Summary: funky inversion on the theme of American family values
Review: Payne sends up the current American obession with the female womb brilliantly. No one, neither the right or the left in the pro/choices prolife debate escapes his ascerbic wit. But like all good satire there is real heart in both the writing, and direction. Payne introdues us to Ruth Stoops (play on feminist icon Ruth Stopes?)a white trash horror whose only motivation in life is to find her next fix and puts her at the center of the right/left divide on abortion. The dialogue in this film crackles with the authenticity, great characters abound; special mention goes to Dern for resisting the temptation to soften Ruth's hard edges. This is the antithesis of your typical chick movie, good, funky, subversive fun!

Summary: funny and serious look at a woman's right to choose
Review: Ruth Stoops is a bad mother. A drug addict, she has already given birth to four children and has been deemed unfit to parent them. When she's arrested for inhaling, she's told she's pregnant and the judge charges her with felony endangerment of a fetus. She's encouraged by a court employee to get an abortion.

From this point, Ruth bounces back and forth among the extremists in the abortion debate, first living with adamant pro-lifers, then finding shelter in a pro-choice refuge. While all the issues center around her, she is essentially a pawn in a larger war. This raises the important issue of who the victims really are in the abortion war. The humor comes from the extreme character sketchs of activists on either side of the debate as well as Ruth's unpredictable personality.

I didn't give it five stars because some of the situations were a bit over-the-top and more importantly, the critical issue of whether a woman can be held liable for damage to something still inside her body was raised but never developed.

Definitely a fun watch that will both make you laugh and think.

Summary: Very funny.
Review: Sometimes you come across a screenplay that you wish you had written. "Citizen Ruth" is one of those screenplays. This is a laugh-out-loud film that skewers movements that in real life have become ridiculous caricatures. Watch it and cackle hysterically!

Summary: "Get Rid Of It."
Review: This film pretends to examine the issue of abortion from both sides, but OF COURSE it is primarily pro-"choice," (to use the standard accepted euphemism)...it claims that the middle ground between pro-life zealots and feminist abortion zealots is a woman's simple right to control her own body, and make her own decisions--which, of course, begs the question: are we ONLY dealing with the woman's life, or are we also obviously dealing with the life that grows inside her...a life that she willingly chanced conceiving by having consentual sex?

Let's examine some of the creepier questions this film (and some of these reviewers) involuntarily brought up:

1) Why is it MORE ethical to abort (actively CHOOSE to kill) the unborn, rather than to huff paint fumes and simply endanger its health? Why is the judge's suggestion to abort the baby seen as a preferable solution? Because it will save the taxpayers from having to spend money on the baby's health care?!?!? Are we as a society really that materialistic and selfish??? (Someone used the words "do everyone a favor and get rid of the baby" to describe the judge's suggestion...if you aren't creeped out by that sentence, than I don't even want to KNOW you!)

2) Instead of deciding whether to kill her unborn baby or not (why doesn't that sound EXTREME to anyone anymore?), isn't the obvious ethical solution just to STOP HUFFING PAINT?!?!? But the character's own personal responsibility for her actions is glossed over. THAT is the heartbreaking reality that this film involuntarily demonstrates. "Let me have indiscriminate sex! Let me huff paint till my eyes bulge out! But don't expect me to live with the consequences of my actions...when I can always just 'get rid of it.'"

3) This film criticizes how silly some zealots can be (lesbian pagans saying moon prayers) but it does NOT critically address the ARGUMENTS for or against abortion...it assumes that you will already choose the "correct" choice, which is "choice" (or pro-abortion). That is why the film's "moral center" is the biker character...who, incidentally, is "fervently pro-choice." If this film were REALLY objective, it's moral center would ask "which is more important, the financial security, convenience, and career trajectory of the mother, or the life of an unborn baby?" and would leave it at that.

The first step towards true liberation for women is to abandon emotion-laden propaganda in favor of rational, logical thought on the issues. This film pretends to take that step, but it does not.

Summary: Not to miss but where's the DVD version
Review: This is by far one of my favorite videos. When watching this movie one should expect side splitting laughter.

It is sad it is not offered on DVD...yet.

Don't let this title go out of print without seeing it.

Summary: An excellent film.
Review: This movie is great - and I'll tell you why - the movie goes beyond making fun of each of the "sides" on the abortion issue, it makes fun of people themselves. There are are some dark things that the movie uncovers , but it made my think and the comedy was great as well. The movie steps a fine line between many areas of life. I am suprised to read other reviews' reviews not be 5-stars. I think many viewers miss the point on why we watch movies..

Summary: Hahahaha
Review: This movie is so terrificly amusing. I know it is not a subject matter to laugh about but you just can't help it. Laura Dern gives a most superb performance. I was feelin sorry for her through most of the movie and actually felt happy for her by the end. This is a must see.
