Summary: ETMR - The Big Blue
Review: 1. Humanity: Many critics claim the central themes portrayed by the two male protagonists are the search for freedom and the proclamation of one's individuality. Yet both Jacques and Enzo are undeniably not free, having self-imposed chains tied both to the sea and their fantasies about the sea. In what ways does the film express the dangers of escapism and sentimental loneliness?

2. Implications: All three characters are tied to their worlds. Enzo is trapped in his status as the best, Johanna cannot move beyond her desire for a normal life with Jacques, and Jacques is unwilling to depart from the last words of his father. Do you think this film romanticizes these issues, or criticizes them?

3. Evolution: Besson (the director) stresses the super-human qualities of both men. Do you think these qualities are tied to their fate with the sea, or do they have a choice about their fate?

4. Realism: There is a magic realism in the film that cannot be ignored, form the magnetic pull of the ocean, to the unhuman mysteries beneath. Without these magical elements, does the movie stand on its own as a piece of reality?

5. Stageplay: Much of the acting in the film is overdramatized, from the sensual yet sentimental plumbings of Johana, the deaf silence from Jacques, to the heavy and bawdy nature of Enzo. Do the actors work together in a cohesive whole, or do they jarr the story and create separate entities upon themselves?

BIGGEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME

Summary: Good scenery..
Review: I don't know why everyone loved this movie so much. Yes, the scenery was great but I found the dialogue and performances to be absolutely terrible! I also have to agree with the reviewers who did not enjoy the music. Not having heard anything about this movie previous to watching I went in with an open mind and came out horrified (and bored).

Summary: A Haunting romance
Review: Luc Besson's the Big Blue may be my favourite movie ever. The Eric Serra music, as well as the gorgeous cinematography are fantastic. But it is the amazing acting of underrated actor Jean Marc Barr as Jacques Mayol, and his chemistry with Jean Reno and Rosanna Arquette that turned this movie in a phenomenon in th 80s. Indeed, in France, the Big Blue became an instant cult classic for a full generation turning Besson into a mega star. He went on becoming the European George Lucas, but the BIg Blue remains a unique and fascinating story. A must see and a timeless classic

Summary: One of my all time favorites...
Review: I first saw this movie when it came out in the theaters...I was around 11 and I loved it from the start and I still love it. I can watch it a hundred times (I probably have) and still watch it again! Now some of that can be from my crush on Jean Marc Barr and my liking Jean Reno a lot, but I think it's a sweet movie. Actually, one time I rented the movie on DVD and I noticed they had changed the ending....instead of a sad ending, they made it a happy ending.... I don't know which I like better....But that doesn't matter. It's a great movie and I highly recommend seeing it if you're into stuff like this. A sweet romantic movie.

Summary: A must see...
Review: This film is absolutely a must see for anyone who as an affinity for the water.

I first saw the American version of this film in the late '80s. During that time I was diving along the Pacific Coast of So. California almost everyday as a part of my career. Though the main character is a free diver, to this day I have never seen a movie that represented the underwater experience so well. I was visually astounded .

I am amazed that The Big Blue hasn't become a bigger cult hit. Anyone that I've ever spoken to, who has seen the film (and that is very few), was blown away.

I have watched for broadcasts of The Big Blue on cable for years and have never seen it. It's ashame that more people have not been exposed to this film.

I agree with some of the other reviewers about the music on the Director's Cut, however, just turn down the sound and I guarantee you will be visually mesmerized. Also, like other reviewers, I wish the American version was included on the DVD.

Again...for anyone who loves the water...this is a must see!!

Summary: MUSIC can make the movie....
Review: I originally saw the American release of this movie several years ago and it became one of my favorite movies. The Director's Cut restores some "holes" which were missing from the shortened American version, and this is a good thing. However, while the music in the Director's Cut (Eric Serra's score) is good, it is very 80s-ish and a bit overwhelming at times. I strongly preferred the timeless sounding music from the American version. I was such a big fan of this movie that I would have paid a little extra for both versions to be included in the packaging and am still hoping the American version will be released to us here in America, or at least the Bill Conti score on a CD, as it was quite good.

Summary: The journey to our antypodes !
Review: Besson made a very innovative , mesmerizing and overwhelming movie . This story begins with a tragedy which will sign the path of two brothers .
The sea as the perpetuum mobile , as the goddes to conquer every time you drown and remains in its inner , playing with it and seducing it , revealing its misteries and sublime beauty .
You will probably engage with this original and challenging proposal .
All the cast is superb . Reno and Mac Barr . And consider the intensity of acting given by Mac Barr that he was the starring of Zentropa , two years later as the candor northamerican citizen .
Reno is today one of the top versatile actors in the world and Arquette was very credible with her role .
Captivating and intriguing film from start to end .

Summary: Please put the Original US Version on DVD!!!
Review: Like many others who discovered this well overlooked film many years ago, I was greatly disappointed in the Director's Cut. For starters, the US Version's Music Score surpasses the European Score by leapyears and this Director's Cut uses that cheesy synthesizery European Score. :-( Secondly, the additional footage simply adds a little more pointless skin in the form of nudity, but adds little or nothing to the overall story except about 50 minutes of your time. It feels like it's dragging compared to the original US Version and often gives you more information than you wanted - sometimes it's best to not tell the audience everything and let them fill in the blanks themselves. The original US Version is one of my favorite films of all times, but this updated Director's Version doesn't make my cut because the extra stuff is pointless and long and the European Soundtrack is horrible!!!
