Summary: An old favorite
Review: I cannot count how many times I have seen this movie, and I have loved it every time. Ricki Lake does a great job and while I will admit that in my pessimistic opinion it is a little unbelievable, but I say why shouldn't life be this way? When I am down or depressed and unhappy about the way I look, this is one of the first movies I reach for. A great chick flick.

Summary: Made-For-TV Heaven
Review: I first saw Babycakes on the television when I was an adolescent, and after catching part of it on TV a year or so ago, I had to see it in it's entirety. It's cheesy, badly scripted, badly acted - but you won't care, because it is still so much fun to watch. The DVD itself is pretty cheaply made - liner notes are minimal and there are no special features. Ricki Lake is cute and funny as Grace, an overweight twenty-something who works in a funeral parlor with her germ-phobic friend and the guy who played Mr.Bentley on "The Jeffersons". Craig Sheffer is her dream-guy Rob Harrison, a subway motorist who ice skates like an Olympian. Grace plans and schemes to win him over, and proceeds to do just that, despite her obstacles. (ie: he is engaged to a controlling woman called Olivia)
The dialogue is just plain hokey at some points, but that only makes for good laughs. This is an unconvential love story that has a really good message, and it is a pleasant walk down memory lane. Running time 94 minutes, aired for the first time on February 14, 1989. (Unrated)

Summary: A Sweet Feel-Good Chick Flick About An Unlikely Couple
Review: I have watched this film over and over and I still enjoy it every time. It is a warm and fuzzy film, like a cup of hot chocolate. I like the fact that the main female character was a then plump Ricki Lake who does not fit the usual mode of anorexic size 0 heroines we're so used to seeing on TV and film. What makes it even better is this BBW is able to land her handsome prince. It's a type of "ugly duckling to swan" story in which Grace, in her determination to catch her man, transforms herself from a quiet, plain, colorless creature into a vibrant, stylish, confident woman. Rob (Craig Schaffer) discovers he and Grace are on the same wavelength; he finds himself enjoying Grace's company compared to that of his uptight, intense fiancee Olivia, who is bent on controlling and conforming Rob. He realizes a traditionally beautiful woman is not always the best choice, and begins to view Grace with new eyes. We see the somewhat rivalrous relationship between Grace and her new stepmother Wanda, who always takes little pot shots at Grace about her weight. When Grace appears with Rob stylishly dressed and confident, Wanda acts surprised and jealous. With the help of Rob, she is able to counteract Wanda's little digs and prove to her that she doesn't have to conform to a certain standard of beauty and size in order to land her man.
I would LOVE IT if Ricki Lake and Craig Schaeffer could reprise their roles and do a sequel of this movie, so we can see what happens with the characters.

Summary: A delightful slice of a TV movie....
Review: I kinda wished that the Ricki Lake movie "Babycakes" was a full length feature film than on TV cause it would have been able to explore more ground on the characters. Ricki who was still livin large at the time was nicely paired with actor Craig Scheffer.

Summary: German Babycakes?
Review: I recently saw the film, and I believe it appears to be a remake of a German romantic comedy, the name which escapes me. It was identical except for a few details. I preferred the German version. I just found it to be more realistic, more mature.

Review: I saw this movie the very first time it aired on tv. I was suprised by its quality and humor. Since then, I've seen and taped it several times, but I was always disappointed by the video quality. Now that it is on dvd, I can watch it anytime I want! If you like romantic comedies, pick this one up!

Summary: Heartwarming and Wonderful film
Review: I saw this movie when it first came on tv, I taped it and everyone has borrowed it. When I found I could buy it, I jumped at the chance. It is a great film about the enduring spirit of a young woman. Ricky Lake was a joy to watch, you find yourself cheering for Grace, feeling some of her pain caused by her family, and at the end, well, I won't give it away, but you will love it. Afgkrafty

Summary: Think you can't have that dreamboat? THINK AGAIN!
Review: If I had a dime for everytime I've watched this movie...LOL I'd be pretty doggone rich! Ricki Lake and Craig Sheffer are wonderful together as the most unlikely couple you'd imagine being together. I loved this film because it explores the realm of possibility that you don't have to be a supermodel or anorexic to find love and happiness. It also points out another very important issue about size. Grace knew she was big, but it was her confidence, attitude, and out going personality that made her sexy and ulitimately irrestible to Rob. A great "feel good" movie for any woman who has lost her confidence that she can have her dreamboat man! I highly reccommend this film!
