Summary: Great Movie.
Review: Expertly crafted action entertainment. Anthony Hopkins plays the aged California folk hero who trains Antonio Banderas to take up the sword against corrupt Spanish officials. Fantastic fencing, spectacular stunts, a good dose of comedy, and even some moving acting make this the best filmed incarnation yet of the Mexican masked man. So also get this film today!

Summary: Mask of Zorro (Superbit)
Review: I think this film is among my best purchases...Anthony Hopkins is fantastic, and Antonio Banderas isn't half bad either. The music is phenomenal, the camera work / picture quality is nearly perfect, and the story exceeds my expectations for an action/adventure movie.

Summary: Swashbuckling Action!!!
Review: From the very first scenes to the last, this film speaks to the legend of Zorro in a meaningful way. At first, the presence of Anthony Hopkins was confusing, and it appeared that he might be the villain, but when it is learned that he is the legend, and that Antonio Banderas has to spring him from jail because of the corrupt political system, this movie begins to jump.

It is a wonderful action-packed saga, and the scenes where the original Zorro (Hopkins) is training the new one (Banderas) are precious and revealing. Then of course there is the love interest, but I can't reveal much more.

Get this film and revel in it. If you liked the old Disney Zorro, you won't be disappointed here. There is no profanity, nudity, or sex, and you can see this with the family. A little violence with the sword play, but it is breathtaking. Recommended!!

Summary: Rousing swashbuckling tale
Review: This is not your Father's Zorro, and Antonio Banderas does a fine job as the masked avenger (and according to the Amazon.com trivia section, the first Hispanic to play this role). Banderas plays the second generation people's hero in Southern California, just prior to Spain's ceding of the land to Mexico.

Anthony Hopkins is a great second (who is actually the first) Zorro, a/k/a Don Diego de la Vega, a Mexican land baron and freedom fighter. After escaping decades later from prison, Hopkins escapes from prison to seek revenge on the no-good governor (well played by a smarmy Stuart Wilson) the man who killed his wife and stole his daughter.

Bandaras, a low-life bandito becomes urbane and a proficient warrior at the teaching of Hopkins, and then becomes transformed by a positively bewitching Catherine Zeta-Jones. Their interplay gives the film its romantic, and often sensual edge.

Lots of swordplay and general excitement, as we recall from Douglas Fairbanks and Disney's Guy Williams. The movie moves quickly (but bogs down for awhile 2/3 of the way through. Happily, it picks up the pace through the end.

Nice scenery. When we see the sign of the return of Zorro, via a blazing Z cut into a hillside , it is positively thrilling. A stirring script which fits the film well. More than enough humor (such as the scene in the confessional, or one of several chased of Zorro by the troops) for the purpose of lessening the tension which is well added by a malevolent Matt Letscher.

As one says, it is a grand throwback. As another said: That's entertainment!

Summary: This is Great Movie.......
Review: All the amazon reviewers have done a fastastic job covering the plot of this film it is hard to find anything new and different to add. But,this is a film that makes you want to call everyone you know and tell them to run out and rent it - immediately. And thus, makes me want to say something to encourage any hold-outs to see this movie - immediately! Honestly, it sat on my shelf for awhile before I viewed it because well..., its 'Zorro', a comicbook hero for goodness sake. Oh the pleasure I was keeping from myself in that delay!

Anthony Hopkins is great, as ever. As good as he has ever been in any film. Antonio Banderas has to be one of the most talented, all-around proficient, gorgeous and sexy, and easily the 'most-watchable' Hollywood actors working today. He does it all and does it unbelievably well. Catherine Zeta Jones is beautiful, intelligent, believable, and a joy to watch. Any questions one may have about the strength and weight of this film should be dispelled by the caliber of the cast.

The beauty of the locale, the costumes, the settings, the music, the colors and sound, all make it such a pleasure to view you feel almost overwhelmed by its granduer. The humor is subtle and delicious, appears in all the right places, and never, never insults your intelligence. Watching it, even alone, you will find yourself laughing with just totally sublime enjoyment. The sword-fighting scenes, such a favorite genre from my childhood, are beautifully choreographed and dazzling in their detail, the movement, the sound, the grace, all these elements come together with such excitement, they are a wonderful sight to behold. The Mask Of Zorro was a long time in the making and it shows in the detail and obvious love for the project that prevailed and transferred to the screen.

A word about which edition to select; the sound on the Special Edition DVD is just spectacular! So good I could not even consider suggesting one giving up all the interesting special features to purchase the 'Super Bit' Edition.

The commentaries and featurettes on the 'Special Edition' add such additional pleasure to your original enjoyment of the film itself. To learn the details of how the sword-fighting scenes were filmed, who did what and who was good at it, to know how the sets were built and the costumes designed, all the information about the local extras fill you with so much knowledge about the behind-the-scenes atmosphere of this film, it makes you value the spectacle of the film all the more. The next time you watch it will be even more enjoyable. And you will want to view it more than once, after you get it back from lending it to everyone you know of course.

This is an intelligent, but truly fun, movie that will definitely add a few hours of immense pleasure to your life. If I were selling this DVD it would come with a money-back guarantee. You WILL enjoy it. The only reason to return - is to buy a copy for your best friend. Share the glee. That was the only reason to write this review, hoping that one more very satisfied viewer could convince one more hold-out to 'indulge yourself' in this beautiful flick. It is Z-best!!!

Summary: High Quality DVD, Swashbuckling Fun....HALF the Price!
Review: This review refers to the Columbia TriStar DVD Dec 2000 release of "The Mask of Zorro"......

You're a big fan of this Zorro film but don't want to shell out big bucks? This DVD is for you. Columbia/TriStar's transfer to DVD is one of the best I've seen. There isn't one detail about it that's inferior. The picture is presented in beautiful anamorphic widescreen(2.35:1), and shows off the incredible cinematography of the Mexico/California regions. The colors are outstanding. They jump out at you and take your breath away. The sound including the wonderful score, the dialouge and all the swashbuckling action is outstanding in the Dolby Dgigtal 5.1(THX) surround. You can also set it up for 2.0 stereo if you choose. You won't find a ton a special features, but there is "making of" featurette, with some commentary by cast and crew, that is entertaining and informative. For those who would prefer more on the side of extras and don't mind paying more, there is a "special edition" release that has lots of goodies including a video, and lots of commentary(see buying info). There is also a "super-bit" version, also more expensive if you choose.(Don't look for extras there).

The movie is packed with action, adventure, romance, and comedy and drama. It will appeal to you if you love westerns, history, or swashbucklers. The story opens with Zorro(Anthony Hopkins)bounding in to help save the Mexican people from the ruthless Don Rafeal Montero(Stuart Wilson). They have been under Spanish rule and are now about to be free. Montero and Don Diego de la Vega/Zorro have been sworn enemies for years. Montero follows De La Vega back to his home, finds that he is Zorro, a swordfight ensues, Diego's wife is murdered, his baby girl stolen and he is imprisoned.Montero flees back to Spain and raises the child as his own.

Twenty years later........Diego learning of Montero's return, see's a chance to reclaim his daughter, Elena(the beautiful Catherine Zeta-Jones) and breaks out of prison. He now trains a younger and stronger man, Alejandro Murietta(Antonio Banderas), to take his place and to help save the people once again from the ruthless Montero.Lots of adventure abounds as they set out to accomplish these feats, and of course lots of romantic adventure as well between Alejandro and Elena. You never knew sword fighting was so much fun and so sexy until you see these two in a duel!

Hopkins is exquiste as the older Zorro, Banderas charming, funny, and handsome as ever, and Zeta-Jones in one of her earliest roles really shines through. Other notables to watch for are L.Q. Jones as "Three-Fingered Jack", and Pedro Armendariz Jr as Don Pedro. Cinematography by Phil Meheux(The Saint/Goldeneye)is outstanding, Musical score by James Horner brillant as always in giving the perfect feeling to the story, and wonderful direction by Martin Campbell(Vertical Limit/Goldeneye).

Watch for "The Sign of the Z"........Laurie

Summary: Was This Good Or What?!
Review: THe Mask of Zorro was cool and funny. i liked all the characters, especially Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. THis is only the second movie I've seen her in besides Entrapment (which was also good) but I really like her. She did great. Antonio Banderas has some funny Lines:
"Look at me. I look like a butterfly. This is the most stupid thing I have ever done."
ANthony Hopkins says "I doubt that."
I'm a horse lover, so Tornado and Alejandro's horse really added to the movie. Alejandro's horse's sense of humor was almost as good as the actors'. I've lost track of all the times I've seen it, but I enjoy it every time. No wonder everyone likes it.

Summary: Great fun for the family!
Review: This movie harkens back to the golden age of hollywood in the '30s with its bold stunts and cinematography. This version does true credit to the entire DVD medium experience. So gather everyone in the family around, grab you bowls of popcorn and soda and just sit back and enjoy!
