Description:

While the CD continues to dominate the musical landscape, the relevance of vinyl LPs and 7-inch singles has hardly diminished for diehard collectors. With this reality in mind, Steinberg created Clean! Plus 2.0. With sonic filters like noise, hiss, pop, and crackle removal, you have the ability to clean up your dusty records. Additionally, Steinberg has designed an excellent phono preamp that cleanly boosts the signal from your turntable to your computer.

Clean! Plus installs smoothly, and the user interface is easy to navigate. The program can import all kinds of source material, including LPs, CDs, WAV and MP3 files, and any audio source that can plug into your PC's sound card is compatible.

Once the imported material shows up as a stereo waveform graphic, the fun and creativity begin. You'll find the same familiar control buttons--stop, play, rewind, and fast-forward--that are on your stereo components, and you can use these to shuttle the waveform back and forth. The real-time sound processors are straightforward and simple to use, plus they sound excellent.

Other great tools in Clean! Plus 2.0 include fade-in/out and cross-fade capabilities, a simple wave editor called WaveLab Lite (based upon Steinberg's award-winning WaveLab), and a very cool tool called the Surround Module. This consists of a circular window like a scope, with four speakers around a center image of a head--the listener. When you click and drag each of the speakers to new angles in relationship to the head this simulates a surround environment, and creates the perception of different listening spaces.

Audiophiles will fall in love with Clean! Plus 2.0, which is well worth the price. It's a wonderful tool to preserve and enhance our beloved music collections and bring all that music back into our CD players. --John Bosch
