Summary: This Movie Has EVERYTHING!
Review: "Rutheless People" is a great comedy. But unlike other comedies, this one has a creative plot that puts "serious" movies to shame.

Disgustingly-rich (and just generally disgusting) Sam Stone is plotting to kill his wife when kidnappers take her away and threaten to do the job for him! Stone thinks he can just ignore them and have the problem take care of itself, but the kidnappers won't kill Stone's wife and won't leave him alone. To make matters more complex, another set of meddlers caught on to Stone's original murder plot and are trying to blackmail him.

In addition to kidnapping and blackmail, this movie features an incredibly stupid man, a brief appearance by a psychopath, cops that don't care, cops that are stupid, cops that are smart, and twisted plots by all parties involved. The movie carries a full load and there are no slow moments.

Summary: It's FUNNY Stuff!!!!
Review: "Ruthless People" was a great comedy, and out of all the comedies i've seen this year, this is the 2nd best one.Bette Midler played an outstanding role as Barbera Stone and to all those comedy lovers out there, "Ruthless People" is the one to see!!!

Summary: After the wait for this to be issued on DVD...
Review: ...where are all the bonus features? At bare minimum, where's the remastering? My two stars obviously do not reflect on how witty, how clever, or how entertaining this film is. Midler especially is at her pinnacle as a privileged and overbearing socialite wife, and Reinhold and Slater are perfectly dimwitted--but not as perfect as Pullman. The sole criticism I might have for the film's content is DeVito's typical performance, but it fits so snuggly into the plot his predictability is excused. My low rating is merely for the extremely poor quailty of the picture this DVD has to offer. It is no better--no clearer, no more pristine--than the VHS cassette I've had for 10+ years and has been viewed and rewound countless times. I thought for sure that such a terrific film would lend itself so exactly to star commentary, remastering, and perhaps a few minutes of deleted scenes. This is the equivalent of an old and scratchy LP being directly burned to CD and issued as is.

Summary: The era of Bette
Review: 1986 to 1989 were big years for Bette Davis on the movie scene. In 1986 she filmed Ruthless People with Danny DeVito and the lesser known Helen Slater (Supergirl fame). Ruthless People, while a bit dated, has some hilarious moments and needs inclusion in any Midler collection.

Who could forget the kidnapped Midler lifting paint cans to keep fit and lose weight. Well, it's one way to keep yourself busy while being kidnapped.

Bette went on to star in the funny, but not as good as, "Outrageous Fortune" with Shelly Long.

DVD SUMMARY: Ruthless People is a bare-bones DVD. However, worth owning for the Bette factor alone!

Summary: It's no doubt one of the best.
Review: Being world-level stars, Danny Devito and Bette Midler successfully proved their professional skills again. The performances of Judge Reinhold, Helen Slater and Anita Morris are remarkable too. I was especially surprised by Bette's amazing achievement in bodyshape training - she did make it! That's real! - not only in the movie. Although this film is perfectly funny in my opinion, what a pity that I cannot recommand it to friends' kids, because of some sexual scenes which are really really hot - they do know human nature well.

Summary: Fumbling kidnappers join forces with victim
Review: Bette Midler in yet another one of her pain-in-the-neck roles. The wife of a wealthy man (played by Danny DeVito) is kidnapped for ransome by a desperate young couple (definite novices to the kidnapping racket), only to learn that DeVito has no intention of paying up, as he had long been tired of his nagging wife. DeVito plays up the heart-broken husband to police, while Midler and her captors are devising a plan to get even with the s.o.b.

There are many hilarious scenes, and even some moving moments of emotional sweetness, but soon past the half-way mark the engines lose steam. By the time everyone reaches the finish-line, the hot-cake has definitely cooled off. Still an enjoyable piece of light-hearted comedy, slap-stick, non-sense and all.****

Summary: 30" of Thigh Slapping, Blood Pumping, Nuclear Brain Damage!
Review: Comedy masters Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams, who brought us Flying High, also delivered this brilliantly crafted comedy, with great performances by Danny Devito, Bette Midler and Judge Reinhold. They just don't make comedies like this anymore, with there being a constant flow of funny lines layered over the top of a superb story-line, which strongly outlines and depicts how selfish and ruthless humans really can be!
A MUST buy for anyone who appreciates truly clever comedy.

Summary: Muffy meet Adolph. Adolph eat Muffy!
Review: Danny DeVito is Sam Stone. He is contemplating bumping off his rich (Plump) wife Bette Midler. Sandy Kessler played by Helen Slater (The Secret of My Success ASIN: 0783229364) wants revenge for an earlier wrong caused by Sam Stone. Mrs. Stone is kidnapped. Carol played by Anita Morris (Radioland Murders ASIN: 6305077533) wants to extricate Sam from the ransom. Bill Pullman (Sibling Rivalry ASIN: 0792837754) has to do the deed.

Do not forget to take notes, as this is an educational movie.

Summary: You remind me of my mother, I hate my mother.
Review: Danny DeVito is Sam Stone. He is contemplating bumping off his rich (Plump) wife Bette Midler. Sandy Kessler played by Helen Slater (The secret of My Success) wants revenge for an earlier wrong caused by Sam Stone. Mrs. Stone is kidnapped. Police Commissioner Benton played by William G. Schilling (Radioland Murders) gets the URGE. Carol played by Anita Morris (also in Radioland Murders) wants to extricate Sam from the ransom. Bill Pullman (Sibling Rivalry) has to do the deed. Bill Pullman plays a real dufus and the police contemplate just shooting him.

Worth repeated viewing.
