Summary: Forget the Title and Just Enjoy the Movie!!!!
Review: I knew nothing about this movie or the book that it's name is taken from when I watched it. I'm a big fan of both Morgan Freeman and Stockard Channing and that was all I needed to know. I found it charming and moving. Excellent casting and good performances by all characters. Having enjoyed the movie so much, I was anxious to read Defoe's novel of (basically) the same title. As a fan of classic literature, I enjoyed the book and could not see how the name had been lent to the movie. You cannot compare the two except for VERY MINOR similarities, so don't bother trying! I think this movie will be enjoyed by any fan of period films; any fan of the main stars; and any fan of a touching drama. If it didn't share the name of a great novel, it might have been well known as a great movie.

Summary: Where's Defoe's version?
Review: I liked the movie. Don't get me wrong. However, this version of Moll Flander's tale deviants so dramatically from the version written by Defoe in the 18th century. Instead of our heroine, his the early version being the victim of money's intense seduction, of trading her morality for money and compassion for commodification, Densham's version of Moll Flanders is a frosting-type Cinderella whose beauty and innocence give her her just reward, money. I'm not exactly sure what the director, screen writer is trying to say here. That virtue isn't it's own reward, but that with luck and good looks, eventually you'll get the cash you need to own a estate in the Bahamas?
Either way, the movie's romance hooked me. I love to see true love conquer all.
It was a good movie.
I just wouldn't try to watch it and compare it to Defoe's version.

Summary: The movie was tremendously moving
Review: I recommend this movie to anyone with a soft heartand compassionate mind. Wright and Freeman give powerful and solid performances. This movie brings to bare on the sorrows and hardshhips of life...a true tear-jerker. The movie adaptation and costume design are right on. I am surprised that I never heard about Moll Flanders coming to the theater.

Summary: If only it wasn't called "Moll Flanders" . . . .
Review: I remember when the ads for this movie were on TV. I wanted to see it because it looked like a strong woman, fighting against all odds to get by in the world. I then started to read all of the movie reviews that said how very little the movie resembled the book. I still wanted to see it, seeing how I never read the book anyway. I saw it, and it was a servicable movie. I liked most of the performances in the movie, but after the tape stopped, I didn't think another thing about it.

I then came across the Masterpiece Theater edition of Moll Flanders with Alex Kingston at the videostore one day. I remember reading about how much better this version than the movie version. So my sister and I sat down and started to watch it at 10:00 at night and didn't stop until it was finished at 2 in the morning. That version blew me away! I finally understood why everyone was in such an outrage about the movie. Moll Flanders was a baudy, lively soul who would do anything (or anyone) to survive a world that would see her destroyed. It was an extremely funny and yet very moving exploration of what it means to be hanging on the edge of total disaster. Do yourself a favor and rent the Masterpiece Theater version, even if you happened to like this version. It is well worth it.

Summary: Not Moll Flanders at all
Review: If you are a fan of period piece movies and only care about the movie, not the book, this is a nicely done period piece movie. It is nothing like the version of Moll Flanders starring Alex Kingston which I also liked very much. I have a huge collection of period piece movies and am glad I added both versions to my collection.

Summary: An exciting movie that will move you heart.
Review: It is a great movie to see if you love classics. The movie is not a "sappy love story". Actually it is quite the opposite. It is filled with great sceens. I would recommend it to anyone. *****

Summary: Wonderful! Wright, Channing, Freeman, and Fricker...superb!
Review: It makes me mad that this wonderful movie was realesed at the theaters at such a bad time. Many blockbuster films were out and this movie got put last at the box office. I saw a commerchage of it vagully...only once. I hope with my review Moll Flanders(the movie) will be recognized by more viewers...the book is sure popular. 100 reviews are for the book!

Summary: Moll Schmoll
Review: Moll Flanders is a noble, well-intentioned feminist parable set in the 18th century, and unlike most of the competition, it tries to take the high road. But that's a tall order when you realize it's actually based on Daniel Defoe's bawdy 1722 tome about the life and times of a woman forced to do all she can to escape poverty. As you can imagine, this includes things like selling her body, abandoning her numerous children, and stealing when necessary.

Moll Flanders has a lot going for it: sumptous sets, earnest acting (if weak accents), and a heart set firmly in the right place. But the mistake made by screenwriter and director Pen Densham can only be described as a fear of flesh and blood. Moll is one-dimensional--caring, sweet, emotionally innocent. Her journey to self-reliance feels unearned, and is predictable and emotionally unsatisfying.
