Rating: Summary: Can't Go Wrong Review: ....Fun, amazing claymation, REALLY FUNNY, and short enough that your kids will watch them. (If you have 2-4 year olds, you know what I mean) We bought them before we had kids and now everyone loves them. The fact that Gromit is the real star is an accomplishment I'd put up there with Hanks and CastAway: The dog never says a word (not to mention is really just clay...) and is the best character! You will be amazed at the skill and humor! Just buy it - it is grand fun for any age!
Rating: Summary: Beyond the genius Review: ...of Nick Park and the Aardman team, the technical aspects of this disk are something all DVD makers should aspire to. Without question, this disk - along with Shrek - have been the most creative use of the technology I've seen yet. And the stories don't bite one little bit.
Rating: Summary: hoorah for a grand day out Review: 1st. Dont class a grand day out to the other 2. When this came out it was groundbreaking in every way, nothing came close. Thats why the second was better, it was meant to be. 2nd. Buy this. Not only do my 2, 8 & 9 year olds watch this, they have worn out the tapes. They aren't boring, are truely English and you won't be disappointed. Better than anything Disney will ever put out.
Rating: Summary: Excellent trilogy, disappointing DVD Review: A claymation that both adults and children will love and I highly recommend it. However, I'm quite disappointed with the lack of extras in this DVD. First, you only get excerpts from a Behind-the-Scenes featurette. Why not the whole thing? Second, this film was made for commentary. Several scenes have you wondering how did they do that, how long did it take, etc. This makes the DVD not worth it if you already have them on another format.
Rating: Summary: Charming, funny and well scripted features. Review: A Grand Day Out is the first of the three videos in the Nick Park series. The plot revolves around Wallace and Gromit going to the moon to get some cheese -- cheese being a recurring theme throughout the series. Although the video was funny in its time, but pales in comparison to the more recent works. On its own, the video would rate three stars -- cute, but not something one would watch repeatedly. In The Wrong Trousers, Wallace has to take in a boarder because the cheese fund is a little low. The boarder, a penguin, has a sinister air about him, and subtly attempts to drive a wedge between Wallace and Gromit. When Wallace gives Gromit a pair of techno-trousers ("ex-NASA") for his birthday, the penguin sees the opportunity to further its nefarious scheme. Gromit discovers the true identity of the boarder and seeks to save Wallace from clay-hem. The chase scene is hilarious! On its own, the video would warrant five stars. A Close Shave is the third, and finest of the three. Wallace and Gromit are called to wash Gwendolyn's windows during a wool shortage. Wallace becomes smitten with Gwendolyn, especially when he discovers her father was an inventor. Romance could bloom, but Gwendolyns dog, Rex, has another agenda. When Gromit is framed for a crime he didn't commit (sheep killing), Wallace -- and a lot of sheep -- come to the rescue in a scene best described as a combination of James Bond, Jackie Chan and Lassie, all rolled into one. On its own, the video would be five stars. The videos do not contain any unsuitable language, but there is the cartoon- style, slapstick "violence." (It's very tame, however.) There are a lot of subtle things going on in the background, so adults will enjoy this as much as children.
Rating: Summary: Viewer from Atlanta Review: A superb, creative movie - a must have in anyone's collection.
Rating: Summary: Some of the best clay you'll ever see. Review: Aardman studios have been producing animated clay videos in Britain since the early 1970s. Over that period their reputation has steadily grown, financed by producing some excellent animated advertising for various clients. It is Nick Park's three Wallace and Gromit features though that put them on the world map, and justifiably so. In them, you can see the growth in ability and confidence of the producers. The first 'A Grand Day Out' is noticeably poorer animation quality compared with the other two. That is in no way a criticism but a natural result of the lower level of experience and lower budget they then had available. It doesn't detract from its entertainment value either, which is excellent. The relaxed humour and the extraordinary attention to detail of AGDO set the standard the following features, a standard they have constistantly raised. The speeds involved in the chase scenes from 'The Wrong Trousers' are amazing and are a match for anything that comes out of Hollywood. It seems almost impossible to believe that they were produced using 'stop motion' animation. I thought TWT would be nigh on impossible to match but 'A Close Shave' exceeded my expactations. The dialog, the storyline and the visual effects had me in absolute stitches the first time I saw it. In the UK these three features come on separate DVDs with no extras. In the US they are all on one DVD and with a host of extras to boot. You don't know how lucky you are! Buy it now.
Rating: Summary: Nick park's animation is second to none Review: After starting a few years a ago when I saw A Grand Day Out, I have had to see all ardman animation picyures they are simply the best at what they do. These are a must for any animation enthusiast.
Rating: Summary: Master of Stop-Motion Animation. Review: Ah, this DVD made me smile from the moment I started watching. I liked the charm of Chicken Run, but this is even better. Combination of oddball couple with English sense of humor, you will see why this short films won Oscar. Great, I am already waiting for Wallce and Gromit feature film due in 2005.
Rating: Summary: Best Claymation films ever! Review: All 3 of these videos are so funny and cute. I love the way Wallace and his dog gromit relate to each other. I would highly recommend them to all ages! Hilarious!!
