Summary: The best movie about World War II
Review: This is the best movie ever made about a democratic society going to war against fascism.

The movie captures the fear and courage of American soldiers in war, fighting not to conquer like the Germans or destroy civilization like terrorists, but to defend their fellow man.

There's no sunshine patriotism in this movie. No flag waving or false heroics. But the lofty ideas behind the nation that made men such as these is there hidden like the sun behind fog and clouds. And at the end, the glory embodied in the men blazes true and shines as brightly as the sun when the weather lifts.

Summary: Battleground Review
Review: This movie depicts something we have lost in this country. The attitudes of the men who fought WWII have been blown away. The attitude the average American soldier had during WWII was the happy-go-lucky attitude that made the Americans so popular when they took towns in Europe. It is also the same attitude that made them charge machine guns. There are not many of them left. This movie shows that attitude perfectly.

Summary: One of the best
Review: War from the foxhole perspective. Excellent. You can
tell watching this film that ww2 was fresh in the minds
of its creators, not some long ago sentamentalized heroic
event. Modern film makers like speilberg should watch this
film and learn. The citizen soldier at its best. no heroics,
not a lot of action, but a lot of story and very well told.
skip all the new flashy ww2 movies and go straight to this one.
Don't expect John Wayne though, this is gritty, real, drama.

Summary: A terrific film!!!
Review: When I was a kid living on an army post in Europe, Battleground used to wander through whenever there was a lag in getting movies from the States. Goodness, my brother and I must have seen this 100 times and it still has so many memorable scenes and roles. James Whitmore was absolutely perfect as the machine gun toting sergent. Van Johnson was fine, George Murphy, John Hodiak, Ricardo Montabaln. A great cast. Favorite lines/scenes:

"Get a load of mama!"
"There is a boarding house far, far away..."
"The fight they put up was one for the books." (talking about the wounded fighting the attacking Germans)
"That's for sure, that's for dang sure."
"Texas leaguer, right over the 2nd baseman's head."
The ambush by the railroad tracks.
Whitmore seeing his shadow as the weather finally breaks.

It goes on and on. And great sets! It seems it was mostly filmed on a sound stage but the sets are very realistic.

Just perfect filmmaking.

Summary: Gritty and realistic film of the defence of Bastogne
Review: With the possible exception of one or two scenes, this film captures the essence of combat during the Battle of the Bulge. This was told to me by a dear friend who was there. It lacks the special effects of today's films such as Saving Private Ryan, but for my money, theres the attraction. The diologue is good and the characters are very well developed. James Whitmore was nominated for an Oscar! I don't know if he got it, but he should've! I watch this film periodically because it is a treasure!
