Summary: McAfee's still in Business?
Review: I have used McAfee products for 4 yrs. w/out major problems. Then came along Virus Scan 6.0 / Firewall 3.0 The latest greatest from Mcafee, right? Not even, McAfee really blew it with the release of these two software packages. Their lack of quality control is unbeleivable. The problems I had installing these ranged from simple typo's in the autoexec.bat command line to registry errors(we know what that can do) to start up folder problems. And their tech support chat room, once you finally get in, is a joke. Needless to say, this software ... I have returned it and am seeking a full refund including cancelling my subscription to their "Clinic". If you want to try it out, be my guest, but be warned: be prepared for some major headaches. Also this is the first virus scan I've ever seen that would mysteriously shut itself off. How can I trust a virus scan that does that, among numerous other gliches? Not hardly.

Summary: Worst installation of any software I've encountered
Review: I have used McAfee's 4.x product for several years on my home Win98 PC and I did not run into any serious problems with it. I was forced to upgrade because pattern files were no longer available for that version. Against my better judgement, I decided I'd try a .0 version. What a mistake! In my 16 years as an IT professional, VirusScan 6.0 ranks as one of the worst installations processes I've encountered. It couldn't uninstall the previous version. I had to manually delete files from the earlier version and then edit the registry to remove the many vestiges of the application. When I finally got it installed, I was eager to get an updated engine and pattern files. All I had to do was register the software--no problem. Wrong again. I spent several hours with McAfee tech support and still couldn't register. Since the Internet registration wouldn't work from within the application, I used the form on their web site. That process did not do anything to update Instant Updater so it thought I still wasn't registered.

I still haven't been able to update my pattern files. From a review of McAfee's message boards, many people are experiencing many other problems so if I ever get it worked out, I have more bugs to look forward to.

The point of this story...run! Do not buy this product! If you're really committed to McAfee, maybe wait for version 6.1. But then again, maybe it's time to give Norton a try?

Summary: Fair protection, No support
Review: I realize customer support is not a profit-maker. So has McAfee. My system was down a week and once I had isolated Security Center as the problem, I wasn't able to speak to anyone whose first language was English. Morons with flow charts, a huge phone bill and I finally figured out (on my own) how to edit the registry additions. Spyware included but subtle.

Summary: Valuable money and time saving product!
Review: I've been using this product for almost ten years. I've tried many different products along the way, but always stayed with VirusScan. It pays for itself if it catches only one virus, but it detects all known and unknown viruses. The auto updating feature is flawless and requires very little effort to set up. Just turn it on and the dat files get updated weekly. The McAfee team is always on top of the latest threat with news, advice and updates.

A purchase you won't regret! Buy between 9/17 and 9/30 and you have nothing to lose, but the cost of a stamp. Unbeatable deal!!!

Summary: Money and time saving product!
Review: I've been using VirusScan for almost ten years. During that time I've tried others, but none ever compared. It would practically pay for itself by detecting one virus, but VirusScan detects all known and unknown viruses. Setting VirusScan to update automaticaly is a cinch. Just turn it on and it will be updated weekly from McAfee's own ftp site. The McAfee team is always at the forefront with breaking news on threat and advice.

Definitely a purchase you won't regret! If you order it between 9/17 and 9/30 you also get it at no risk for the cost of a postage stamp. Unbeatable deal...

Summary: Ok Product, but lots of problems
Review: Like many of the other reviewers, I have also had trouble with this product. I would only reccomend buying this product if you have lots of free time to figure out the bugs and other problems that come along with this software. Also the Firewall program isn't easy to configure at first. I still keep getting Rulaunch errors, even though I downloaded a patch to supposedly fix this problem. There technical support is a total joke. I had to search the web site several times before I found a solution on how to make my internet connection work, since the Firewall disabled my connection. The Firewall also slows down my internet connection. The instant updater is a pain and takes forever to get a update. The only good thing that I can say is that Viruscan seems to work when scanning my computer, but it takes forever. I'm very disapointed in McaFee because I had McaFee VirusScan 4.01 and never had trouble until I bought there upgrade. Next time I think that I will take a closer look at Norton.

Summary: Crashed Windows 98 SE; take your chances on a virus
Review: This software bites!! It crashed Windows 98 SE and I was unable to start-up. Only the fact that we have two PCs and I could access the Msoft site for help saved me. McAfee charges for live tech support even on day 1! Now they tell me (via chat) that the work-around is to edit my autoexec.bat file. Just what the average PC owner wants to do. ...
