Rating: Summary: Very entertaining movie Review: "Bubble Boy" wants to tell his true love how he really feels, and has to get to Niagra Falls from California. He doesn't have any immunities, so he builds himself a portible bubble and hits the road. Along the way, he runs into one crazy character and situation after another, which is where the major laughs occur. It's very similar to Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Bubble Boy is a good movie to see if you're looking for some laughs. As a bonus, most of the music in the film is great. Catchy songs galore, ranging from sentimental to pop punk.
Rating: Summary: It's HYSTERICAL!!! A MUST!!! Seriously...You'll love B-Boy Review: ...I thought this movie was going to be on the edge of offensive. Instead it was motivational and very inspiring, not to mention, FLY OFF THE COUCH FUNNY! ...I laughed so hard that 2 or 3 times I literally flew off the couch. Non of us found this movie offensive(IN ANY WAY). To put it in perspective...THIS IS A MOVIE. I am a Christian and there is an obsessive Christian in this movie. I haven't heard any Christians crying about how offensive this movie is. That's because we realize it is a MOVIE. I also live in the south. This movie pokes fun at HICKS. Non of us are crying about that either. That's because...IT's a MOVIE!!! But as for the BUBBLE BOY character, he was inspiring and showed he was not going to let his disability get in his way. There's nothing wrong with that. But people just had to throw a fit. I know why, because it was a comedy and not a serious film... THIS MOVIE IS FANTASTIC AND I RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE WHO LOVES(and knows how) TO LAUGH...Bubble Boy is simply a MOVIE! A hysterically funny movie at that. It helped me get away for one night and I LOVE IT!
Rating: Summary: Fabio and a Bubble Kid...How could this NOT be funny? Review: Ah man! This movie has it all: a singing, happy psycho-brady bunch cult, old people, a Hindu ice cream man, the mini-me guy being tossed around, a guy in a bubble, and Fabio. I apologize to all the people who missed this one because it slipped by through the theaters and to video without anyone noticing because everyone's so PC-friendly, but the truth is, this movie was made by Disney. I don't want to get too deep about the movie because if you want substance, this certainly is not the one for you, but it's also not as shallow as it seems...there is substance in it, amazingly, thanks to the acting chops of the Bubble actor; he did a good job humanizing the wierdo. It's cleverly written, cleverly acted, and man, did I mention Fabio is in it? I bet even Disney was surprised it was funny and then I bet Disney was even more surprised it did lousy. Don't let the concept scare you, it's on the floor funny in the tradition of Rat Race (not that Rat Race was so great, mind you), Road Trip, and Zoolander. It the perfect friday night movie...I recommend, I recommend! Oh, one last thing, there's a girlie mud wrestling thing with the bubble boy...curious? yes, the irrevent humor of it all! Go rent, then buy. (moment of seriousness: it really is a very funny movie, i think even Ebert liked it...didn't he?)
Rating: Summary: Jake Gyllenhaal can do no wrong. Review: Bubble Boy (Blair Hayes, 2001)It is easily predictable in the general scheme of all things Hollywood that Blair Hayes' career will be short, nasty, brutal, and fraught with frustration. After all, you can't make a movie that transcends everything about its genre and expect to get any work in Hollywood that doesn't get thrown to you with the scraps from the tables of such conventionalists as Spielberg. Bubble Boy, when it came out, had the look of a generic, utterly stupid Hollywood comedy, and I avoided it for that reason. I've seen enough David Spade and Jim Carrey movies to last me a lifetime, thank you. But after seeing Jake Gyllenhaal's Oscar-worthy performance in Donnie Darko, and connecting him with the lead role here, I had to go back, trepidations in hand, and watch this. It's brilliant. Gyllenhaal plays Jimmy Livingston, the three sttoges-esque flip side of John Travolta's Tod Lubtich (the main character of smarmy 1976 made-for-TV movie The Boy in the Plastic Bubble). Born without normal immunities, Jimmy has been confined to a completely germ-free plastic room by his religious-nut mother (Swoosie Kurtz [Sisters], in a role I don't know how they convinced her to take) and doormat father (John Caroll Lynch of Waking the Dead and The Drew Carey Show). Jimmy has it bad for Chloe (Marley Shelton, soon to be seen in Boondock Saints: All Saints Day), but figures nothing can come of it; after all, he's in a bubble, right? She decides to marry the wrong guy, however, and Jimmy's only course of action is to hop into a portable bubble and get from Palm Springs to Niagara Falls before the wedding. Yes, it's really that dumb, and in the hands of a stock comedy director, one would expect another Dumb and Dumber or Black Sheep. But Hayes knows his films, made risky but perfect casting decisions, added in subtle sight gags and references to everything from The Graduate to A Fistful of Dollars, and above all allowed the actors to rise above the supremely silly script to turn this into a sort of Grand Guignol version of Punch and Judy. No cow is too sacred to be eaten (or run over by a Hindu-driven ice cream van), no religion too untouchable to be trampled, no comedy convention too untouchable to be subverted. Hayes makes as much fun of the movie himself as do the critics of most badly-done comedies. Consider it a pre-emptive strike, and one of sheer genius. There aren't enough good things to say, as well, about the actors in this movie. Gyllenhaal is a revelation, but then if you've seen Donnie Darko, you already know that. Swoosie Kurtz, ho has spent a goodly portion of her career playing the kinds of characters on finds in Lifetime Original Movies™, completely breaks with tradition and plays a psychotic nutball with an unhealthy religious streak, and does it to the hilt. The always underrated Danny Trejo shows up, and probably says more in this movie than he has in his last ten combined. Verne Troyer (aka Mini Me) displays at least ten times the talent he did in the Austin Powers movies. Etc., etc. I could go on all day. If you avoided this one because you thought it was just another stupid comedy from Hollywood, give it another thought. It's stupid, and it's from Hollywood, but nothing about it is just another anything. ****
Rating: Summary: Funny Movie, Bare Bones DVD Review: Bubble Boy is a great film to see if you're into absurd, zany, not-too-brainy, light hearted, silly comedies. I won't go through the plot of the movie, as there are other reviews that touch on that. I'll just say that I liked the movie a lot, and I plan on watching it again. But while the movie was great, I didn't think the dvd itself was. Aside from a great, clear transfer of the film itself, there are just a few special features, and only one I found to be interesting. There is a director's diary, a short documentary where the fx creators of the film discuss their work on the film, some storyboards, a production design gallery, a sing along of a silly song in the film, and audio commentary with the director and the actor who plays Bubble Boy. But for all the extras on this disc, some basic features that I wish were included but were left out are the Bubble Boy trailer, deleted scenes, outtakes, and cast and crew bios/filmographies. So while I loved the movie, I was let down by the exclusion of some basic extras that really should've been included as opposed to the extra features that did make it. While I can appreciate the efforts of the crew on the film, I prefered seeing the actors discussing their experiences in making the film more. To sum up,it's worth a buy if you've seen it and want to see it more than just a few times more. Otherwise, just rent it and decide for yourself if it's worth a purchase.
Rating: Summary: This looks pretty cool. Review: BUBBLE BOY is about a young man, Jimmy Livingston (Jake Gyllenhaal - last seen in OCTOBER SKY), who was born with a weak immune system and lived his whole life in a huge bubble to protect it. Then he finds out that his childhood crush, Chloe (Marley Shelton - last seen in SUGAR & SPICE), is about to get married to another man. To win her over, he leaves his house and tries to find a way to stop her wedding. I don't know if this film is supposed to be a comedy - I saw the previews and it looked like it was supposed to be a comedy. But other people say it's supposed to be a love story. Well, I think it's actually a romantic-comedy. It's different from most romantic-comedies. The plot looks really interesting and unqiue. The actors are pretty talented actors, especially Jake Gyllenhaal (he's also a real hottie). Anyways, when this film hits theaters August 24, this is definitely one that you should see - I know I'm gonna go see it.
Rating: Summary: The Definition of a Romantic Comedy Review: Bubble Boy is an outstanding movie that is not to be missed. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry. It explores the dedication of one man's love for a woman who is just out of reach, and how he fights to get her back. The trip there however, isn't too easy. There are obstacles, including his bubble suit, that are very discouraging. However, because of his undying love, Jimmy doesn't let his differences get in the way of his true feelings. A very cute movie, great chick flick!
Rating: Summary: Bubble bubble, the viewer's in trouble Review: BUBBLE BOY is another one of those movies in which the film makers try and turn someone's medical condition into a laugh fest. The only problem with BUBBLE BOY is despite some gross out humor, its not very funny. Jimmy (played by DONNIE DARKO's Jake Gyllenhaal) has a rare medical condition in which the slightest exposure to germs can kill him, so he has lived his entire life in a plastic bubble, with his overprotective mother (Swoosie Kurtz) monitoring his every move. The other neighbourhood kids think he is a freak, but this arouses the curiosities Jimmy's neighbour Chloe (Marley Shelton) and she decides to try and get to know him better. Jimmy is thrilled with this attention and pretty soon he is smitten with her. But one day Chloe drops the bombshell that she is going to get married to a hypocritical scumbag and Jimmy must somehow get to Niagra Falls in several days to stop the wedding. How does he do this? By building a mobile bubble suit and setting off on a cross county road trip on his scooter. (Here the viewer suspends his disbelief). BUBBLE BOY is a movie loaded with unfunny stereotypes. Fabio has a cameo as the leader of an idiotic cult in which all the members are named Todd. These whackos believe Jimmy is their key to heaven. Verne Troyer (better known as Mini-Me) plays Dr Phreak, the evil head honcho of a travelling freak show. There's also a memorable gag involving the gory destruction of a cow's carcass. This last comment is also ironic as hair metal band WASP also have a brief cameo.
Rating: Summary: Round is Good Review: Bubble Boy is supposed to be a movie about a boy who is born without an immune system and thus can be killed by a single germ. If you believe that, you may also be one of those people who believe it is also a remake of the Travolta film. It isn't. Sure, that is the basic pretext of it, but the real story here is about overcoming obstacles, being who you want to be, taking risks, following through to the very bitter end even if you think the end is not going to be any good . Like the ending to this movie. Bubble Boy is a good movie for what it is: a kind of slapstick comedy. It sure in hell wasn't as goofy as I thought it was going to be. It was tender and sweet. In many ways it reminded me of Pee Wee's Big Adventure (which for Paul Reubens after his child porn case comes to trial might be Pee Wee's Big Adventure in the Jail House). Jake Gyllenhaal plays Bubble Boy, the poor kid who grew up in a plastic bubble with nary a friend until the sweet Chloe (played by Marley Shelton) moves in next door and becomes his companion. Due to his physical limitations, their relationship never blossoms beyond friendship and he is unable to tell her how he truly feels about her so she goes off to marry a scumbucket. The story is a hero's journey, kind of, as Bubble Boy treks across the country via a bus driven by a cult led by Fabio, a motorcycle, a scooter, freight train, ice cream/curry truck, taxi cab, and finally biplane. It is stupid fun. Along the way he meets up with all sorts of people, all weird and wonderful in their own special way. There aren't a series of lessons, thank god, only one big obvious lesson at the end as he takes the final risk, taking off the bubble suit, risking his life, in order to kiss the woman he loves.
Rating: Summary: horrible Review: Bubble Boy was the most pathetic movie ever. How anyone enjoyed it is beyond me. In the movie, A boy named Jimmy has disease in which he can't touch any germs, so they put him in a bubble. When the girl he loves moves to get married in Ney York, he makes his bubble portable and goes to New York to stop the wedding. As if the plot of the story isn't dumb enough, bad acting and pitiful directing make this movie a total disaster. Never see this movie in your life time, for you will be overcome with boredom.
