundle, and I'm glad I did. I had no problems registering both programs (separately of course). Installation was quick and easy and I immediately found 5 previously undetected worms in my machine, which were easily removed. Once you set a few rules, this software learns your behavior and knows what types of programs you do and don't want installed. The virus scan takes a while to run. But as a casual user, I interpret that as simply being thorough, and definitely effective. The only reason I didn't give this bundle 5 stares is because I've only had it 24 hours and only time will tell if I'm satisfied with McAfee's Customer Service. I'm happy so far.

Summary: THIS PROGRAM IS WORSE THAN A VIRUS
Review: BE CAREFULL WHEN YOU INSTALL THIS ON YOUR COMPUTER IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO REMOVE. IT WILL LOAD UP IN YOUR MEMORY AND THE FILES ARE WRITE PROTECTED - WINDOWS WILL NOT DELETE.

Summary: McAfee creates pop-up nightmare
Review: Be forewarned that once your year's worth of free updating of virus files expires, McAfee ironically begins popping up repeat windows warning you of impending expiration, and then expiration, and this continues and even presents multiple pop-ups during one session. I've written them repeatedly and you might as well contact the Great Wall. I hate to switch but any company that does that to a paid customer exhibits brazen insensitivity to the whole spam nightmare. They're not the same company I thought they were, apparently.

Summary: You do have options...
Review: Buy an inexpensive broadband router such as the D-Link DI-604 (this is your firewall) and a copy of PC-cillin from Trend Micro (this is your virus software) and you're good to go.

Summary: Crash, Crash, Crash
Review: Do not buy this product. I had the previous versions, and thought it was time to improve. All that improved was my ability to restore my system. Two of the files kept me crashing daily. After three attempts with customer service, I deleted Personal Firewall. I wish I had listened to a few other reviews!!

Summary: Problems and bad product support. Don't buy.
Review: First let me say that ordering through Amazon was fantastic. Product arrived quickly. Now about the product.
First I uninstalled an older version of Norton that was working fine and installed VirusScan 8.0 and Personal Firewall Plus 5.0.
It worked fine, even finding some spyware stuff on my computer.

About two week later it stopped working. YOU CAN NOT GET THIS SOFTWARE OFF OF YOUR COMPUTER!!!! Let me repeat, you can not get this thing off of your computer. I cannot get it reinstalled because there is an error with my Windows Installer according to the Mcafee 1-900 $2.95 a minute tech line.
You would think that at $2.95 a minute they would offer a complete solution to my problem instead of brushing me off and calling it a windows problem.

After reinstalling windows XP I still can't get it re-installed or removed. My old Norton will not install because it says there is antivirus software already on my computer. After 2 hours of research on the Mcafee website I found new instructions on how to remove the software. I followed them very carefully and still cannot get all the components off my pc.
Oh, let me remind you again, you cannot remove all the components of McAfee. I am not able to reinstall the product or install another antivirus program.

Does anyone have a solution? Email it to me at
tonycpa @ aol.com
Did you read the part of my review where I say you can't remove all the components of McAfee? Windows remove/add program does not delete all the files. Over the years I have installed, uninstalled, upgraded, added memory, hard drives, modems and many other computer componets. This is the worst uninstall process of any computer software that I have ever encountered. Spyware is easier to remove.

Buyer beware. This is my last purchase of any Mcafee product.

I'm guessing that this will cost me about $150 for a pro to fix my computer.

Summary: Hmmm..McAfee
Review: First off I was running a copy of McAfee VirusScan 6 w/Firewall 4 that came pre-installed on my new Dell. All was well for the first year until the 1yr DAT update subscription ran out. I found out that the VirusScan engine had now progressed to version 8. No big deal. I proceeded to download the updates (VScan/Firewall) online which was pretty painless. After upgrading I ran a virusscan and found lots of Adware! Not surprised! VirusScan gave me the option to delete/quarantine as it could not clean them. Word of advice. Don't delete, quarantine! Deleting hosed the LSP configuration on my system as removing adware apparently has a habit of doing! No LSP, no DHCP renewal (have broadband),hence no web access! Then you'll find out that McAfee offer free tech support via online chat room! No good for me as I lost web access! But the very polite customer service told me I can simply access their toll tech support for $2.95/min! Yeah right! McAfee's comment was 'All our competitors offer the same support' when I complained to customer service! I got the LSP layer fixed. Easy fix once you have access to the web (friends PC)! New software does run a lot slower. Older version I thought was more user friendly. And talk about McAfee trying to run the frighteners on you to buy the rest of their 'marketed' software! You don't need it! The McAfee is on a trial run! We'll see what happens!
For all you new buyers out there thinking about buying, look elsewhere!

Summary: Works Great on Windows XP
Review: Had been using online version that came with free trial on new
Dell PC. I'm running Windows XP Pro on a 2.6G Pentium 4 with
512Mbytes memory. Online version had worked cleanly for 90
days but thought McAfee wanted too much for subscription. Amazon
cost for bundle was half of my local stores and new subscription.
Removed old McAfee before install and installed both virus scan
and firewall from scratch. Registered on-line with McAfee.
Installation ran smoothly, no issues. Once running, updates
have auto-downloaded with no problem and firwall passes the
hackerwatch.org scans. Ran virus scan on my disk with no
problems. Have had no problems with hangs or reduced speed.
One final note, I'm using with modem and dial-up access only.

Summary: Novelll network user BEWARE
Review: I bought this bundle thinking it was going to work out. I put on my 98 windows machine and it totally trashed some of my programs. It slow my computer down and it would keep freezing my computer.

I got updated to a windows xp (With new computer, new network, etc,) thinking it would solve the problems since 98 was an older version. It installed great. No problems, it seemed to be working. Try to write to the server and nothing. My cyma software was not working properly, Couldn't save any kind of file to the server with either Word perfect 8 and 11. The tax programs would not download correctly and you couldn't update information from disks or cd to the tax programs.

The whole time we thought it was a NOVELL network problems and kept having the computer technitian calling up to find out what was going on.

After two months of frustration and trying everything under the sun, including disabling Mcafee, (which didn't seem to make a difference in the performance or the problems) we decided to try one more thing and once we took Mcafee complete out. EVERYTHING worked perfectly. NO problems what so ever.

If you use a novell network, STAY away from this product. It will act like everything is alright with your c: drive but behind the scenes it's messing with your server and other programs.

Summary: No problems
Review: I bought this program because I was having problems with Norton Anti-Virus. I had no problems with the installation. Once it was installed, it found several ad-ware viruses that Norton had missed. Since installation (about a 6-9 months now), my computer has not crashed or been infected by any viruses. I also have not had any problems with the bundled firewall program. I noticed people have had problems with the 2005 version. If I had to buy a different program, I would not use Norton, but would try PC-cillin. Instead of upgrading McAfee, I will just continue to subscribe for the virus uddates.
