Summary: Comic strip Dick Tracy now on amazing WideScreen DVD!!
Review: Warren Beatty Produced, Directed and played the leading role in "Dick Tracy". A milestone Oscar Winning movie adapted from Chester Goulds 1930's comic strip of the same name.

This remastered WideScreen DVD delivers the goods in this fictional comic strip world scattered with numerous Big Star cameo roles hidden behind the Oscar Winning make-up. Beatty shot this movie in vivid primary comic strip colors. All sets & art designs(Oscar winning) plus the costumes were all beautifully bold & lavish.

Summary: Tracy (Beatty) crime fighter goes up against a barrel full of comic strip Baddies. Well disguised Cameo roles by big stars; Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Madonna, Dick Van Dyke, James Caan to name a few add to the genius of this film. Summary: Shame on Touchstone
Review: I gave this product only 2 stars. I have to explain. In this particular case I decided to rate the PRODUCT and NOT the film. The film certinaly deserves the "essential video" designation that AMAZON has bestowed on it. But gets my goat is how Touchstone (aka Disney) can release a film like this on DVD without even a hint of some behind the scenes footage/interviews, or even the trailer! And on top of that they are charging [too much] for it! There are dvd's out there that cost [less] that have better presentations than this!

Summary: Great Film! One of a kind!
Review: I first saw this movie when I was about six and have loved it ever since. Beatty took this tough project and turned it into a dazzeling and fun film. Lets face it, comic book films are not easy to make. Batman, Batman Returns, and this are the only three that I really love and admire. All the other Comic Book films failed one way or another. The performances in Dick Tracy are all first rate. Beatty is very good as the no-nonsense detective and Madonna is nothing short of amazing as Breathless Mahoney. Madonna took a role that could have easily been made into a cheap sleaze but instead molded Breathless into a deep, interesting character. Al Pacino is also wonderful as Big Boy Caprice. This is one of his best performances in a spectacular body of work. There is one other performance in this movie that is often overlooked which is that of Glenne Headly, who plays Tess in a way that not only shows vulnerability, but care and compassion as well. The set direction is wonderful and the storyline is quite good. Warren Beatty, congradulations for creating a movie that truly a joy. This film can not be missed. Rent it, buy it, love it!

Summary: COMIC STRIP COME TO LIFE
Review: Just finished buying the DVD of "Dick Tracy" and I must say that I loved it even more than when I saw it in a theatre. The colors are truly striking and I absolutely loved Madonna's "Monroesque" performance. She was wonderful in this but then Beatty has assembled quite a cast (although you can hardly recognize them under all the latex). One minor quibble about the DVD is that there are no extras but the movie looks and sounds fantastic. I recommend it highly.

Summary: Why NO widescreen for this dvd.
Review: Amazon.com has NO details for this or a half dozen or more Buena Vista movies released today on dvd but I have done some research & found that Dick Tracy & Turner & Hooch were released in full frame while 3 Men and a Baby & Ruthless People were put out in widescreen. Surely, all of these very recent releases were made in widescreen & does anyone know why they would not put out a ws dvd. According to imdb the region 2 release of DT & T&H in 1999 were in anamorphic widescreen. Anybody have any answers?

Summary: Comic Strip Come to Life.
Review: DICK TRACY is not a great movie. However, nor is it a bad movie. It's just a decent, good movie. It appeals most to boys, and is basically a toned down version of the of the blow-em-up cop movies of the modern era. Nevertheless, there is a romantic element that appeals to girls (besides the usual love story there's also Tess' tortured soul over her love for Tracy and a desire for a "normal" life; and there's also the love triangle with Breathless Mahoney).

The plot of the movie is fairly simple. Big Boy Caprice (Al Pacino) is slowly taking over the city, picking off rival crime bosses and forces others to join his gang. His only problem is that Dick Tracy (Warren Beatty) is always hot on his tale. Then a new villian, The Blank, arrives in town and makes a proposal that Big Boy can't refuse.

The costumes and scenery are bright and colorful and look like a Dick Tracy comic strip come to life. Beatty does a decent job at both acting and directing. His Tracy does seem a bit emotionless at times, but that's the way Tracy is: he's a perfect cop who shows hardly any emotion.

Madonna doesn't do too bad of a job as Breathless Mahoney. Her acting isn't nearly as bad as the critics complained. She had all the seductivity of Mahoney, but seemingly not enough of her intelligence (a flaw she corrected in EVITA).

Stephen Soundheim wrote the movie's songs and won an Oscar for one. The musical score was composed by Danny Elfman and is quite reminiscent of BATMAN (I kept waiting for the bat signal to come on because the score is so similar). Also, the makeup is fantastic (see how many Hollywood stars you can find behind the silicone and latex wonders).

Overall, though the movie is somewhat outlandish, it is stylish. DICK TRACY isn't a thinking movie, but it is an interesting one. It proves to be an enjoyable piece of mind candy that doesn't take too long to chew.

Summary: Inventive style and a lot of fun!
Review: I remember seeing Dick Tracy in the theatres years ago, thinking then how cool it looked onscreen. Being based on the comic strip, the producers and creative talents wanted it to LOOK like a comic strip come to life. They made it work, in spite of what the critics had to say about Madonna and Warren Beatty's performances. I think more press was given over to talk of their off-screen romance, than their on-screen performances.

Madonna really "vamped" it up as Breathless Mahoney, all curves and lots of blonde hair and those sultry gazes at Dick Tracy, of course played here by Warren Beatty. He does a great job, both as director AND actor. Whether you like Warren Beatty or not, you have to admit he can often direct and act in the same film and do it well.

Stephen Sondheim's songs were written especially to fit Madonna's vocal range, and she plays them for all their worth. I love the soundtrack--still playing it from time to time.

Milena Canonero, costume designer, did an amazing feat by using primary colors (green, red and yellow) to maximum effect in enhancing the comic-strip feel and look of the characters.

Every visual element of the movie, from the costumes to the cars to the set pieces, all gave DICK TRACY a 3-D kind of feeling, making it fun and exciting to experience on the big screen. ...

Summary: Why isn't this on DVD? HINT!!!!!
Review: This film is great. I wish it was on DVD. I love Warren Betty. He is an awesome director. Al Pacino brings his classic mobster act to the screen. Who better? This movie is set in the old style classic film making era. Get it. But anyway how can it not even be on VHS. It is on DVD in other countries.

Summary: Colorful Comic Caper Delivers
Review: DICK TRACY is one of the best comic book films ever. It adapted what was for many years a tired, one-note comic strip into a colorful, masterful, funny film. Much of this accomplishment goes to Warren Beatty as director and his entire production team who have created a believable primary color world where Tracy and the hideously physical villains can thrive. Yes, the viewers are thrust into the comic strip world for a couple of hours. True to this, most of the characters are very one dimensional, quite often based on their physical appearance. The only place where the story goes into a more complex area is in Tracy's relationship with Breathless Mahoney, (the passively powerful Madonna). In scenes with her, the color pallette is muted and Tracy reveals an inner conflict well beyond any comic strip characterization. Beatty is very able to carry that device through, both as director and performer. Other standouts in the film are William Forsythe as "Flattop", Mandy Patinkin as "88 Keys", Dustin Hoffman as "Mumbles" and the scene stealing Al Pacino as "Big Boy Caprice". The film is filled with great cameo roles totally adding to the enjoyment. The film is given a brilliant musical score by Danny Elfman (BATMAN, GOOD WILL HUNTING, PLANET OF THE APES), offering the final grace notes to Beatty's vision. Also of note are several songs written by American theatre composer Stephen Sondheim who has written some of his most melodic work ever for this film. He was even honered with an Academny Award. The songs are often used to cover brilliant visual montages that pepper throughout the film. The film was also acknowledged for the make-up which needs to be seen to be believed. The closing credits are as enjoyable as teh film as you discover who was under all those latex faces. In my opinion, this is one of Warren Beatty's best, most focused contributions to the film industry. My yellow fedora is off to Beatty and his crew...

Summary: A Great Film!
Review: This is a movie that can be watched with the entire family. Tracy is a great romodel and Madonna stays hot but not enough to give this film a PG-13. The violence is bloodless, and cartoonish. No nudity, rare profanity, and bloodless violence. For gosh sakes, at least rent it!
