Summary: Down Home Legend
Review: Okay folks, I live in the county where this movie takes place. The man is a legend here. And while the movie is entertaining at times, it is also an interesting mix of fact and myth about the famous law man. On the technical side, the movie was not shot here, either. It was shot a couple of counties away, which makes for a bit of an unrealistic protrayal if you are familiar with the area. But for the average viewer, this is Joe Don Baker (may he live forever because of his role in 'Mitchell') at his ignorant best.

Summary: Feeble
Review: The problem with me is that I think I'm just too dang Liberal for a movie like "Walking Tall." When Buford Pusser (Joe Don Baker) goes vigilante near the beginning of the film and starts hitting people with his big wooden stick, I feel like I'm the only guy in the audience that isn't cheering him on. For the most part, I found his character unlikable.
When "Walking Tall" was released however, it was a surprise hit. It ended up making over $40 million, which at the time was quite hefty. Rolling Stone called it the best movie of the year, and Joe Don Baker was voted by some magazines as one of the "Stars of the Future" (not for long however; he went on to star in uninspired drive-in fare like "Final Justice" and the infamous "Mitchell"). Later this year, a semi-remake of this movie starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will be unleashed upon cinema screens.
Despite not being my cup of hixploitation, "Walking Tall" deserves a better DVD than the one Rhino has put out. The full frame image is scratchy and soft, with some serious signs of compression and muted colours. The paper-thin sound is often hard to hear. There is not a single extra features, which is a pity, as even a short modern-day interview with Baker would be interesting.

Summary: Great action movie
Review: This is a great movie based on a real-life hero Buford Pusser. I would have given it 5 stars except for one BIG problem. The cameraman on this movie must have been drunk because the boom mike comes into the top of a few of the scenes. You would think with this being the digital age and all, that someone could digitally edit the mike out of the picture. Should a copy of the movie be released with the mike edited out, my rating will be 5 stars.

Summary: The big stick wins
Review: This is about as hard-hitting as it gets. Joe Don Baker (in his best role) is superb as Buford, and Elizabeth Hartman is also excellent. In fact, the entire cast does quite well. It may be a bit gory in places, but not gratuitously so; it just adds to the realism. Tough, but good.

Summary: A classic man`s man film !
Review: This is an exciting and entertaining film about a small town sheriff who sets out to wage war on corruption in his town. The best and saddest part of the film is when a carload of misguided rednecks with shotguns knock off Bufords ole lady, sending him into a rage of revenge. This film may not be factually accurate entirely, but its still worth watching and seeing the good guy sheriff exact retribution against the bad guys.As a matter of fact, seeing this film 25 years ago inspired me to start carrying a big stick of my own! I still have it behind the seat of my old ford pickup!

Summary: Big Man, Big Stick!!!
Review: This movie is certainly one of the bloodiest true stories ever filmed. Even though many of the scenes in the film are fictionalized for dramatic effect, there are many scenes in this film that did happen to Buford Pusser in real life and that is what makes so many scenes in the film shocking.

Joe Don Baker gives his best performance as Buford Pusser, a retired wrestler who after being brutally beaten in a local nightclub, exacts revenge on the very same people who did it. Pusser is arrested by the corrupt town sheriff and is taken to court for his actions. Thanks to a sympathetic jury, Pusser is rightly found not guilty and takes up his friend's plan to run for town sheriff against his wife's wishes.

While serving his term as sheriff, he is constantly followed, shot at, lied to, and eventually in one of the bloodiest scenes ever put on film, ambushed while driving with his wife, Pauline (played by Elizabeth Hartman). Pauline is brutally murdered and Buford Pusser is severely wounded when he is shot in the face several times with a machine gun.

Director Phil Karlson managed to make a terrific biographical action film with just one serious flaw. People who love spotting bloopers will find more than their fair share in this film. There are at least seven scenes in this movie where the boom mic comes into the frame or the shadow of the boom mic operator is seen along the wall.

If you can get by that, you will be left with a terrific movie.

Parents: Don't let children younger than 14 watch this film. There are numerous scenes of graphic, extreme violence (eg: Pusser's many beatings and gunfights) and coarse language.

Summary: Classic
Review: This movie was the highlight of Joe Don Baker's career, too bad he could not be in the sequels. Ex-Marine turned wrestler, turned sheriff, and loosely based on a true story. Buford Pusser fought corruption on all levels and eventually made some headway, this movie shows all of that and more. Joe Don was great in this movie and deserved a better career than what was thrown his way.

Summary: Excitement From Start To Finish!
Review: This was a movie that never had a dull moment. Joe Don Baker gives an outstanding performance as Sheriff Buford Pusser. Pusser
is a retired wrestler who returns home. He is savagely beaten by
local hoodlums. He creates his trademark,a big stick, and returns to the bar and gains revenge by beating the whole group senseless. He is arrested and put on trial where he is found not guilty. He decides to run for Sheriff and is elected. From here on it is nonstop action and violence. His wife is killed and he is badly shot up. He recovers and continues his crusade against the forces of evil. A very gripping film that you will not forget. This movie was a box office smash that literally swept the country. See this movie,it is great.
