Summary: One of Cary Grant's best
Review: Operation Petticoat is one of Cary Grant's best films. The script keeps the viewer in stitches for most of the movie. My boyfriend (who was skeptical) loved it and is buying one for his parents and his niece (who is 10 years old). Filled with good clean laughter and superb casting this film is guarenteed to be a favorite of any viewer regardless of their age!

Summary: One of the best
Review: Operation Petticoat is one of those movies that makes you laugh no matter how many times you see it. The cast is led by none other than Cary Grant as the commander of a decrepit submarine, caught behind the Japanese advance in the Pacific, trying hard to sail her back to safety and repair at a US base. Grant makes a fine picture as a tough yet sentimental commanding officer. In counterpoint is Tony Curtis as a totally amoral rascal with a talent for getting things done, usually by breaking all rules. Despite their mutual dislike, the two have to work together to get the sub home and the result is a truly bizarre voyage. Curtis' expertise in scrounging supplies for the damaged sub extends to a group of stranded army nurses, who predictably create havoc on the submarine. And as the sub approaches safety, it improbably ends up as a maternity ward to the consternation of Grant and the delight of the crew. I would hate to spoil the surprises but let me say the manner of the sub reaching safety is simply hilarious. Of course, all ends well - this is a movie after all - and the right lessons are learned by all. A great movie to laugh over with some superb dialog lines for Grant in particular and a string of great one-liners all around. Highly recommended.

Summary: Cary Grant and Tony Curtis - what a combination
Review: Starring two awesome actors and a great supporting cast, this movie is a lot of fun. For those who've seen Tony Curtis in Some Like It Hot (with Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemmon), you may already know that he greatly admired Cary Grant, as his hilarious impression of him in that film shows. In fact, originally Cary Grant was not going to star in this film, but Tony Curtis was reluctant to take second billing to anyone else. Their on-screen camaraderie is fantastic and the way that their friendship develops throughout the film, despite Curtis's characters blatant disregard for navy regulations, is enjoyable. The basic storyline is one of a submarine, with Cary Grant in charge, that is put out of action during WW2 without firing a single missile at the enemy. Grant is determined to get her seaworthy again, and after some makeshift repairs he sets off with his crew to get to a port where proper repairs can be made. However, he has gained an unexpected new crew member in the form of Tony Curtis, an 'ideas' man who has only ever been to sea once, and that was by accident. The self-appointed 'morale' and 'supply' officer uses various dodgy methods to enable the repairs to the sub to take place. And, being a true supply officer, manages to bring aboard some lovely American nurses when the sub puts into a small island temporarily. With the addition of these love interests for the main characters the fun really starts. But I'll leave you to watch it, and enjoy it for yourself.

Summary: Not Widescreen
Review: The description on the box says it is widescreen and the DVD is marked widescreen; however, the movie actually on the DVD I received is full screen, not widescreen.

Summary: Very Good Light Comedy
Review: This comedy features Cary Grant and Tony Curtis aboard a WW2 submarine that wasn't really seaworthy, but her perpetually optimistic Captain - Cary Grant - refused to accept that and, with the help of a spoiled but cunning requisitions officer- Tony Curtis - is able to patch it together and make it useful to the war effort. The plot is simple, the dialogue isn't complex, the acting isn't fantastic, but you smile throughout most of this film. I believe that was its purpose, and it succeeds.

Summary: Operation Petticoat
Review: This is a great movie for the entire family! It has stars that most of the younger generation probably don't know but when they watch it, they will enjoy it. It's about the pink sub in WW II and you'll just have to watch it. It's one for your dvd collection!

Summary: Great Movie - But not for widescreen TV's
Review: This is by far a movie classic. Lots of great humor from two of my favorite actors Cary Grant and Tony Curtis. If you have a standard TV (4:3 aspect ratio) you will enjoy the widescreen version of this very funny movie.

If, however, you have a widescreen TV (16:9 aspect ratio) this DVD may not be for you. Artisan has chosen to record the DVD in a non-anamorphic format so the best you can do (and still retain the proper vertical to horziontal proportions) is gray bars on the sides and black bars top and bottom.

Summary: Top notch, clean and funny!
Review: This is one of my favorite comedies. Cary Grant, though later in his career still hams it up well from time to time in this comedy set aboard a WWII sub in the pacific at the outbreak of WWII.

Everyone aboard gives a great performance. The Cary Grant -- Tony Curtis combo works well, though it's interesting to see Cary Grant as the straight man to Curtis' smooth talking part.

There's action, excitement, blooming romance, and lots of fun to be had here. Definitely give this video a try!
