Summary: The Title Says It All
Review: This is a really fun movie that has lots of Bubba and not a little Ho-Tep. I found it very campy and some of it was surprisingly creepy. The scene where Elvis (Bruce Campbell) battles a giant scarab with a bedpan was a hoot.

I loved the premise that Elvis was just tired of all the hoorah in his life and wanted out, temporarily anyway. But things don't always go as we plan in life and Campbell is very good at portraying Elvis' bemusement with where he ends up - in a ramshackle nursing home in Texas.

Ossie Davis as JFK is just wonderful. His room at the nursing home looks as much like the Oval Office as possible, considering the circumstances.

This is a popcorn movie well worth seeing.

Summary: Better Luck Next time Bruce!!!
Review: This film's success solely rides on the cult of Bruce Campbell and some clever marketing. I was hyped to see it too as a fan of Bruce and taking a liking to the premise of the movie. Bruce sort of dropped off the radar after "Jack of All Trades" and we missed him and we all had a primal urge to see this movie. Is it dismal? No! But it should've been better! From the reviews here, it seems people mostly love it and I'm not sure why! It's not terribly funny, dramatic or scary in the least. Bruce's lovable charisma seems diminished by the make-up and his eyes seem dull and lost, not at all like the lively Bruce we enjoy so much or Elvis for that matter! Ossie Davis is amusing and puts in the films best performance. The Mummy(Bubba ho-tep) is horrible and lacks anything scary or even remotely threatening, which is a shame because a Mummy taking up some attitude with cowboy duds on is promising.
I guess the movie cost about 500,000 to 700,000 to make which is low low budget for sure but I think they could've gotten more for better effects (they are incredibly cheesey and not in a good way). They should've taken up donations from Bruce Campbell fans! I'm sure there's a couple million of us if not more! If we all donated a dollar we could've tripled the budget and gotten some real frights and giggles!
All this being said, the DVD redeems the movie some with the 2 commentary tracks, one with Bruce and the Director and one with Bruce pretending to be the real Elvis, which is funnier than the movie!
I think all involved meant well and had a good time making it. I'm glad it's still a success and Bruce Campbell's acting career is still on track. Don't retire on this one Bruce, please! Give us some sugar, Baby!!!!

Summary: Bruce Campbell¿s career just ended!
Review: Oh where to begin, first Id like to say I've actually talked to Bruce before, He's a very nice guy, and I must say sorry to him for what I'm about to say, which is THIS MOVIE IS TERRIBLE!!!!!!! (1) Who ever said that people who like army of darkness or evil dead would like this movie need their head handed to them! If you like Bruce's horror flicks, you WILL NOT like this movie!! (2) It is a snooze fest, beyond boring! Bruce, do you take any role you get these days? Its ok to turn one down now and then! (then again, I guess if the price was right Id do it too (3) beyond generic: ive seen better affects on Buffy the vampire slayer (4) it is NOT funny. Laughs are far apart, there is only 2 or 3 slight snickers in the whole movie, that's it! I have seen more humor in a Mr. Bean movie. (5) to clarify: one guy THINKS he is JFK, these people are portrayed as being crazy not the real deals, you dorks! (6) lack of gore, which kind of falls in the lack of action, and point 2 (7) if you like bad trailer trash movies, a hick, and find Elvis fart jokes funny, maybe then you would......NO actually you wouldn't like this either! (8) R.I.P Bruce Campbell

Summary: Better than a fried peanut butter and 'nanna sannich, Momma.
Review: This is more than a fun comedy/horror flick--it is a meditation on the death of American legends...about the disposable nature of our attitudes concerning the aged, and the redemption one can find in "Taking Care of Business." Bruce Campbell deserved an Academy Award nomination.

Better than a fried peanut butter and 'nanna sannich, Momma. I give it 4.5 stars out of 5.

Review: The Perfect DVD for the Perfect Movie. Bruce Campbell rocks as elvis!!

Summary: A redemptive Elvis tribute/horror/comedy
Review: The plot of Bubba HoTep hinges on an aging and infirm Elvis Presley (Bruce) and his insane rest home buddy JFK (Ossie Davis, who is unmistakably black by the way) discovering that an Egyptian mummy vampire has been feeding on the souls of the elderly in their area in order to stay undead. Since nobody will believe a couple of wacky old geezers with a story as incredible as this, they realize that it's up to them alone to put things right. The King is back folks, and he's gonna kick some behind!

But that's not what this film is really about. There is a more serious flip side to the campy surface story, and it's about regrets, nostalgia, and a wasted life. When the opening scene has a shot of Elvis lying sick in bed in a Texas rest home narrating his sad and thoughtful flashbacks, you know this is a uniquely dramatic take on what would otherwise be called a horror/comedy. Elvis had lived a pretty shallow life in his youth, then made some tragic mistakes. A freak stage accident took away any remains of his career in show business as an Elvis impersonator after he faked his own death. He speculates continually in his own mind about his failed relationships, lost fame and fortune, and how little he appreciated them while they were still there. There is also an understory here about how the elderly are discarded and patronized by our youth-worshipping culture. If you were expecting a straight laugh-a-minute parody that the theatrical trailers advertised, you will be either pleasantly surprised or disappointed, depending on if can you appreciate this twist.

Never fear, you fans of all things Bruce, the laughs still come. There is something irresistible about this crochety old duo opening a can of whup-ayass on a mummy in a ten-gallon hat. Although the pacing is uneven, waffling between the melancholy of flashbacks and the affectionate Elvis jokes, I decided that I could appreciate the genius of what the film was trying to do, namely combining a tribute to an American icon with humor, horror and sorrow. It's risky and it doesn't always pull off correctly. Not everybody will like this unusual take on camp/horror. Overall however, it was funny and touching and I loved the performances by the leads. Of such things are cult classics made.

Bubba HoTep never made it to a theater near me, more's the pity. OTOH, the main benefit to a movie almost being released straight to Dvd is that most of us who are viewing it for the first time can immediately get the inside scoop from the special features, which for fans of these actors and director Don Coscarelli will be musts for this experience. Yes, there's the usual "making of" stuff, and there's also deleted scenes. What I suspect most fans will really love is the option of turning on the narration by "the King" himself. For these things I would recommend buying the Dvd rather than renting for the die-hard fans, and that was what tipped the rating from three and a half stars over to four for me.

Summary: Bubba Go Sleep
Review: This "redemptive Elvis mummy movie" is a cute idea not very well realized. I think the problem is the script. The action is kind of plodding (well, you are dealing with two old guys with a walker and wheelchair respectively), and the dialog is lame and vulgar. In addition, the soundtrack keeps hitting you over the head with the same musical theme, that sounds like something ripped off from Local Hero, or whatever the movie of some years back that Mark Knopfler scored. Bubba had me looking at my watch after about thirty minutes -- and I wound up returning the video to the rental store without even checking out the deleted scenes. If the scenes included in the movie are this weak, I have no interest in seeing the ones not deemed even that worthy! A great waste of the talent of Ossie Davis. The director Don Toscarelli needs to be advised that writing his own screenplay was NOT the way to save money on this admittedly low-budget production.

Summary: Bruce Campbell does it again!
Review: Bruce Campbell does it again in Bubba Ho-tep. Even though it is completely different from his "Ash" character in the Evil Dead movies, his Elvis-impersonating character in this movie will surely gather a cult following. Just as we are used to, his one-liners and quirky sayings will keep you laughing long after the movie is over. The story line is pretty ridiculous, but what did you expect? I definitely recommend this movie.

Summary: HYSTERICAL Premise, Film falls short, though
Review: We ALL know and love Bruce Campbell thru the Evil Dead Trilogy! So when I heard that Campbell was starring in a B Movie about Elvis and black JFK battling a soul sucking Mummy in a retirement home I literally RAN to the video store! With a cheesy premise like that what can go wrong?!?

For some reason the film fell short. I don't know exactly where or how but the movie doesn't quite cut it. Although you can see the love and heart dedicated to this picture and Campbell was awesome, as always, it just wasn't something to write home about. I think my favorite part of the film was watching the extra features. It's so awesome to see all that went on behind the camera. The costumes, make-up and stunts.

I don't mean to dump on this film, but with such an amazing premise, one was hoping for another "Evil Dead" type trilogy with Elvis battling more absurb creatures that go bump in the night! But this is a good start!!
