Summary: A Must-See for Booklovers
Review: Funny, intelligent, and ultimately rather sad. It is the only movie that successfully brings a tear to my eye every time I watch it.

Summary: a charming story of friendship and the love of books
Review: Helene Hanff's 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD is one of the few films I have watched many, many times and have never tired of its wonderful story, great acting and inspiring picture of a life-long friendship.

Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins are a perfect match for this timeless story that spans the literal breadth of the Atlantic Ocean and some 20 years in time. The supporting cast including the always-engaging Judy Dench, round out a superbly-written screenplay.

This film will make you laugh, and cry and sometimes both at the same time. It resonates so much with not only the joy of finding a great book, but also with the connections books bring to our daily lives, and those friendships that arise and/or continue over the lively discussions of a wonderful book you have shared with someone.

A wonderful movie to share with a fellow book lover, or just a good friend!

Summary: My two favorite passions are in this movie,Books and Writing
Review: I absolutely adore this film. I first saw it on HBO when I was in my late teens, I'm twenty-seven now. This movie is on my Top 5 favorite movies of all times list. Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft are brillant. The relationship they had was so great, not only with the exchange of books and money, but of food and kind words. I could watch this over and over again. It makes you wonder what ever happened to the art of letter writing, not with e-mail, but on paper.

Summary: For book lovers
Review: I adore this film. I discovered Helen Hanff's books only after I had seen this film. Both are treasures. Hanff's story tells of her long distance association with a London book shop that specializes in finding rare volumes at a reasonable price. Her correspondence with the shop's manager is the basis of the story. This is a love story - of sorts. These people all love books - not mass market knock-offs, but books rich in history and poetry. The trans-Atlantic relationship is brought off beautifully. Bancroft and Hopkins shine in their roles. The supporting characters (including Mercedes Ruehl and Judi Dench) are wonderfully understated. The screenplay by Hugh Whitemore captures the very essence of Hanff's memoir. If you adore books and fine films, do not miss this.

Summary: I found my movie which I can keep all my life.
Review: I am a book lover and a fan of Hopkins. When I saw the video introduction, I thought this might be a good movie, but after I watch this, I realized this is more than I anticipated. Idon't know much about the English book world (I am Japanese), and this movie told me many things about books.

Summary: One Of TheGood Ones
Review: I am an adventure movie fan. I love clashing swords and galloping horses. A dragon to be slain or a world to be saved just plain thrill me. My heroes have always been cowboys and knights and people who spit in the face of danger. So why am I writing a review of a movie like this? Well, don't tell any of my neighbors, but I's b sucker for a great "people movie" and this is one of the best I've seen in a long time. Anthony Hopkins isn't Hannibal and Ms bancroft isn't Mrs Robinson in this, and they , and everyone else in it, are GREAT!

Summary: Lovers of literature, books, and letters should see this!
Review: I first heard this story on book-on-tape. When I found out two of my favorite actors (Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft) starred in the movie, I had to watch it. And now this is one of my favorite movies of all time. I loved Helene's intelligent, ascerbic wit. Though the story comes with a heartbreaking ending, it left me feeling inspired and uplifted. Every romantic at heart should wish for a lifelong friendship like this. I highly recommend this to any lover of literature, books, and letters. I am eager to read the book version as well as other of Hanff's works now!

Summary: DVD is NOT letterboxed!
Review: I love this movie--it's one of my all-time favorites. Since the plot has been discussed in other reviews, I will only address the DVD quality in mine.

The only reason this movie does not get 5 stars is that it's not letterboxed. Full-frame movies on DVD are almost the exclusive domain of children's films, so why Columbia thought that the devoted fans of this movie would not want widescreen is beyond me. I have noticed on the web that this movie is in widescreen in England. What gives, Columbia? I have contacted Columbia by e-mail to express my displeasure and encourage the film's fans to do the same at sonypictures.com. Except for the chopped-off framing, the picture is very good: clear, sharp, and detailed with only very occasional and very minor artifacts. This is a wonderful picture and we're fortunate to have it on DVD since it was not a big money maker, but the studio needs to hear from us so they won't repeat such a stunt in the future.

Summary: 84 Charing Cross Road, Beautiful Movie
Review: I really enjoyed the movie, "84 Charing Cross Road", starring Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft, two great actors. I was interested to see these two keep up a correspondence of something like 25 years or so, and yet never meet. That was the sad part of the whole movie, the fact that the man dies before Helene ever has a chance of meeting him. Towards the end of this film, it starts to drag, but it leaves you with such a good feeling that somehow you can overlook this and remember the good moments, which there are plenty of.
